A Remake With Potential

Filed under: Film Flickers > Elijah Wood

das_experiment.jpg

It's been done before, but we'll let it slide!!!

The Experiment, a remake of the German psychological thriller Das Experiment, will star Adrien Brody, Forest Whitaker, Elijah Wood and Cam Gigandet.

It's good to remake FOREIGN films most folks haven't seen yet!

The film centers on a group of men who take on roles of guards and prisoners as part of a research study and examine how the effects of assigned roles, power and control affect the participants.

Brody will play the leader of the prisoners, while Whitaker is a guard who is corrupted by the sudden power.

Prison Break creator Paul Scheuring, who penned the screenplay, is directing.

Filming starts next month in Iowa.

Great study, movie should be awesome!

  2. 2

    Stanford prison experiment

  3. 3

This is actually a psychological experiment called The Stanford Prison Experiment. Google it.

  4. 4

    It's based on Zimbardo's famous Standford Prison Experiment . . . .can't wait!

  5. 5

Yeah this experiment was done by Zimbardo I believe…It was supposed to last 2 weeks, but was shut down after only 6 days due to the stuff that began taking place between the guards and prisoners.

  6. 6

I've heard about this experiment-they people above are right. Still, looks promising, and I'm excited cause I'll be around for filming!!!

  7. 7

    What can I say?
The movie sounds great, Forest Whitaker will play in it (Yeah I love Forest Whitaker) and Paul Scheuring (I'm a Prison Break fan) gonna directing it!!

  8. 8

    yayyy cam!
i read about this experiment a few months ago..it should make a great movie.

    "remake FOREIGN films"
why even remake? you americans are so vein.

  10. 10

Apparently the original piece was based upon a true story…
I cant wait to see it, but I dont want to get my hopes too high… since foreign remakes tend to be… umm… "shitty".

  11. 11

Yep…no more original ideas left in Hollywood. Das Experiment is a good movie, why can't they just leave it alone? And Adrien Brody in the role that Bruno Bleibtreu played, doesn't make me happy. Brody is a good actor, but Bleibtreu was beyond amazing in this part

  12. 12

    In Iowa? Nice!

  13. 13

This makes me sad…I've seen this movie and it's amazing, and it has full male nudity…so unless they do that, probably won't be worth seeing

  14. 14

nooooooooooo! just watch the fucking German one! It was fucking intense and brilliant.

  15. 15

Oooh I learned about this in grade 12. It's really interesting and should be a good movie :)

  16. 16

Das Experiment was a good movie, but you have to keep in mind that it´s not just a psychlogical thriller. It´s basically a recap of the Stanford Prison Experiment and was just altered a little.

    Re: Ravencrave – moritz bleibtreu
Re: briebree – are we a little shallow?

  18. 18

The real experiment took place in palo alto, california. It was shut down after only six days due to the brutal behaviour from the guards and torturing of the prisoners. Most of the prisoners showed signs of psychlogical disorders after only a few days.

  19. 19

omg! i learned about this study in school this year! crazy! i didn't know there was a movie or remake in progress! cool!..but creepy, too haha

  20. 20

There are two movies coming out about the Stanford Prison Experiment? There is a movie already finished filming that is called The Stanford Prison Experiment set to be released this year. Why is there a remake of another movie about it also coming out?

  21. 21

Amazing that this exact movie is being released later this year and is called the Stanford Prison Experiment staring Ryan Phillippe, Giovanni Ribisi, Channing Tatum, and Ben McKynzie…

And that this is based on a real event that happened not far in the past…

  22. 22

Where in Iowa??? I live in Iowa!

  23. 23

we have every right to make this movie in America biotch! It is based on an American psychological experiment!

  24. 24

Re: epic – Hahaha, you're right, Moritz Bleibtreu, sorry, was still with thinking about the new Bruno pictures when I typed it

    25

    Re: epic
They're not vain, they have to dumb down every "foreign" film so they can understand it.

