We love Beth Ditto, but she's completely off track on this one!
Or, then again, maybe she's not. Maybe she is just using the issue for media attention, which, if that's the case, then she's actually pretty smart.
Either way, the lead singer of The Gossip continues her tirade against Katy Perry, responding to Katy's recent opinion that she is not "impressed" with Beth Ditto. The feeling is most definitely mutual, as Beth explains to Spinner that she still feels Katy's success with I Kissed A Girl is "offensive to gay people".
Says Ditto, "I don't care if she writes a song about kissing a girl, but there are people who kiss girls in their everyday life, and it's not as easy as just kissing a girl and everyone loving you. It'd be really rad to hear her talk about something like that."
At the heart of it, Beth is trying to shed light on the hypocrisy of the industry, stating: "It's not about Katy Perry. It's about this song and its innocence on her part. To [Katy], it's just this party song. But as a gay person, it's like, 'Oh, of course this straight person singing about kissing a girl goes straight to Top 40 and people buy this record. Who can give a fuck about real gay people?' That's what's really painful about the whole thing. That's what makes me laugh about 'I'm not impressed.' It's like, 'Oh, that's what you think? Of course, because you never thought about what a real gay person feels, and the impact that a song like that has on the gay world in a time of crucial civil rights.' That's just one of the examples of what the mainstream is thinking about queer culture, when actually, we are completely fighting for our rights right now."
Maybe Beth and Katy should talk it out. We think Beth is coming from a good place, but if she really talked to Katy, she would realize how stupid this whole thing is.
Or maybe there would be an awesome cat fight!

I dunno, Perez. I think Beth has an excellent point. I was just at a college graduation party, out in the nether regions of Central Valley California, and there were a ton of young women dancing and grabbing each other during "I Kissed a Girl." Later, I asked a few at the bar what they felt about Prop. 8 and there was resounding, near-psychotic disgust for gays.
It's really disturing that rednecks and bigots have co-opted this song and it's disturbing that it accepted in the context of girls making out with each other to turn on their boyfriends. I don't think the song is so much about sexual curiosity as a sad comment on young women's insecure need to get their boyfriends' approval and attention. It's a backwards, absurd message.

Beth is completely on target and represents a viewpoint shared by quite a few people in the lesbian community. Katy Perry's song plays into the stereotype that lesbian flirtations are nothing but flirtations. The line, "it felt so wrong" even implies that same sex love is something to second guess.
Also, Katy is lifted up as some queer role model (e.g. being featured in the Advocate), when she's not actually gay. It's especially disconcerting when queer musicians, especially lesbian musicians, struggle for main stream acceptance and respect.
I'm actually surprised that Perez has been on the Katy Perry bandwagon, given his supposed commitment to LGBTQ rights and the queer struggle for full acceptance. Yes, she has cute outfits, but she's not all that.
