Eddie Van Halen is under the impression that he is still relevant!!!
Nike launched their new line of sneakers sporting a red, white and black pattern that Van Halen claims is his trademark design.
Eddie's company, ELVH Inc, filed a lawsuit last week citing copyright infringement, in which they are seeking monetary retribution and "the impoundment and destruction of all footwear."
A little extreme!
He had a line of sneakers that looked nothing like the recent Nikes!!
The combination of red, white and black are not even attributed to Van Halen anymore!!

um, I was born after the Van Halen craze (like waaaaaay after) and even I know Eddie Van Halen is a living legend. He's one of the best living guitar players and one of the best of all time. He's up there with Hendrix. Plus, thanks to Guitar Hero and Rock Band, many of today's youth are just discovering Van Halen. I could name a handful of Van Halen songs but not a single White Stripes song. So yeah, he's still pretty relevant and more so than the White Stripes (who the heck is even in that band???). If he does in fact have that design copyrighted, he has every right to sue. You can't just use copyrighted designs and ideas without consulting the owner first.

I think he's right. The stripe design on that sneaker looks like from the stripe design of Eddie's guitar. If he has ownership to that design and Nike didn't ask permission to use it, then he has every right to sue.

Love him or hate him, Eddie Van Halen is certainly not irrelevant. He is widely acknowledged to be a virtuoso guitar player, and Van Halen is one of the very few bands that can actually bring in a large enough crowd to justify being in a stadium. That's impressive for a band that has been around since 1972. While White Stripes has sold about 2 million albums in the U.S., Van Halen has sold in excess of 56 million. Irrelevant? Yeah, not so much.
Yeah, it does look like a rip-off. But it's a shame Eddie's gotten so cranky in his old age.

Yeah that design is mos def affiliated with EVH. White Stripes are great but will never come close to the talent of Eddie. I do like the sneakers though. Eddie should have teamed up with Vans to do a slip on version of that design.
Eddie V will lose. The designs are too dissimilar for a copy/copyright infringement to be proven. One point in particular: In the VanHalen design there are thick and thin white lines (the thin even outnumber the thicker ones) while there are NO thin white lines in the nike design. He can't claim ownership to all black, white and red crisscrossy patterns - Hell we were doing that on our pants with tape back in highschool.

Van Halen may not be as relevant as the White Stripes anymore but one thing is for sure. They still sell out arenas around the world are one of the largest grossing tours when they hit the road. Sad to say but relevancy doesn't sell tickets. Springsteen, Stones, Aerosmith, Joel/John and Van Halen will always be huge as long as they can wheel them onstage.
As for White Stripes being relevant? Not anymore really… Jack has moved on to a new band as the drummer.