  26. 26

Re: Nizatalie – I agree, it happened in America after all. The only thing I don't agree on, is that they remake the german movie. Of course it would have similarities seen as it would be based on the same experiment, but I think they should try to give it somewhat of an original spin instead of just remaking it

  27. 27

this has a great cast, and i know remakes yep, orignals are better (sometimes) and i never even heard of this stuff movie or anything, yes i will be seeing this b/c of my baby cam gigandet, but this does sound interesting and just b/c the orignal is amazing, but count out the remake, b/c i find alot of remakes to be great.

  28. 28

I'm actually excited about seeing the remake. I saw the original and loved it!

  29. 29

As pointed out by previous well informed posters, this is not an original idea. It's based on an experiment from the 1970s.

  30. 30

    ive seen this b4

  31. 31

Seen Das Experiment and yeah, it's a remake, but look at who's in it and it could be good! Forest Whitaker alone is promising!

  32. 32

Why is it good to remake foreign films? Why can't people just suck it up and watch the original, which is typically better? Foreign films aren't that hard to get one's hands on, and the "I don't like subtitles" excuse is beyond lame.

  33. 33

The original is excellent and available on DVD. Looks like a strong cast for the remake.

  34. 34

    Re: epic

I loved Moritz Bleibtreu in "Run Lola Run".

  35. 35

Its based on an experiment dumb fuck. could you not take a few moments to research before you posted it?

  36. 36

I wonder if the remake will shy away from all the male nudity in the original German film?

  37. 37

The Stanford Prison Experiment… scary stuff. Had to end it when it barely got started b/c of the enormous psychological response.

    38

THe show LIFE already did a kick ass episode of exactly that. It was one of the best episodes in an amazing series. Check it out! Damian Lewis is hot too so you'll win either way.

  39. 39

I will def see it cause of Elijah and Cam, I'm a big Twilight and Lord of the Rings fan! And I live in a state that borders Iowa, I might have to take a road trip this summer. :)

  40. 40

i mean this sounds exactly like the standford prison experiment and i would of said it was, but that is supposed to have channing tatum, Giovanni Ribisi, Ryan Phillippe, Jesse Eisenberg, and Kieran Culkin.

  41. 41

its based on one of the most influential experiments in the field of social psychology . not a fucking foreign movie you douche.

  42. 42

    OMG NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

I happened to see Das Experiment in Italy (Italian subtitles in German) and it sucked balls. Seriously. Yes, it is based upon the Stanford Prison Experiment, a study that Zimbardo conducted at Stanford University in Palo Alto. It is pretty cool, if you end up at the Psychology Department at Stanford, you can see the SAME hallway where the original 'experiment' took place. The hallway was not touched at all.

BUT, I will repeat, Das Experiment SUCKED!

  43. 43

    Re: xnoodle

Its both, moron. Das Experiment was based upon the Stanford Prison Experiment. Das Experiment is being remade American-style. The foreign film sucked so bad you didn't even hear about it here in America.

  44. 44

The German version (the 1st one) was so so good.
It starred Moritz Bleibtreu. He played Lola's Boyfriend in " Run Lola Run".
He is such a great actor and was amazing in "Das experiment".
In the American one that is to be made, Adrian Brody will be playing his part.
It's too bad that they didn't cast Moritz to play the part he originated in this american version. He does speak english , and has done American films such as "munich".
If anyone is interested in seeing the American one, I highly suggests seeing the German one before hand. You'll really enjoy it, it is quite Fucked up but get's you thinking!

  45. 45

Das Experiment was inspired by the Stanford Experiment, and there is a movie in production already called The Stanford Prison Experiment with Channing Tatum, Paul Dano, Ryan Phillippe, Giovanni Ribisi, Benjamin McKenzie, Charlie Hunnam, Kieran Culkin, Jesse Eisenberg, and Dylan Purcell rumored to be in it.

  46. 46

why do american always need remakes?? the original is great, especially the fact that they're german gives it something extra I think…

  47. 47

THAT MOVIE IS FUCKING AMAZING! SOOOE EXCITED!

  48. 48

It's good to copy foreign films because you idiotic Americans don't know how to synchronize a film? We always get your American films over here - we should remake them too!

  49. 49

Re: Patsy – Oh that's a good point. Now I get why Perez is all up for the remake.

  50. 50

OMG i LOVED the original german movie, was so traumatizing - i would hate to see the hollywood version - please see the original (it was in theatres a few years ago for those that missed it - HOLLYWOOD SUCKS ASS!

