Well, congratulations, because of gamers like you, the video game industry has never looked better!
Reports are coming in that video games sales for the next five years are set to grow at 5.8% annually. In just in North America alone, video games sales are looking to reach $17.2 billion this year and growing to $21.6 billion in 2013.
Stefanie Kane, a partner at Pricewaterhouse Coopers' entertainment and media practice says "unlimited hours of fun" after a game is bought is one of the reasons that "cost-conscious consumers" will keep buying games even when the economy is bad.
Translation: You need something to do to fill the time between receiving the unemployment checks.
FYI: Success should also be attributed to teenage boys, nerds, and pot-heads.

I read in Game Informer that the average age of gamers is 34. Granted, that's just an average, but that's who pays for the games. I used to love this site but it's gone to shit (as has Perez himself). I can't wait for the day when some real writer or reporter digs up one of his skeletons and puts it on display for the whole world. And while I'm at it…Perez is the biggest hypocrite I've ever heard of. He professes his solidarity with the gay community but all he does is EXPLOIT it. Actually, I know far too many men that are 18-34 that play video games all day and have no job. I even know a guy, who's 32 who literally does live in his dad's basement and gets unemployment checks (he doesn't look for a job). However, he did manage to buy a 42" HDTV. Hmm…

I'm a studious college student with a steady job, a great social life, tons of great friends and lovely women around me, and when I find the free time, I play video games.
We aren't all socially inept, fat, poor, weed-smoking nerds- actually, most video gamers are 21 and over, not some pimply faced teenager. Yes we have an expensive hobby, but we like it that way.
Besides, you know how rules the industry now- people like you and your mom and aunts and all them. The "casual" gamers who buy Wiis and Wii Fit and all that junk. They are the reason why video games are extremely successful and recession proof now.

Yes, girls do play games too. I haven't met an avid video game player like myself that's a girl, but most of my girl friends are game (no pun intended) for a session of Rock Band or Wii Sports or LittleBigPlanet.

According to the NPD Group, May 2009 video game sales came in at $863.3 million, down 23% from May 2008. Software sales were down 17% to $448.9 million. Hardware sales dropped 30% to $302.5 million. Accessories were down 25% to $112,000.

While the costs of many other entertainment options have gone way up, a new Wii game costs as much today as Super Mario Bros. 3 did when it was first released 20 years ago. Not to mention, you have something to show for your money (versus say, going out to eat, a movie, the gas in your car, whatever)…something also that you can sell when you're done with it, thanks to the internet. Not everyone is ballin' in California.

Ya know I find it funny that you are against video/computer gamers, seriously, that's all you have better to do then sterotype people. You hate when people do it to you, yet you do the same exact thing. Not all gamers are losers who do nothing with their lives, video and computer games are a great way to de-stress from a crappy day at work. My husband worked literally 24/7, all his employees would call him at every waking hour for something. The only time he had for himself was to play WoW. I also play WoW, it's a great, fun, entertaining game to play, and I am a woman. Please do not stereotype us, we don't sterotype you.

I think you owe an apology to your game playing readers. Video/ PC games are a great investment. You can spend about $20 to go see a 2 hour movie with a friend or buy a $30-$50 game that provides 30 hours or more of entertainment. No wonder why video sales are increasing as consumers become more conscious of product value and cost. I think most of the other comments present a good compendium of the inaccuracy of your comment. Please, research a topic that you are unfamiliar with before forming perpetrating your uninformed opinions.
Sales going well does unfortunately not mean the industry is going well, lots of people are getting fired there too.
