Gay Rights Groups Concerned By Bruno

Filed under: Film Flickers > Sacha Baron Cohen

wenn243949321__opt-1.jpg

As the release of Sacha Baron Cohen's Bruno nears, gay rights groups are becoming concerned about the effects the film will have on the gay community.

"Some people in our community may like this movie, but many are not going to be OK with it. Sacha Baron Cohen's well-meaning attempt at satire is problematic in many places and outright offensive in others," said Rashad Robinson, senior director for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

The film is intended to shock!!!

In one scene, Bruno appears on a talk show holding a baby who is wearing a T-shirt reading "Gayby" and cuts to Bruno having sex in a hot tub while the baby sits nearby.

Then, he brags to the horrified studio audience that the baby is a man magnet while the unknowing viewers shout phrases like, "You're going to burn in hell for that one!"

These instances are so obsurd!

How can they not get it?!

It is said that Cohen's favorite scene involves the comic strutting around ultra-orthodox streets of Jerusalem in short-shorts and Hasidic black hat.

LOL!!!!!

"We strongly feel that Sacha Baron Cohen and Universal Pictures have a responsibility to remind the viewing public right there in the theater that this is intended to expose homophobia," said Brad Luna of Human Rights Campain.

It's true, but we hate to think viewers would be so stupid as to not see that!!!

We can't wait for Bruno!!!

  3. 3

    www.comehere.biz.nf
IT is definitely worth visiting it!

  4. 4

Wow, you are too stupid to recognize that he is making a mockery of Gays. You condone this but chastise others for stating thier opinions. Truly, you are a moron.

    5

it doesn't matter how you try to spin it the movie isn't intended to expose homophobia, its intended to make fun and spoof gay people.

  6. 6

Re: Lady B. Good – You need to read a newspaper.

  7. 7

so many people ARE completely stupid!!!! Red Neck. Sigh, their everywhere..

  8. 8

I'm pumped to see this movie. Really, who cares? If you find it insults you, whatever, then let life bring you down. It's not different than Borat taking stabs at race. I think it's great. Gays aren't really in movies, I wanna see more!

  9. 9

i cannot wait til Bruno comes out =D

  10. 10

I hated "Borat" and will not see this movie. I don't find baiting people to say hateful bullshit funny.

  11. LSD says – reply to this

    11

People are WAY too uptight. People just don't know how to have fun anymore. IT'S A MOVIE!!!!! FICTIONAL!!!! IF PEOPLE ARE TOO STUPID TO REALIZE THIS, THEN WHAT GOOD ARE THEY DOING IN SOCIETY? We already have enough stupid people on this planet….seriously.

  12. 12

    I WANT TO SEE IT.

  13. 13

I can't either! It looks HIlarious!

  14. 14

As a gay man I will say that HRC and GLAAD need to lighten the fuck up. Its all in humor, it is not Mr. Cohens job to do anything but entertain.

Why were they not upset about any human rights violation? Because with this whiney bitchy plea from them, it just sound like entitlement. Why were they not upset about the portraayal of Khazastani people during Borat? Cant really pick em to your liking…

  15. 15

Re: buck – actually it isnt, it is spoofing people who are afraid of something they do not know. But truly what the movie is about we do not know because we havent seen it so we cant really say.

But it is mocking people who are homophobic. It is meant to laugh at people who get ass hurt because someone likes boys. Ooooh that is such a scary thing.

  16. 16

Perez obviously the viewers are too stupid to get that- the viewers are the same homophobics who were unknowingly filmed in this movie- the same ones from borat! sasha's movies prove that americans are stupid which is why they will think bruno is the example of how all gay people are. however, they would think this anyways so on with the movie!

  17. 17

    absoFUCKinlutly gonna watch this!!!

    100X bitches

  18. 18

I'm gay and I think I'll like this movie. But yes the gay jokes really do need to end.

  19. 19

    I see not harm! :P

  20. 20

"obsurd", really perez, you make too many grammatical mistakes to be taken serious.

