I was raised Catholic. Real Catholic, Catholic school, my aunt working in the school, friends and family priests and nuns. I remember one priest who always wore a cassock (long robe like thingee) and never slacks. He also swished and carried a purse. And also, all the priests at the neighboring church were gay. So I guess, gay priests are nothing new. (I am 56 years old)

You do realize that it doesn't matter if a Catholic priest is gay or straight, right? No matter what, they have to stay celibate, so their orientation doesn't and shouldn't matter. As long as he obeys his ordination, who cares?
Oh, I'd like to correct those who say he can't be gay and a priest. Not true. Gay or straight, both OK by Roman Catholic Church rules. They must, however, be CELIBATE. In other words…gay but don't act on it.

They don't care if you're gay and abstain from sex, ergo you can be an openly gay Catholic (celibate) priest. Who you are attracted to has nothing to do with how God feels about you. God loves you just as you are. Now, if he is an openly gay, doinking around Catholic priest he will get the boot just like the straight Catholic priest in Florida who had sex with a female parishoner.
It has to do with the idea that marriage is a sacrament to protect children. When the Bible was conceived only hetero couples could have children. IF a legalistic Pope came in who would work with the spirit of the "law" MAYBE the church would marry gays for the benefit of children…who knows.

Most of you are incorrect. How can a priest have a sexual orientation if he isn't supposed to have sex in the first place? Whether or not he's gay, he isn't supposed to have sex, therefore would be shunned by the church on grounds that he is breaking his vows of celibacy. That is, of course, only if he's having sex….which…makes me wonder how he even knows what his sexual orientation is. He shouldn't be a priest on the basis of breaking his vows. He is looking for publicity and hopefully the church will outcast him for it. Just because he has no integrity or respect for his institution doesn't mean he has the drag down the entire establishment. Just like the church shouldn't bring down the gay community. Stick with your own shit and leave the other alone.

I'm Catholic and have no problem with this. I'm glad he feels comfortable being himself; he seems happy now. We had a Priest at our church that was in the closet and a bitter person b/c of it. Although he was loved in our parrish. We found out once he was transferred, but he still hid it his entire life; he's now deceased from cancer, but apparently never at peace b/c he had to hide one of the main things that made him happy. I don't get it. I don't have to hide me being hetero; why do gays need to hide what they are? It's 2009 people!

In the Catholic Church (That is, the Roman Catholic Church, of which it is questionable that this person is actually a priest), a priest must remain celibate for his entire life. He may not marry and certainly may not father children. Perhaps you are thinking of Episcopalians, who have many of the same beliefs as Catholics but different rules.
i am catholic and its horrible how you preach for tolerance for gays but then bash and discriminate against catholics…obviously he is breaking his vows he made to the catholic church and though i am for gay rights he is sinning and is probably not going to be a priest in the catholic church much longer

I had no concept of hetero or homosexuality at that time, but I just knew I liked boys. I didn't have sex until I was 18, but I still knew I liked guys. My best friend is gay, and he said he remembers being 5 or 6 and liking boys even then. He has never been attracted to girls. Ever. By your reasoning, I would have to have sex with a girl to know that I wasn't a lesbian. And as much as I respect lesbians, that ain't happening, because I am not attracted to women.

If someone is truly attracted to members of their own sex the only decent option for them is to become celibate because gay sex is always adultery and an abomination and sinful. This freak became a priest and I hope to God that he is honoring his vow of chastity and that he is not having disgusting sexual relations with other men or molesting young boys. It's no surprise that most Catholic priests are gays and most nuns are lesbians. But this priest dressing up in drag is disgusting and it is a horrible way for a priest to lead his following.
