My Sister's Keeper Disappoints Fans

If you intend to see the new weepy Cameron Diaz flick My Sister's Keeper, be forewarned: the movie's ending is radically different than the books and that has left fans with a huge distaste for the flick.
Warning: SPOILER ALERT!
Changes tend to happen with adaptations; it's part of the process. But devoted fans of the Jodi Picoult novel seem to be very angry that the film takes a deliberate 180 turn in the end, changing the feel and message of the poignant piece.
According to reports, in the novel, a key character is killed off for a specific reason, but in the film, the opposite happens, changing the entire ending. (For the sake of those who haven't read the book and just want to see the movie, we'll remain vague.)
The change gives the film a more "Hollywood-esque ending", but even the author doesn't agree with the choice to alter the ending:
"Having the ending changed would certainly not have been my choice. I wrote the ending very intentionally because I wanted to leave the reader with a certain message. And changing that ending changes that message. However, I am excited to see the movie and to judge it on its strengths."
Have U seen the movie and read the book? What do U think?

they totally ruined it! should have kept the ending the same as the novel!
Was planning on watching the movie this weekend
i was pissed about the inning..i even yelled WHAT THE HELL in the movie theatre…i loved teh book with all my heart. the movie was good though until the end
\
Yes, I read the book…and YES I am COMPLETELY PISSED!!! I feel that Jodi Picoult should of stood up for her book and by not doing so she completely ruined the feel of the movie. The whole point of the book was irony…anyways if you read the book…dont waste your time watching the movie… though I must admit Sofia Vassilieva (the girl who has cancer in the movie) Oscar nod all the way!!As much as I am disappointed with the movie she was the best part!
Totally Agree!!!! The movie should have never had a different ending. Completely destroyed the whole message that the author was trying to portray. Was very disappointed that the movie went in that direction and also that the movie was filled with flashbacks and voice overs. Abigail Breslin was an amazing actress in this movie and her along with the other actors should have just done their thing instead of filling it with voice overs!
yes I am a fan of My sister's keeper and i was SO pissed to see the ending of the movie
Actually the movie was pretty amazing until the ending. there wasn't one part that didn't move me to tears, it was pretty moving. HOWEVER the book gave such a strong message at the end and had such a shocking ending, and they didn't include the ending in the movie. They actually changed it completely. It changed the entire message of the book and although the movie was turning out to be amazing, the ending completely ruined it.
sorry im really mad. hahahah
me and my friend read the book before we saw the movie together..and were very frustrated with the ending of the movie. however, we were both equally frustrated by the ending of the book cause we weren't prepared for it..and it was like WOW!! with that said the movie is really good and anyone who hasn't read the book and just wants to see the movie, it wont really affect them.
i read the book and it is honestly one of my favorite books.. i saw the movie the first day it came out and it still gave goosebumps and made me ball my eyes out!!! the ending was pretty unexpected though, i do wish that it was the same as the book. but it was still an incredible movie!!! cameron diaz was AMAZINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG x500!
I have neither seen the movie nor read the book, but I would be willing to bet that Cameron Diaz's character kills herself to give the sick child a kindey because that little bratty Abigal girl would not cough up the goods once she found out she was only conceived for the purposes of organ harvasting. That's when the mother needs to take the bull by the horns and just give the girl a smack up the side of the head and TAKE her kidney. That's my guess.
eh.. Now I don't really want to see it anymore.
Not for lack of trying. I say good job to the folks who promoted this movie. Can't much compete with Transformers though….
I did not read the book, but I saw the movie. I thought the acting was great, the story line on the movie (And I've heard the book as well) was amazing. I spent the entire movie crying with my girlfriends and when the credits started rolling, people sat in their seats still thinking about the ending. I heard the ending in the book was different and what it was, to avoid spoiling it for anyone who hasn't read it, I think it should've followed the author's ending. Not only because when a movie is based off of a book it should really be true to the story, especially the ending because that is the lasting impression a person has about a movie/book. If you're in the mood for crying and being emotionally moved, see it. If crying and being sad aren't your thing, skip it.
