My Sister's Keeper Disappoints Fans

If you intend to see the new weepy Cameron Diaz flick My Sister's Keeper, be forewarned: the movie's ending is radically different than the books and that has left fans with a huge distaste for the flick.
Warning: SPOILER ALERT!
Changes tend to happen with adaptations; it's part of the process. But devoted fans of the Jodi Picoult novel seem to be very angry that the film takes a deliberate 180 turn in the end, changing the feel and message of the poignant piece.
According to reports, in the novel, a key character is killed off for a specific reason, but in the film, the opposite happens, changing the entire ending. (For the sake of those who haven't read the book and just want to see the movie, we'll remain vague.)
The change gives the film a more "Hollywood-esque ending", but even the author doesn't agree with the choice to alter the ending:
"Having the ending changed would certainly not have been my choice. I wrote the ending very intentionally because I wanted to leave the reader with a certain message. And changing that ending changes that message. However, I am excited to see the movie and to judge it on its strengths."
Have U seen the movie and read the book? What do U think?

I read the book and it was a 3 tissue book. I have heard SO many changes were made that a movie I was once very excited to see now I could care less about. Not EVERY movie has to have a happy ending, this book didn't, at least for one character but it should have remained as the author intended.
It was a good movie until the end. They never should have changed the ending. I went to a Jodi Picoult book signing last year and she told everyone how disappointed she was that they changed the ending and that after she sold the rights to the book she had no creative input. If they kept the ending as same as the novel it would have been a great hit!!!!!!
I read the book and actually liked the ending of the movie better. I didn't like Picoult's ending where Anna is brain dead at all!
Cameron Diaz was awful.
Oh now, come on.. Most movies that are made from books are different get over it.
If NONE of you would have read the book and went to go see it in theaters you would of loved it. It was an amazing movie.. and even though the end was changed, the message was still good? Chilllllllllll
The ending to the book was one of the best ending's I've ever read! The movie TOTALLY ruined the book and I can't believe that Jodi would let them do that! I think everyone is TOTALLY pissed… The DVD better have an alternate ending.
This was the very first Jodi Picoult book I ever read. I had made my mind up not to see the movie because the book left me a blubbering mess. To change the ending, which becomes the ENTIRE point of the whole book, is baffling. Get the book, skip the movie.
Read the book and saw the movie. The movie was awful in comparison. They wrecked it completely! There was also a major character in the book that wasn't at all in the movie. It was lame.
I have not seen the movie but I have read the book. I can't believe they would change the ending!! It's what made the book so good. Don't think I will even bother seeing it now.
I read the book and clearly Abigails character doesn't die like she does in the book. My daughter wants to see it so I'll take her but I wish they would've kept the ending the way it was meant to be.
if you watch the movie without comparing it to the book you will love it. i cried my eyes out and i thought it was great. but i did read the book a few years ago and the ending is completely different.
They never should have changed the ending, the movie was great up until the end.
I loved the book and liked the movie, but it was completely different. Almost like a different story.
ive read the book and WAS looking forward to the film i havent read the main bit of this post coz if hte film emds differently i dont want it ruined for me!
i read the book and saw the movie. i was SOOO dissapointed. i loved the twist ending in the book but the movie was totally ruined! they should have kept it the same it totally ruins the story. jodi picoult should sue! lol
How exactly is it a spoiler if you're remaining vague? Right now, it's just a spoiler to people who read the book…
I read the book and I HATED the ending. I would never ever read it again. I mean the whole book is great and you grow to love these two sisters and you really feel for the sister that was really only brought into the world to save her sister then SHE ends up dying?? WTF is that. I havent seen the movie nor do I want to.
I read the book, and I HATED the ending… excellent book w/ a bad ending, so I look foward to seeing the movie now that I know the ending is changed!
I agree with what most others have said — the movie was a major disappointment. Unlike the book which focused mainly on Anna and her story and WHY she was struggling with what her family had planned for her to do, the movie focused too much on Kate and her story and how her disease pretty much destroyed her family.
**SPOILER ALERT**
The ending was the worst. Jodi Picoult's ending was the ultimate irony for Kate and Anna's mother who spent Anna's entire life (and even the planning of her life) trying to save her older daughter… and in that ended up losing the other, forever. In a way she'd never imagined.
