Pixar Grants Dying Girl Her Final Wish

Filed under: Inspiration > Sad Sad

up-poster.jpg

The folks at Pixar helped a dying girl fulfill her final wish when one of their employees hand delivered a DVD of the film Up to the family's residence for a private screening.

10-year-old Colby Curtin was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in December 2005, and ever since she saw a preview for Up, she'd been excited for the poignant film about a man who goes on an adventure after the loss of his wife by tying balloons to his house and flying away.

After the family had made a request that was never fulfilled for a wheelchair to take Colby to the theaters, a family friend began frantically calling Pixar as Colby's health dramatically worsened.

Finally the friend got through the automated messaging system by guessing a name. Pixar immediately sent out an employee to the girl's home in Huntington Beach armed with a DVD of the film and a gift basket of toys. The family sat around to a private screening.

Colby had difficulty keeping her eyes open through the film because of the pain she was in, so her mother narrated it to her.

Colby died 7 hours later and we hope her final moments were that much more comfortable for having her final wish granted!

Rest in peace, little angel.

      Re: Homewrecker – you're a DOUCHEBAG.

    16. 16

I just teared up reading this. People need to remember that sometimes the most simple acts of kindness can change someones life forever.

    17. 17

So so sad! Poor little girl! And how terrible for her parents; losing your child must be the most horrific thing to go through!

    18. 18

Daaaamn!!! But helluva good job Pixar!

    19. 19

      Re: Homewrecker

    22. 22

iunno if im too tired or what, but that made me burst into tears at the end of that story…. why does anything related to up make me cry

    23. 23

Re: Homewrecker – wtf on a post like this, if you don't have something positive to say don't say anything at all you fuckwit.

    24. 24

      that's so fucking sad
      R.I.P

    25. 25

this is so so sad. RIP Colby xxx

Re: DEEDLEDI Kids are strange. That's HER wish - and it's not right to trample on it. Given her situation, it may have been all she COULD wish for. Kudos to the diligent family friend and kudos to Pixar for just doing it, rather than waiting for publicists, cameras and press releases.

    27. 27

      Re: Homewrecker
That's seriously not even fucking cool to say I know this probably makes you think your cool by not caring, but I hope you get fucking cancer and then die, then maybe you'll care, stupid bitch.

    28. 28

Re: Homewrecker – absolute jerk. no respect what so ever. your disgusting.

    29. 29

Re: Homewrecker – I agree with everyone who was moved by the story and frustrated by how your fatness has made you tired, yawner.

That's really kind of Pixar. They didn't have to do that. I don't think Perez made it sound like Colby's biggest dream was to watch that movie. Kids get really excited about things like that. Pixar showed that their audience truly matters them–it's not just about making money but creativity and touching people's lives. As for Colby, glad she had something to smile about through all of the pain.

    31. 31

Re: DEEDLEDI – Nobody said it was her biggest dream - She really looked forward to seeing it for months and hadnt been able to get to the theater…nevermind. Clearly, you've never been there in the last hours of someone's life, desperate to make them smile one more time. The original article said the girl actually told her mom, i'm ready to die, but i'll wait for the movie to come. So Perez did nothing to make her look petty - she was a little girl, and she wanted to see a movie. It was nothing less than a genuinely caring soul going above and beyond to make a girl happy.

    32. 32

      Re: Homewrecker – You're gross.

    33. 33

Re: Homewrecker – You should be ashamed of yourself. I have a child turning 6 in a couple months and it breaks my heart to think that this could happen to her. To just one day see your child get sick and hear they are gonna die-it's heartbreking! But now the girl can rest in peach. RIP Angel!

    34. 34

      so so so sad.

      35

Re: imsoregistered – : You got it on the money, we as kids wanted some silly, funny, cute things, but we weren't facing death as this child did. No one can be in her place or frame of thought. For those of you here that say the nasty things that you are saying, you do not deserve to breath the same air as those around you. A child is a precious thing, and it hurts to hear that one has lost their precious life. May God Bless her, and bless those at Pixar that made her dying moments that much more comfortable.

    36. 36

awesome. not that she died, but what pixar and the family friend did. simply awesome.

    37. 37

Re: Homewrecker – Go rot in hell bitch! I hope that one day you get cancer and while there will be one thing you want before you die and NO ONE even TRIES to get it for you. Hope you have a long, painful death bitch!

    38. 38

      Re: Homewrecker
who cares about your ignorant opinion

    39. 39

      Too sad.
      Rest in Peace, sweet Colby

    40. 40

This was so incredibly sad…. I just hope getting a chance to watch this movie brought this girl some peace in her final hours. So heartbreaking that this little girl, with her entire life in front of her, was taken. My thoughts are with her parents. Losing a child is the worst thing in the world.

    41. 41

Stories like these break my heart. God Bless her and her family. At least she saw the movie, way to go Pixar! R.I.P.

    42. 42

That is so sad. I am glad that she got through by guessing the name. It was meant to be for her to have been able to guess, for the girl to see the movie so shortly before she passed.

    43. 43

      R.I.P Colby
      xxxx

    44. 44

Rest in peace, little girl… She is in heaven with angels, and there is no more cancer and no more pain…

    45. 45

That just made me shed a tear so sad :( R.I.P x

    46. 46

Wow, that is a sweet, sweet story. I hope it made her last few hours a little less painful. Poor baby.

    47. 47

R.I.P. Little Colby. I hope you found your own beautiful place above the clouds and the ground. We send you our love.

    48. 48

      wow.
      Talk about 'final' wishes.

    49. 49

you're a good man Perez. It is a sad story but it's good to know someone at Pixar cared enough to cut through the corp red tape and show this little child some love. Thanks for reporting the story.

    50. 50

Why don't my freaking comments ever show up!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? ANYWAY!!!!! Homewrecker- you suck at life

    51. 51

      her that final wish.
and to Homewrecker, you're day will come

    52. 52

      Wow… so sad

    53. 53

For a second there, I thought they'd attach a million balloons to her house as well.

    54. 54

OMG, you should've warned us to get tissues ready! SOOOO sad! Poor family!

    55. 55

stories like these make you appreciate life even more. best wishes to Colby's family. And kudos Pixar for granting her last wish.

Please don't reply to homewrecker. Let it pass as a stupid comment and let the good comments go through and don't muddy up this amazing story with hateful comments. Let the good shine for the good.

    77. 77

And for those religious comments and those of us religious - she wasn't taken too soon. It was her destiny.

dude, how hard is it to borrow a wheelchair for an afternoon? Go down to the mall or any department store like Kohls, talk to the manager and borrow it for the day. Hell go down to your local nursing home. They'd help too. The family can't do that yet they can get pixar to get a dvd of a movie that is still in theaters to a dying kid? this story sounds like bullshit to me. I hope the whole story is crap and there is no sick kid.

    91. 91

      Re: imsoregistered – very true

    92. 92

Colby was probably a happier person when she died, and I am so happy that she was. Thank you Perez for putting this heartfelt story amung all of the celebrity news, because I think that the person who called Pixar and did everything she could is the TRUE celebrity amung us. God Blessn Colby Curtin.

I read about this last night on Neatorama and just burst in to tears. So incredibly sad, but I'm glad she was able to see the movie before she passed away…..
Poor little girl :( No child should have to go through something like that. Life is just so unfair.
I'm glad that Pixar was able to fufill one of her wishes for her and glad that they're too classy to have used it as some big PR thing.