I read the book and passed it on to my sister. We went together on opening night because we loved the book so much. We left more than disappointed. They took a really moving story and turned it into a cliche. It's awful. Spent the $12 on the book and read the story, rather than waste it on the movie.
I read the book and saw the movie and I guess I sort of agree. I feel like the ending of the book was way too tragic but the message was better. They should have left it but the movie was still really good anyway.
I adore this book, as I do most of Picoult's work, but I decided NOT to see the movie once I heard what they changed. Why did they bother keeping the same title? It's like….if in the Harry Potter movies they decide to keep Dumbledore alive, or something. It would just be ridiculous.
I was very disappointed having gone to see the movie yesterday. One of the things i loved about the book was the twist ending. The movie i thought was well made and still made me teary eyed but the ending ruined it.
A Movie about a White girl with Cancer, Cue the Violins.
i was sooo upset with the ending.
i didnt even cry because i was upset with hollywood making a fantastic book into another movie about death.
I loved this book, I read all 500 pages of it in 4 days and cried like a baby at the end. The ending was sad, but poignant and perfect for this story. I took my mom to see the movie and althought I cried. The movie was very different from the book and changing the ending just ruined it for me.
that is dumb…
it was an amazing book.
i'm disappointed that they changed it.
i wanted to go see it but now its not worth it.
i've read the book AND seen the movie, but i can't say im dissapointed. I think that although it has been changed drastically…it was still a heartbreakingly good movie. I cried the WHOLE way through it, i deffinatley reccomend it to ANYONE who enjoys a good chickflick/or needs a good cry.
My sister's keeper is by far my favorite book, and I was already skeptical about seeing the movie because I didn't think Cameron Diaz would be able to handle the role. It was not Cameron Diaz but the changed ending that completely ruined the movie! I don't understand why they decided to change the ending in the movie, the ending in the book is what made the whole book good in the first place!
what the fuck. i hate that. the ending in the boook was fucking fantastic. I hate cameron diaz. I blame her just because i can.
Ha! As a friend of a writer, I know how that must feel. Every time my friend tries to kill off a character, some douche bag publisher says it "won't sell."
So she goes to a new publisher. Jodi should've just said fuck off, It's my motherfucking novel. Whatever happened to artistic integrity? Did it die with the advent of the Jonas Brothers?
Im not gonna see it
i love the book the ending in the book was real emotionaly
guess they had to change it so it can in to be a farytale w/e
ughhh i totally agree…i wish i would have saw this post before i went to see the movie. I read the book a couple years ago and it was amazing, I was so excited to hear they were making a movie out of it…only to go see it and have the best part completely taken out!! such a dissapointment!! and in regards to the comment about the bratty abigail not giving up her organ…well you shouldn't make assumptions when you have neither read the book or movie because you are completely wrong!
I WAS SO PISSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I read the book and then went to go see it on opening night and I was so fucking ticked off! *SPOILER ALERT* I absolutely HATED how they completely cut Julia out of the entire movie, also, Jessee was supposed to be a drugged out arsonist but instead he was an "artist". Not to mention everyone was 2 years younger than they were in the book and rather then Anna dieing in a car accident and kate being cured, Kate dies in the movie. Ugghhh…. I didn't even cry at the end because I was too SHOCKED at the ending.
I've read the book (all of her novels, actually) and they goofed when they changed the movie. People handled Marley and Me just fine, they would have been able to handle the book ending, as well.
Re: Mandaxx – Lol, well since you didn't read the book I DO feel the need to point out that you will probably cry TWICE as hard reading the ending to the book then you did watching the movie. The ending of the book is just TRAGIC and COMPLETELY unexpected!
the ending was different yes but i didnt think it was bad. movies are always different than the book..get over it people.