The new ending does no justice to any of that.
*END SPOILER ALERT
I've read the books and saw the movie and I love both. I like the book a lot more because of the ending. But it's hollywood and it's not My Sisters Keeper the movie-book. It's my Sisters Keeper the movie. This happens to all of the books that become movies. For anyone who saw the movie but didn't read the book they deff. should!
The movie has seriously depressed me.
i dont read fiction anymore. the movie looks stupid as hell. i would have expected a more bookish ending, so i'm not sure why they would hollywoodize it.
I WAS SOOO UPSET, it was terrible, I couldn't cry because it was so predictable. Sad, but not my sisters keeper. I guess books are still always better
the ending of the novel was essential to the book….it was EVERYTHING. Nick Cassavetes and Jeremy Leven made a HUGE mistake when they adapted the screenplay. the movie could have been amazing because the book was amazing. such a dissapointment.
that sucks
Re: Marianne Chitter Chatter –
actually…before you go typing an ignorant response to something you don't know anything about, the mother does not have the same blood type. aka the kidney has an incredibly high chance of failing.
congratulations, you just made yourself look like a huge idiot.
Re: heathaaa528x –
you must not have read the book. the ending of the movie made the book all about Kate's fight for cancer…and that's not the purpose of the book. the purpose of the book is to what lengths do you go to to save your child. where do you draw the line? how many risks do you take to keep your son or daughter alive, and in the end, are the risks and is the fight worth it.
no one was supposed to be happy in the end of the book. the book ended and the father was an alcoholic and the mother was severly depressed. it was real life. not a fairy tale.
Re: Lindsay.M –
you obviously didn't read the book because the message is what the book was about, it had very little to do with a person's struggle for cancer. it had to do with the lengths at which one will go to help their child, brother, sister, or parent. what sacrifices we are willing to make for people we love.
It's the same with Angels & Demons…. they Drastically changed the ending in the movie from the book!
I liked the movie ending better & more realistic than the book LOVED IT
it was still an amazing movie.,
the book ending wouldn't have worked as a movie, they made the right decision
i love my sister's keeper (the novel). the ending in the novel was so shocking, and although i plan on seeing the movie, i know that anything other than the true ending will be really disappointing.
I have read the book. Though it was incredibly sad, The message was on point… I was anxious to see the movie. now, as I love to see books come to life, (although I am usually disappointed and prefer the books) I finished this one yesterday and cried my eyes out at the ending and the message it sends, which left me wanting to see the movie even more, now after reading this, I am not real sure how I will precieve the movie, the ending is what stamps the message into your heart. Stays with you in your thoughts, I am thinking forever… I am nervous now that the movie will change this…
saw the movie yesterday! i was soo pissed the ending was amazing n the book and i was so excited for the movie and it was amazing but the ending was a huge bummer!
the novel was amazing… and if the ending is changed then it totally takes away from the desired effect that Jodi Piccoult wanted!
When I went to see this, almost everyone in the theater was upset about the ending. Audible gasps everywhere.
They should have kept the author's ending, I think that it would have worked better, it had a very bittersweet ending that would have been nice to translate to screen.
I have just finished the book; the best book i have ever read i will mention; and watched the movie because i was very stoked to see it put into the cinema, when i left the theatre i was in utter disappointment and shock that jodi picoult would allow the changing of the ending i do not by any means believe that this movie satisfies the intensity and the meaning and message brought on by the book it totally changes the whole story and the best thing or one of them about the book to me was the fact that it took that unsuspecting twist at the end which drew me to more of jodi picoult's work and this movie hoping but leaving disappointed.
Shockin'!
x
Re: Marianne Chitter Chatter – thats so funny because you're completely wrong.. since u haven't read the book or seen it i don't want to say why because that would completely ruin it .. but let's just say.. anna is not in any way who you think she is going to be … at all. (not a brat)
I thought that the movie wass amazingg and that every1 shud just mind their business because the director wanted to do somthin different so just be happy becausee things dont always have to be the same so deal WITH ITT!!!!!!! kk and i think that cameron diaz should get a oscar award for this moviee because she really waz fantastic!! I
