Watch & Listen: No Gimmicks, Just Goodness

| Filed under: CanadialandListen To This

Joel Plaskett is one of our favoritest Canadian musicians, and why he's not famous worldwide, we don't know!!!

The troubadour is back with a new album and his first single is a slice of pure Americana!

Joel's Through and Through and Through will appeal to anyone who loves Bruce Springsteen, Beck or Edwin McCain.

And the video is damn good too!

YES!!!! Joel Plaskett is the god of Halifax, and will always be so. Joel is the best.

  2. 2

Joel, you made it to Perez. You've finally made it lol. Good luck from Ashtray Rock! The good ole days behind the pool.

  3. 3

Uber impressed that you have Joel PLaskett here.

I'm going to see him next week. He's by far one of my favorite sinngers, and Is from the greast East coast of Canada, as am I :)

  4. 4

I love him so much!!! I don't know why he isn't worldwide either!

  5. 5

I love Joel Plaskett so much, he is just so amazing. Its pretty rad you put him on here, maybe he will get more exposure now. =] And Three is such a good album.

  6. 6

love love love LOVE Joel Plaskett.

  7. 7

I just vomited in my mouth a little when i heard that. Bruce Springsteen and Beck would be mad that you associated them with this mediocre goblin. Edwin McCain would probably just be glad you mentioned his name.

  8. 8

    LOVE JOLE PLASKETT
Check out the song Nowhere with you
    its my FAV song

  9. 9

Joel Plaskett is the best! He's the pride of the East Coast!

I disagree on the Edwin McCain thing - he's nothing like him.

  12. 12

Not impressed. I prefer Alexi Murdoch and Josh Ritter.

  13. 13

although i love mr. plaskett dearly, the comparisons to springsteen, beck, and mccain are a little wack. truthfully truthfully is the best JP album AMIRIGHT? HALIFAX4EVA.

  14. 14

I love Joel!! his song "love this town" always makes me miss the east coast.

  15. 15

I'm psyched that Joel Plaskett has appeared on Perez. A great example of someone talented from my hometown of Halifax.

  16. 16

Jesus, stop comparing mediocre pop artists to the greats. I remember a few months ago you posted a crappy pop band and compared them to the Beatles. Well, this guy is a little better but not Springstein.

  17. 17

Plaskett on Perez. Wow, Joel has come a long way. If you like this check out his earlier work. GREAT STUFF!

  18. 18

FYI - one of the background singers (the brown-haired girl) is a fantastic up-and-coming singer/songwriter. Her name is Rose Cousins and she is also from Halifax (by-way-of Prince Edward Island). She's really quite good, has won a bunch of awards — here's her Web site: www.rosecousins.com

  19. 19

Doesn't begin to compare to a real artist like James Morrison.

  20. 20

    Very bubble-gummy.

  21. 21

He's from my hometown!! Cheers, Halifax! Whoop Whoop!!! Joel Plaskett ROCKS!

  22. 22

    YAAAY! Joel is amazing…glad he's getting recognized…sweet!

  23. 23

Standards have really deteriorated since the 60s and 70s as to what is considered "good".

  24. 24

Meh, he's decent enough, but I'm too busy listening to the Jonas Brothers right now, TBQH. Americana, though? Try Canadiana.

  25. 25

    Oh shut up Emmie!

  26. 26

I got the awesome opportunity to open for Joel in our home town Halifax. He's such a sweetie and he is really growing world wide but he admits he doesn't want to be too big he likes how things are. He wrote a song about me and a friend's sister. Says our names and everything :) His signature is also on my guitar. He's a big influence in my music and the epitome of east coast music! thanks for featuring him. We're always trying to get more Americans into him!

  27. 27

Re: Ashton – Bruce has actually related their music. I think you have no taste. :\

  28. 28

Joel generally writes and plays the majority of the instruments and their parts on his albums and records and produces them himself. He's very talented and goes out of his way to remember people. He's collaborated with tonnes of famous musicians. He's also a seriously nice guy. I'd bet a whole pay that the people here who listen to one song and think he sucks would be won over instantly within 5 minutes of a live show. But then again, wouldn't expect people stuck in popular music to be open minded anyway ;)

  29. 29

I love that you love him!! He's from my town! and he's amazing! I hope he finally starts getting the credit he deserves!

  30. 30

YAY! Perez likes Joel Plaskett!!!! I'm from Halifax, so I'm really proud his music is getting out there!

  31. 31

AMAZING ! puuure delight. have been following this guy since i was a kid, seen him live maaany times.

    east coast canadian pride !
    ’bout time he made it

  32. 32

    i love this.
thank you thank you for putting joel on your site!

  33. 33

I have been listening to him forever, got the song "go nowhere with you" stuck in my head for weeks. amazing amazing musician

  34. 34

Word up East Coast Mother Canuckers! I can't believe this is on Perez! Wooo hooo!!!!

  35. 35

    Joel is just amazing live!
Great personality, great artist…I'm definitely proud he's Canadian from the Maritime;)

    36

Yay for Plaskett, yay for Halifax!

  37. 37

Nice to see Joel on here. So many great east coast artists don't get the attention they deserve!

  38. 38

Saw him a few weeks ago at the Fleet Club and numerous times before! YAY Joel! That video is purely Nova Scotia!