It was so disappointing. I understand that certain aspects of novels don't translate in film, but the ending the way it was written would have made the movie BETTER. So I don't understand why they felt the need to change it. They could have kept it the way it was, and still had a positive message with a Hollywood ending. I'm hoping there's alternative endings on the DVD…..it could have been a great movie.
i have read the book, but not seen the movie. this book was honestly one of the best i have ever read. i am so upset they changed the ending for the movie and it almost makes me not want to see it. i am sure i will end up seeing in anyway, but i wish it would have stayed the same. the ending of this book was so amazing and unexpected it just really makes you think. i suggest if you havent read it, go out and buy it!
this was the only movie based on a book that i actually was happy. i understand that some parts must be cut out to respect the time of the movie (keeping the books ending would have added at least another 30 minutes). so im disapointed at the bad reviews it is getting. =( it was a great film.
I went to see it last night and the theater was packed! I have read the book and was a huge fan so I was excited to see the movie. After sobbing the entire movie, I was left upset and disappointed the way it ended. All I could hear when the movie was over, was how upset the whole audience was. They should not have changed the ending. It altered the entire movie and the message.
well, i am more pissed at the book! I can not believe that anna died in the book. I am glad that they changed the ending. I am so mad that she was born just to save her sister that makes me so mad! Maybe i am missing the message and until someone explains it to me, i am staying mad at the book.
I was SOOOO disappointed with the movie.. all that build-up to having the wrong person die. My friend and I literally yelled out "WHAT!" in the movie theatre. You could hear people who read the book making loud comments about it, too. I understand that it's hard to turn such a big, detailed novel into a movie. It'd be fine if they tweaked the story to have the same outcome, but that's totally not how it happened…. it ended up not being like the book. And can I tell you how annoying Abigail Breslin was? Totally not how the character was- she's supposed to be shy and frigid. Abigail made her seem too cocky and confident.
Why do authors let directors and writers ruin their books? It is so stupid. The author wrote the book a certain way for a reason!
Wow Perez. Really vague, considering only ONE main character dies in the book. I'm sure they didn't want to kill off precious little Abigail Breslin. Aside from that, that's what Jodi Picoult gets for selling her book rights.
Didn't read the book, but I will now thanks to this story…BUT I truly loved the movie and have to admit that Jason Patric is so damn beautiful! He was a distraction from my weeping…lots of people in the theatre…
I now don't want to see the movie, usually ALL movies that are from books end up being really bad and a disappointment. I really love how in the book you get to have a point of view from ALL characters and in movies, flashbacks just don't work like they do in a book. I LOVED the book, it is really one of the few that I could not put down and I found that When Anna died in the end it was shocking and like, wow. But now that i hear that Kate died in the movie, that makes me angry and not want to see it and I feel like Jodie should of stood up for her book and not sold out for money.
Re: sarah68 – WHAT A GREAT IDEA. I HOPE THEY HAVE THE ORGINAL ENDING ON THE DVD
The bulk of the book was beautifully written, poignant, dramatic. But, I hated the ending of the book. it was too sudden, too abrupt. It just seemed like the author was trying to get the shocker/emotional punch to end the novel. Then again, the Hollywood version is suckier and as an audience we know what is going to happen. So, if i had to pick, i would tell ppl to buy the book instead of the movie ticket…
Hollywood did the same thing to the remake-movie The Invisible. The original Swedish version Den Osynlige had the exact same story as the novel but the remake changed the ending so it was more Hollywood than original.
Re: Marianne Chitter Chatter – Nope, nope, and nope. That isn't what happened in the book or the movie.
I read it. I saw it. I actually thought the book's ending was more "hollywood" than the movie, I think the movie's was more realistic. Things ALWAYS change in the movie adaptation, people should just get over it.
i wasssss so bummed that is my favorite boook ever. Yesterday when I saw the movie i noticed little changes in the story which made sense but when they completly changed the ending it ruined it and like you said made it a very traditinol movie ending but what sucks is the end is the best part. The ending is what really makes the book so special.
Re: hellojessi – Nice reference! Heheh, we don't get it for like a month still..I don't wanna see it anymore! Maybe they thought it would be too sad for anyone who hadn't read the book or that people wouldn't get it..Still sucks! I love that book!