  21. cush says – reply to this

    21

Lord forbid someone should disagree with you, then you call them stupid. I would be willing to bet I boost a higher IQ than you and have incredible street smarts and participated in sitins while you were still in grade school and I don't find him funny at all. I think he gets by with a lot but am disappointed that he exploits innocent people to make his movies. They don't get paid and yet he makes millions off their embarrassment.

  22. 22

LMAO, are they serious. In Borat he mocked the Jews, while he himself is a jew. So he takes on everyone. Besides, it's not like the character of Bruno is new.

  23. 23

I saw Bruno already and it is funny, but, also uncomfortable in many parts. Some of the things he does would be considered aggressive and possibly rape if it had been done by a straight guy. If we would find others doing the same behavior reprehensible, how can we not hold ourselves to the same standards. As gays and lesbian, we should not be lowering our standards. The film is really funny, but crosses the line to harmful a couple of times. Bruno is a minstril show. He is putting on "gay face" as white actors used to put on "black face."

  24. 24

Are these the same groups that totally fucked up the "No on Prop 8" Campaign?! Yeah, I think they are, so how about if they go back to working on getting rights for gay people and leaving it up to us adults to watch what we want. Seriously, those groups can go fuck themselves, they are worse for gay rights than no groups at all.

  25. 25

    I CAN'T WAIT!
    .
He throws it all in your face.
    .
    Love him.

  26. 26

he doesnt represent anyone except for a moronic character. no one is going to view a whole community based on his dumb character unless they too are a moron. he was also some kakastanin guy but i dont think that whole country is like that!!! HA

  27. 27

Re: Lady B. Good – How does that relate to this?

  28. 28

"obsurd"? Added to yesterday's egregious spelling of "staid," and this blog is quickly becoming unreadable. Didn't you go to Columbia?

  29. 29

Jeez… I though conservatives had the monopoly on LACK OF IRONY and NO SENSE OF HUMOR. I guess not.
    .
Isn't GLAAD so wonderfully inclusive? They really don't want to offend anyone, do they? Not even homophobic pieces of shit! Aww, why don't they have a nice happy picnic with some gay-bashing homophobes and see if they can find some common ground?
    .
Seriously, the approach they take is not the most effective. Sometimes you need to get in people's faces and say to hell with political correctness, forget being inclusive and start telling it like it is!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. 30

Sacha Baron Cohen is so freaking funny!

  31. 31

Please. Like a silly comedy like this is going to hurt the gay community…Whitecastle didn't go tits up because Harold and Kumar went there. I think the gay community should be far more worried about how Mario represents the gays. No bueno.

  32. 32

I'm sorry, But this wrong. A straight actor playing satiric portrayal of a gay male is as offensive as a white actor playing in black face.

  33. 33

way to offend the jews. perez, you suck big time. what a hippicrate!!!! rob arnie and dawn say their opinions and you get upset like a school girl bitch with a skinned knee BUT when Bruno does it, its "lol".

  34. 34

No cares who is or is not "ok" with the movie. Its his right to make the film regardless. He has no responsibility to anyone. People choose to see the film at their own risk of being offended. Do people really devote their entire lives to whining for a living like this? Good Jesus its just a movie meant for entertainment purposes. Find a more important cause.

  35. 35

poopdiddy you are too stupid to realize that he is making a mockery of what bigots like you think gays are like.

  36. 36

Re: buck – don't you understand satire???

  37. 37

glaad puts the gay rights movement back 1000 years.

  38. 38

4 Poopdiddy…. I see you are still full of shit.

  39. 39

Sash Cohen is a comedic genius

  40. Low says – reply to this

    40

I think it will hurt breaking gay sterotypes.. but it does look somewhat funny. But very, very homophobic.

  41. 41

Perez, it's ABSURD not "obsurd", you illiterate moron.

  42. 42

You need to start using spellchek and maybe you might be taken more seriously. OBSURD!? Really, a teenager would know that you cannot spell. How ABSURD are you?

  43. 43

Re: Lady B. Good – You are an ignorant tool!

  44. 44

Re: party animal – Thank you!

  45. 45

I get what it's trying to do and I think people will laugh way harder later then now. In someways it is advanced in what it is trying to do. On the short term it is reinforcing stereo types.