  51. 51

I saw the original footage from the Zimbardo Standford prison study, and an interview of those involved a few years later. Heavy stuff. Should be a good movie, i'm definitely in!

  52. 52

Saw Das Experiment on tv it was fantastic
    Love foreign films watch
    CITY OF GOD
    PANS LYBRITH
    THE LIVES OF OTHERS

  53. 53

You said it's great to remake the film. Why can't you just watch the original one? Is it cos it's not american?? Widen your minds!!!

  54. 54

    Wow, sounds really good!

  55. 55

Check season three of Veronica Mars…. They did the same thing

  56. 56

ok another crappy american remake of a great foreign-language film. just what we need. are americans too stupid to read subtitles? just enjoy the oringinals and stop stealing other people's ideas and doing shit versions. i wont ever forgive you for dumbing down the office beyond recognition

  57. 57

    shame on you perez !!!

its good to make remakes of foreign films most people havent seen ??!?!?!?!

    jeeezzzzz!!!! dissapointing!

  58. 58

so a film of zimbardo's study???? sounds like it has potential

  59. 59

you people who are saying "why are you americans remaking foreign films"

dudes they dont just remake foreign films they remake any film. i'll tell you what remake is going to SUCK BIG TIME, is the nightmare on elm street remake, rob englund ( the one true freddy) is being replaced that killed the movie for me.

but all this talk about remakes and stuff, me myself have seen lots of remakes, where in sometimes i find the remakes to be better, not all the time be sometimes.

this is just a remake not going to take away from the orignal, it is it's own film and this will be it's own film. this movie has a great cast and i cant wait to see it.

  60. 60

I saw this movcie a couple years ago. I cant remember if I liked it or not, lol. Not sure if thats a good thing…

  61. 61

Why the remake? Just watch the german version, it's good.

  62. 62

Re: janssendb1 – they're filming in des moines, starts july 13. if you're from iowa, they're still casting local/regional parts, they want only locals for them www.pmscasting.com

  63. 63

I know and realy like the original. moritz bleibtreu and the rest of the cast did an amazing movie which made me klaustrophobic and terrified me.
Do yourselfs a favor and watch the original before watching the remake, cuz most remakes suck big time! Its the same with films and books.
And i can imagine that the new version will be much less violent and much less nuditiy and that would not be good.
this is not a blockbuster movie - don`t try to make it to some.

  64. 64

As I live in Switzerland I have seen the german movie and it's a very good one.

Don't forget it's based on a true story and everyone of us has the potential inside of him - most people would react the same.

  65. 65

Das Experiment: loved it in original German (5 years ago)… but god damned: learn how to read subtitles! my mother tongue is dutch, how many good dutch movies are there made in a year: 1 if we're lucky… so i learned how to read! don't be lazy, go see the original… (okay: with that kind of cast - except for elijah wood - it's going to be a good movie, but the original while remain the original. i'm not a fan of remakes)

  66. 66

  67. 67

Das experiment is one of the greatest movies - strong emotions, no compromises … hope they didn't screw it up

  68. 68

Hmmm, but no yummy Moritz Bleibtrau in it? Or does he get a patronizing bit part?

The original is a really good film. Lets hope this remake doesn't make a hash of it or dull down the parts that make it so enthralling.

  69. 69

I love foreign films. Belle De Jour and Fanny and Alexander comes to mind along with others. I enjoy them better than some american films. Subtitles
are great. No need to know the language the acting does it all for you. But,
you have to really be into the movie. Now I am going to rent this one and check it out. Remember Like water for chocolate? Does not matter what language it is. I find them interesting even more. JMO!

  70. 70

I've read a lot about that particular study (The Stanford Prison Experiment), and I'm really psyched to hear that they're doing a remake of Das Experiment. And besides, it doesn't hurt that mega-hottie Cam Gigandet will be in it. I can't wait!

  71. 71

    Re: Elaina

    yep, mega hot Cam Gigandet

  72. 72

    This looks aceeee!

this movie (the german original) was very very masterfully done. it was hands down THE most disturbing film i have ever watched.

  74. 74

Das Experiment was a brilliant film! A remake should be fantastic!
