Ok…. BULLYING IS HORRIBLE, no matter what the person is being bullied about… whether its because your gay, lesbian, nerd, etc. etc. These abusive children need to be stopped… bullying is horrible.
so how many straight youth in illinois are harassed?
Can we please, as a species, try and move past the whole harrassing people for being different thing? PLEASE!!!!!
This does not surprise me in the least. This will continue later in life because bullies don't go away, they just get older.

This, like the Priest article before is EXACTLY the reason for the backlash. It's a "report", NOT a study and the sample size was 200. Yes, 200 people to speak for millions of school children? Also, considering the report referenced was not only with old information, it also says that just simply hearing the term "gay" was considered offensive by this study. As in a kid saying "well, that's gay" was considered harassment. This same referenced study also shows that, by the tiny sample size, the same amount of "gay harassment" was on par with sexist remarks, and very close with racist remarks. It also did not have a comparative study on the same sample size for remarks against straight people by gays, nor any comparable information for other types of harassment. My argument is aimed to educate people on how to educate others - exactly what I've said is the argument for against using these types of studies. Selective hearing applies here.

Here in OREGON, it's not much better. I'm 50, but the kids here in RURAL Chiloquin, Oregon, and nearby Klamath Falls, are just SO BACKWARD ! I MEAN, no futures here either — no jobs, no nothing. And so the prejudice continues. No minorities here either, except Indians.

I was harrassed in school as well and I am straight. Kids will take whatever is different about you and use it to hurt you. That includes a lot of things such as glasses, buck teeth, bad skin, nerdy, gay, etc. That's what nasty little bastard bullies do. Nobody is immune to them because they are filled with self hate and need to take it out on others.
WHO CARES! ALL kids are going to get harassed.
I would guarantee 89% or higher of STRAIGHT fat kids get harassed.

It's so true. I'm from Illinois and wanted to participate in the Day of Silence when I was in high school. The school finally let us (after a long debate and a lot of rules to follow) and the harassment was awful. For my gay friends and those who were not gay but people thought they were, the bulllying was bad all the time. I only had to experience for that one day and couldn't believe it.
I say we burn the fuckin state down then.
Unfortunately although you are highlighting this news piece regarding Illinois, I'm sure they are not the only intolerant state - I read a few of the comments attached to the article and it breaks your heart - These young people are in pain - What should anyone care who someone loves? Tolerance begins at home - I don't understand the need to hate someone who has a different love life than you…

i love in illinois and am in high school and i know a couple people who are gay and i dont know anyone who has made fun of them at least not since like sixth grade

It's not right to harass a person because they are homosexual. They need to be talked to in a calm and loving way about how being a homosexual is disgusting and perverted and sick. They need to be informed that homosexual are at a higher risk for mental illness, disease, suicide and STD's than regular people are. They also need to be informed that the bible calls homosexuality an abomination. This is sad and unnecessary. As long as the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT continues to treat the LGBT community as lesser citizens, it gives a wink and a nod to continued harassment and discrimination. We are still trying to overcome the lingering stench and generational effects of slavery!! What I have said, is that common sense should prevail and sensationalizing a study that does NOT have a control, and a sample size less than a SINGLE SCHOOL would be crass. Apparently Chicago has high schools just for gays and lesbians. I think that would be easier and safer. But in a world where they are fighting for their equality, should they really contribute to the separation?

I totally agree with a lot of the points you made as far as what people say. My problem comes in, maybe I read too much, but I went through the report. A lot of people just read whatever is put up there and go "OMG HOW HORRIBLE!". I'm not saying gay children deserve what happens, but there's nothing comparable on anything else to really show it's more than "normal" (if there is such a thing) for any other walk of life. It also doesn't clearly define whether they were picked on in general or specifically targeted. I just wish people at Perez' blog weren't so… careless, I guess is the word, with throwing this stuff out there and not even having a clue what's behind it, or what it means.