  46. 46

    Re: Solaera – exactly.

  47. 47

    Boo-Hoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  48. 48

UNFORTUNATELY the world have more stupid people than smartes one otherwise we ll no be still fighting for our right in the 21th century

  49. 49

ITS A JOKE!!!!!!!!!! I'm Russian and there were a shitload of offensive things in Borat that related to ALL of us Eastern Europeans, not just the Kazaks. You know what i did? I laughed! Because its a joke. Doesn't take a rocket scientist, but aparently some queen got his jock in a twist and didn't like it for a change.

  50. 50

    Re: buck

obviously you missed highschool english and have no idea what a satire is or what it's purpose is if you think that Bruno is supposed to be making fun of gay people. Sacha's bestfriend is gay you moron. The entire character in Taledega Nights was supposed to show how ignorant red necks are. As was Borat about Americans, As is Bruno about the religious right. Go back to school dummy.

  51. 51

I'M AFRAID I AGREE WITH THE MORE CONSERVATIVE OF THE GAY COMMUNITY. WE DON'T NEED TO "SHOCK" ANYMORE AND STEREOTYPE OURSELVES! HAPPY PRIDE EVERYONE.

  52. 52

this movie just to see gay people as the object of ridicule
    saludos desde cancun

  53. 53

OH SHUT UPPPPPP!!!! I fucking HATE gay rights groups that are just as bad and hypocritical as fucking PETA!! Give it a god damn rest already!

  54. 54

Re: Lady B. Good – Christians hate gays, too, you friggin moron. And btw, he's a goddamn Christian. Fuck I hate rednecks.

  55. 55

This all reminds me of why Dave Chapelle stopped doing his show. He was pissed that dumb people weren't getting the satire and letting his material further their racism. When you put this kind of humor out there, obviously there are going to be stupid people who take it the wrong way along with overly sensitive people who take it too seriously. I can't wait to see it, and eventhough there are lots of dumb people out there, I think the majority of viewers get it

  56. 56

Re: adeline – No, Sacha Baron Cohen is not a "goddam Christian". He is a Jew, baruch a shem!

  57. 57

Why doesn't the gay community get up in arms over that flaming gay in real life attention whore Bobby Trendy??? SBC is a creative genius who pokes fun where he sees it.

  58. 58

Sacha Baron Cohen is talented, sure, but I think this kind of mean-spirited provocation is unfunny and damaging. First of all, I doubt you can gauge a person's reaction to the entire gay community based on how they react to a scantily clad comedian who's out to be as offensive as possible. How can someone be proud of going into an Orthodox community and flagranty disrecpecting what those people believe in (gay, straght, bi, whatev, it's totally inappropriate to walk through a Hasidic community in short shorts & the black hat) and then turn around and chastise people for being homophobic? If you go out with the intention to provoke and disrespect, especially in communities that you already know are sensitive to whatever issue you're playing up, you're obviously going to get the worst possible reaction out of people–and sure, it sells tickets and it fits in with the "look at these ignorant, bigoted, religious morons" agenda, but it's just as hateful as any anti-gay sentiments that may arise from Cohen's actions. I have the same problem with Michael Moore–I agree with both of their viewpoints in theory, but if your point is strong enough you shouldn't have to result to ridiculous stunts and misleading people to expose it. BOO.

  59. 59

Re: Em!ly *R* – Not everyone who doesn't find this stuff funny is a moron with a stick up their ass. The problem I have is that it promotes a double standard and it DOES contribute to the cycle of racism/bigotry–if religious groups used crazy tactics to villify the LGBT community, people would be up in arms (and rightfully so). What supposedly forward-thinking people don't seem to get is that just because it's socially acceptable to make demeaning generalizations about conservatives, religious groups, etc, doesn't make it any less harmful to society. Films like this just serve to provoke people and reiterate our differences–do you think any homophobes are suddenly going to see the light because of this film, or is it just pandering to the choir? I believe humiliating your opposition should be left on the playground–if you have something productive to say, it should be able to stand on its own without having to provoke the fringe of society into predictably ignorant/hateful behavior. Exploiting extreme circumstances to prove a point & then claiming you're performing some kind of social justice is just ridiculous. I mean, how shocking is it that Hasidic Jews might react badly to a scantily clad man openly mocking them in their own community? Wow, how enlightening & shocking. I'm all for social progress, but I doubt this film is going to "expose" anything we don't already know.