Re: Marianne Chitter Chatter –
actually the movie is almost the complete opposite of what you said, if you dont wanna see it you should google spoilers, cuz you couldnt be more wrong, so just dont go on talking like you know what it was about, it was an amazing book, with great moral questions, as all of jodi's books are!
FIRST OF ALL, THIS INTERVIEW IS FROM MONTHS AGO IN USA TODAY…CITE YOUR SOURCES PEREZ!!
Fuck that, if they don't kill the little sister in the end I'm sure as shit not wasting 10 bucks to see it. It shocked me when I read the book, but without her dying the movie completely loses all meaning.
i read the book and saw the movie. i was dissapointed in the ending of the movie because i thought that taking what kate said about anna in the end and switching it around so anna said it about kate made the words that jodie picoult wrote have a little less meaning. but, i think what the authour said was completely correct, you should judge it on it's strengths. excellent movie!
F OFF spoilers. You suck, and damage the income of hard working film folks.
I saw it on a whim, without reading the effing book…which I am sure is great, having seen the film.
It was a wonderful, very emotional production. I recommend at least a handful of tissues. Do not let the media EVER decide which films you see. They are all vultures.
Anything with Cameron will at least be funny in her way and something pretty to look at
I am a huge Jodi's fan and was SOOOOOO disappointed….the movie lost its essence!
I read the book. I think her getting hit by the car and giving her kidney was one the most essential parts, it sort of brought the plot full circle, especially since her parents made her to save her sister, its what give the realization of the lesson.
I personally thought that the movie changed the ending to keep it more realistic. I felt that they really wanted it to not pull a surprise on the audience, but rather focus on love and loss.
OMG, IM READING THIS BOOK RIGHT NOW. IM HALF WAY THRU AND ITS REALLY GOOD SO FAR. BUT ABOUT THE MOVIE NOT LIVING UP TO THE BOOK, THATS USUALLY HOW IT GOES FOR ALL BOOKS THAT ARE MADE INTO MOVIES…IVE READ MORE BOOKS THAN I CAN COUNT, AND IVE NEVER NEVER YET SEEN A MOVIE THAT IS AS GOOD OR BETTER THAN THE BOOK THAT IT COMES FROM…SO YEAH, BLAH BLAH..LOL
i was so mad they changed the ending, but other than that i enjoyed the movie.
Haven't seem nor will I see it based on Cameron's comments (unintentional as it may have been) insulting motherhood. I wasn't COMPLETELY offended, but certainly couldn't buy her as a mom after reading that. BUT I think that an author's original intent should always be honored..
I saw the previews for this and was planning on watching it but if the changes ruined the integrity of the story then I think I'll skip the film and just read the book instead.
I read the book. I saw the movie. It was a good movie and I was definately disappointed with the ending. If i had not read the book it would have been great. However, I agree that changing the ending changes the entire purpose of the point being made. None the less, i cried, a lot. and it was a touching story.
I think that whenever a film is based upon a book they have a duty to keep the story completely intact and not to make any changes to the story other than to keep it short enough for a film (and even then I hate that). I don't understand why Hollywood consistently ruins perfectly good books in that manner. If they thought the story was good enough in the first place to bother making a film based upon it then why change the story? It doesn't make sense to me. I've seen many film that were based upon books (some of which I'd read before seeing the film) and I always hate when they change anything, even something minor, and especially when the changes make no sense to have done (like changing a character's name, for example, or changing a location of a scene).
Picoult's ending was trite and banal (in other words, unless Picoult's message was that some people are and should be destined to be sacrificed for another, it was a friggen cop out)
saw the movie, thought it was great but my best friend asked what happened at the end and when i told her, she was way bummed. They changed it quite significantly, killing off a completely different character.
i was terribly disappointed.
how incredibly disappointing… i'm actually glad i know now so i won't scream in anger at the end…
terrible terrible terrible! I turned to my friend and said "i hate it" about 40 mins into it. The whole movie is just plain awful. It completely misses the entire point of the book, which is what makes the book so phenomenal. Total waste of my money.