  39. 39

Re: canuckistani – #25 Show me a good artist and I will, I'll be too busy listening.

  40. 40

    YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Joel Plaskett is radical live. Another great song by him is "Fashionable People."
Plaskett is quirky; I wouldn't put him into the bubble-gum category Emmie. That's a category for retards like Hilary Duff, Miley Cyrus, Hanson, and Aaron Carter.
Joel is an artist not a puppet.

  41. 41

this excites me beyond words, thanks perez for bringing joel to the USA

  42. 42

Yay! Go Dartmouth! I'm kind of glad he's our little secret here, that means we get to see him rock out more!

  43. 43

    yay!!! love joel-y boy

  44. 44

yes! so excited about this. joel is amazing. you definetly need to get into more atlantic canadian music! check out wintersleep, jill barber, ruby jean and the thoughtfull bees! you must

  45. 45

    Springsteen - god
    Beck - demigod
    This guy - talentless

  46. 46

I'm Canadian and I've never heard of him, so I can understand why he's not famous worldwide yet.

But I wish him lots of luck in his career.

  47. 47

Americana? Um, I don't think. That's all Nova Scotia, baby.
Nice try though. Keep pretending like you know what you're talking about … it's funny.

  48. 48

Hey, take a leap up in class and listen to these 2, by a REAL artist:

Sorry for the dupes, it took so long I thought it wasn't posting……

    53

holy fuck…you're actually giving props to a REAL MUSICIAN! there's hope for you yet. :)

  54. 54

Wow, check out the 80% east coast canada commenters, everyone else doesn't care. P.S. Perez has mentioned him before morons, and it did nothing for his career.
This is from the same person who promotes jonas bros., simple plan and katy perry so if perez saying he likes something it doesn't have alot of weight.

  55. 55

    Re: Funzo – LOL

  56. 56

I'm from western Canada and those who know about Joel Plaskett here, love him. Check out his song "Nowhere with you" it's fantastic and he's great in concert too.

    57

This album is going to "make" him!!! Canada is proud of him

  58. 58

rose cousins voice sounds amazing on this track with joel!!!! fantastic video and song!!! thanks for posting this perez - it really made me realize how much I missed Nova Scotia. less than a month and i will be back to the ocean playground :-)

  59. 59

Fabulous! Joel Plaskett is one of Canada's best kept secrets. Tell everyone!!

  60. 60

    Bravo Joel Plaskett!!

    I Like it!!

  61. 61

cooooool. he's producing my friend's album.

  62. 62

Yay! Joel Plasket!! My cousin is in the video! In the rowing scene, he's the one in the back! Thanks perez for putting it up, I've been trying to find it since I seen a clip on tv.

  63. 63

    i love joel :)
i just saw him play in halifax on may.28

  64. 64

I LOVE Bruce Springsteen, and this guy is NOWHERE NEAR Springsteen. Very forgettable music, and mediocre.

  65. 65

p.s. Joel Plaskett is far from mediocre.

  66. 66

#20 not bubblegumy , Folk…listen to Three and you will see, full of country, folk, rock goodness. Also as down to earth as they come and amazing entertainer go to a live show and you will not be disapointed, Joel Plaskett is a breath of fresh air to the entertainment industry.

  67. 67

Loving that you've discovered Joel! He's our hometown boy that we LOVE!

  68. 68

Well, I will tell you why Joel is not famous worldwide. His muzak is shallow. The guy consistently cannot write his way out of a soggy donair.
Absolutely no substance to anything he has done. His vocal twang has promise. Sort of a Petty, Dylan mix…but, so goes the other thousands of folk, indie worshiping struggling artists. His arrangements have opportunity too, but his delivery is a mockery..similar to the Barenaked Ladies who rose to the top and quickly fell off the grill cheese waffle iron. He does have a great ensemble of musicians. The guy just needs a great producer to tell him to smarten up ! Thus is the solution for most of the struggling indie artists out there…

  69. 69

With any luck Plaskett won't become known worldwide… remember Sloan? From putting up their own posters to being too big to come to the city that supported them waaaay before they were "big".

  70. 70

Joel Plaskett is my favourite artist! I love him!
I don't know how many times I've seen him in concert…most of the time its when he plays in Ottawa, but a few times out east too :)
His single is a pure slice of Canadiana, especially with the fishing boat and four wheeler!
Deny, Deny, Deny is my favourite off his new album :)

  71. 71

Re: stephhxxo – I'm incredibly jealous joel is amazing, but you know that…-gil

  72. 72

Joel Plaskett is legendary. Sorry to the noobs who only know "Through and Through and Through".

From Thrush Hermit to the Emergency to his solo projects–the guy's been on the scene for like 15 years or more.

    He's unique, and yeah, talented.

  73. 73

For those who are only using "Through and Through and Through" as judgment of Joel Plaskett's musical abilities, you really don't know what you're talking about now, do you?
I love Joel Plaskett, and even though he is from the Maritimes, the first time I heard of him was in a Zellers commercial with the song "Nowhere with You" (which is love by the way). If you're a Canadian and watch tv, odds are, you've heard of him you just don't know it yourself.
There's so much talent coming out of the Maritimes, you just got to wait and see.

  74. 74

Plaskett is not only extremely talented but hilariously funny, humble and approachable. I love the fact that his music isn't overproduced….unlike so many artists today.