  60. 60

Piggez - LEARN. HOW. TO. SPELL. Obsurd? DumbASS!

  61. 61

OH PLEASE!!!! I am 100% for gay rights but when people start whining about stupid shit it goes too far…it is ENTERTAINMENT people…chill the fuck out!!!

  62. 62

Re: little rascal – Ummmm someone actually said he was Christian??? Wow "I see STUPID people!"

  63. 63

"It is said that Cohen's favorite scene involves the comic strutting around ultra-orthodox streets of Jerusalem in short-shorts and Hasidic black hat." And of course he got stares from everyone on the streets! Oh the homophobia! No it's more lke "Oh look at the idiot!" If an Ostrich crossed 5th Avenue in NY everyone would look, right? Why? Cause you don't see that every day, not even in NY! So when a half dressed man walks the streets of Jerusalem wearing a Hasidic black hat, he damn well will get stared at. I am deeply surprised no one shot him.

  64. 64

It's "absurd", not "obsurd", you moron.

  65. 65

they should be more worried about you

yet they don't seem to be concerned with your behaviour, perez. let me guess "human rights" are "gay rights".
i like cohen, but i don't like movies like this (mocking "innocent" people) - so i won't watch it anyways.

  67. 67

BORAT was funny, in fact hilarious, but BRUNO is a very stupid and lame attempt to make money off people who liked borat

  68. 68

haha omg i cant wait for Bruno to come out so i wont go see it….
seriously i cant believe their makikng another one of those shitty fucking stupid movies.
i hate them and wish they never existed. there are so much other amazing movies that can be made with the money they waste on this.

  69. 69

okay, cohen needs to calm down with his crazy-obnoxious characters.

  70. 70

If Homosexuals don't like it when people force religion and their values on them, then why do Homosexuals turn around and do the same thing to other people. It's just damn hypocritical to try and change people when you dont want them to change you. Live your lives and stop forcing people to accept you, its like when you have a kid and if you keep forcing the kid to do something their not going to do it. Maybe if you werent so pushy people would be more accepting and interested. No one likes a whiner and a complainer, think about it.

  71. 71

Puhlease! Check out those chicken legs and brie cheese butt cheeks. Yikesy! SBC needs some shake-n-bake.. STAT!

  72. 72

Who gives a shit what the fucking gays think? It's going to be awesome!

  73. 73

i dont know…i think SBCohen is messing with his karma big time…

  74. 74

Re: Incognito! – fuck you lezza

  75. 75

    Bruno,One word: IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  76. 76

waaaah. The movie is offensive who cares its funny. I hate how all the "gay" groups or the "minorities" get all pissed offf when someone makes fun of them. Its just a joke!! and its probably partially true which makes it funny!!!!!

  77. 77

Is it way too hilarious to tell the gay community to stop being a bunch of tight asses?

  78. 78

Hasidic peeps are more comedic than others give them credit:

My friend was driving down 5th Ave. when a few Hasidic men drove by and looked upon her quite appraisingly. When they both found themselves stopped at a light, she rolled down her window and said, "I'm going to tell God what you're thinking!"

They, also having rolled down their window, laughingly said, "oh, God knows what we're thinking. . ."

  79. 79

Perez, I love you, and I love your blog, but I have to totally disagree with your support of Cohen and this disturbing film! By supoprting it, you are also suporting the continuation of pervasive stereotypes regarding gay men, that we are all flaming queens, and that we are jokes and laughing stocks! For someone who claims to be a supporter of Gay Rights and Prop 8, you are doing a disservice to Gays and Lesbians everywhere! Shame on you!

  80. 80

Re: kitty9 – a lot of people actually care about what the gays think….don't ask stupid questions

  81. 81

so? do movies with straight roles speak for all straight people??? UM, no….