The ending of the book is tragic, but without it, the message is lost and the movie becomes another 'touching' story. Yeah, that's nice and all, but the book was about more than that - it had a point, the point being that you can't take someones life for granted, that you never know when death will come and collect the people you least expect and so on and so forth. I saw it as a warning to parents who are in that situation, not to take the life of their 'healthy' kids for granted.
Oh well, Hollywood does it again…takes a great book and alters it for a 'softer' market.
So ironic, I was just talking about this at work today… I read the book a couple weeks ago and was planning to go see the movie but my sister warned me not to bother. She also read the book and had just watched the movie and told me how they changed the ending… I was pissed cause I was looking forward to seeing it! But knowing that the other sister dies in the movie totally throws off the purpose and message of the book. Disappointing indeed!
i couldnt agree more. i cried the entire movie but when i seen the ending the crying stoped and i was incredable disapointed and angry with the ending.
Totally agreed. A COMPLETE 180. And, I think the original ending would've been just fine for a movie too. Lame. Meh.
Re: Marianne Chitter Chatter –
wow you are completely off.
i luv movies that make me cry but this one looks too sad for me…i want 2 watch it but i donno yet
I read the book, but haven't seen the movie. Although I heard the movie ending was different than the book ending, which is too bad for the author because that's not how she wrote it.
WHY IS HOLLYWOOD ALWAYS ABOUT SEX?
THE GIRL WAS 14 AND THEY FOOLED AROUND,
THAT HONESTLY RUINED THE MOVIE FOR ME,
i didnt like the ending of the book, but i understand,
and i came to really like it,
WHY WOULD THEY CHANGE IT?!
I HATEHATEHATE HOLLYWOOD,
I had read this book a couple of years ago and was so excited when I heard they were making a film, however I was completely disappointed in the change of ending…and it's too bad because I thought the actors playing the kids and Alec Baldwin did such an amazing job.
I was shocked with the ending….it was total crap and didn't make any sense….the worst scene was when everyone was in the hospital saying a bunch of stupid shit to the girl…..I loved the book and to have a shit ending like that is a real disappointment!!!
This Movie is a pile of shit compared to the book, it is sooooo far from the story, the characters are described in detail in the book and don't fit that description in the movie.
So-so movie, just not adapted in anyway to a great book, the director did no justice to a great story
So I am a HUGE Jodi Picoult fan, I have read all of her books and My Sister's Keeper was my absolute favorite out of all of them. So, needless to say I was very excited when I heard they were turning this beautiful story into a movie and cast such amazing actors in it. I went to see it with my mom (who has not read the book) and we cried throughout the entire film, it was done beautifully, that is until the ending. I walked out of the theater when they decided to completely alter the ending of the story, in the book the younger sister dies in a car accident and the sister with the cancer gets her organs and lives. They completely ruined the effect of the story. I don't understand why Jodi didn't approve the script, after all this was HER book. She should sue for the script writers totally ruining such a wonderful story.
Read the book and saw the movie…liked both endings
I too read the book and loved it……..I cried and cried through the whole book but especially at the end. Although the ending was traumatic and heartbreaking, the message was beautiful and poignant. I went to see the movie this past weekend, already a little on the defensive because I was not impressed that Cameron Diaz, as the mother, was being made the "point" of the movie. In the book, she does have a part but she is not THE part. Needless to say, the ending was just terrible. While I cried throughout the movie, I stopped completely watching the train wreck of an ending. So disappointing…………it was not worth the wait.
Is it really a surprise that this movie was a disappointment? Come onnnnn
After seeing the advertisements for the movie on tv i decided to read the book. I was just blown away abt how well written the book was. I was not expecting the book to end the way it did and before i knew it i was crying my eyes out!!!! So i was so excited to take my mom to see it she didn't read the book but i figured waiting to see the movie would b just fine i just couldn't wait for her to see the ending that was the whole reason i wanted her to see the ending. prior to seeing the movie im like mom your nvr gnna guess the ending.
I don't understand why they thought they had to change the ending??? I mean most the time director seem to think they have to "hollywoodize" endings but there was no need to infact they made it boring i was like WTF i was soooooooooo pisssssed i demand a remake!!!! but i will say it was still a good movie cameron diaz did an AWESOME job!!!!
Going to see it over the Holiday! I hope it is good.
omg i am soooooo mad! it makes no sense why they had the ending they did. and furthermore, they took out Julia, gave Campbell alexander like no air time. ugh im so so so mad! i was so looking forward to this movie and even though i cried a bunch of times, i was so mad at the ending!!!!!!
I was ripshit. I feel that in some cases, yes- it is necessary to adapt and make changes to the movie version of a book. In this case, it was completely unnecessary. The ending from the book, in my opinion, would have transfered beautifully to film. Changing it was a ridiculous decision. I don't care what the producers of the film have for excuses, there isn't one. They butchered it. This film could have been stunning, and it simply wasn't.
ok everyone needs to stop!!!! just because the ending wasnt the same doesnt mean the movie was bad. you should stop for a sec and forget you ever read the book, it was an AMAZING movie!! and yes maybe they should of kept the ending but it was still brilliant. and i read the book.
I just saw the movie and cried from beginning to end….it was perfect.
The book sucked anyway - it was so predictable - wasn't a very good book. Not a fan of Jodi Picoult - and besides that it's a cheesy movie. It doesn't matter if you haven't read the book anyway!
i read the book and absolutely loved it the ending was amazing and it was soo sad . i saw my sisters keeper today and the whole movie was tru to the book except maybe some characters like cambells ex girlfriend and the sons the arsenist in the book but whatever other then that they kept it true when i saw the ending i was gonna get up and walk out. totally dissappointing i couldn't believe it.
They really should have kept the ending. I would like to see them try and fix it for the DVD release and have the original ending on it. I think it would change the message.
I tell you what, though. I cried my eyes out after reading the ending. It was extremely touching!
i read the book as well as watched the movie,
and although the movie did it justice i believe,
it kind of is hard to complain.
I feel like the movie is a loose adaptation because obviously a lot has been changed.
The ending however should have been the same as the book, no doubt about it.
Although a twist, I just feel like with Kate(the sister with cancer) dying, sort of made no purpose for the law suit, etc.
Anna probably would have given the kidney to Kate, she just wanted to be able to be in control over her own body.
Hopefully the DVD includes the ending from the book.
I didn't read the book and doesn't know what it is about, except for what I see in the news about the movie.
…And I even am not a fan of Cameron Diaz!
BUT I CAN'T WAIT FOR SEEING AGAIN THE BEAUTIFUL ABGAIL BRESLIN.
I JUST LOVE THAT GIRL !!!
Yeah well, even though some of you have never heard of it nor have the capacity to watch anything other than The Hills, they changed the ending of Brighton Rock because it was too 'sad' for Hollywood. Its what they do, regardless, I'm sure they would want a happy ending to Schindler's List with everyone dancing and singing, but that one had to go the way it was made to be. Depressing, upsetting but a masterpiece nonetheless.
now im pissed.
i lovvvvvved the book!! i couldnt put it down.
what happened in the end?
That's just fecking stupid! I cried my eyes out when I read this and their was a great ending which made you think. What is the problem with Hollywood? Does everything has to end with tinsel and cotton candy?
I read the book….and I thought the ending was cheesy, unbelelievable and totally ruined the whole book. I for one am VERY glad they changed it. But I hate Cameron Diaz. BAD CASTING.
No point going to see it then. The end of the book makes the novel a worthwhile story.
I read the book, and to be honest, I would have liked to see more of Jesse's character play out like in the novel. Of course the ending was disappointing. The message that was supposed to be heard was altered. However, the actress who played Kate was exceptional. She did a great job portraying her character and she did it with such emotion.
