Police Raid Texas Gay Bar, Arrest Patrons, Seriously And Unnecessarily Injure One!
In Fort Worth, Texas, police conducted a raid this past weekend on a newly opened gay bar, utilizing excessive force to essentially harass and arrest patrons, all on the 40th anniversary of Stonewall, demonstrating that though we've come a long way, there is still much to be done.
The Rainbow Lounge had been open only a week when police entered the establishment to perform a routine ordinance check, but they utilized unnecessary aggression toward patrons, arresting seven people for public intoxication (In a bar?) and sending one man to the hospital with bleeding from the brain.
Not surprisingly, the cops have defended their actions, claiming to have been sexually harassed by patrons. Oh really?
The LGBTQ community isn't buying it and witnesses contend that the police encountered no such hostility.
On Sunday night protestors demonstrated in downtown Fort Worth and Fort Worth councilman Joel Burns has called for accountability.

Um Perez you show your inability to report on anything without bias here. You have established no facts to show this was in any way aimed at harassing gays. In fact you admit that it was a ROUTING ordinance check. However during that ROUTINE check apparently there were some altercations. You dont provide any details as to how these people who were arrested were acting, and I bet you dont have any. Apparently you think just because someone is gay that they dont deserve to be arrested no matter what their actions are as you dont seem to be interested in what the actions were that got them arrested. I doubt it went down as stated herein by the resident Spin Doctor Perez Hilton, but it probably didn't go down the way the cops say either. I hope there is video. And why are cops going into a bar to do "license" and/or "code" inspections? Aren't there any city officials to do that as their job? OMG I meet the owner's to this bar a few weeks ago in Houston At Mary's they were so Happy to reopen this once shutdown club.
I can remember discussing with them about permits they said they were all up to date on permits.

I'm a white female with a cop for a brother, and I have still had police be pretty disrespectful to me, and beat the crap out of my husband, for just running his mouth. The SAME group of officers conducted alcohol raids at two other bars and arrested people at straight bars too (some for being too rowdy). I've been in gay bars (fun places normally) and I know what's happened to a few straight men in the presence of EXTREMELY drunk gay men. The same that STRAIGHT drunk men harass WOMEN officers. One gay man was taken to the hospital instead of the drunk tank because he was so drunk he was convulsing. The "protesters" protested for 20 minutes and there was about 100 of them. Check the local news on the stories - not that stupid over dramatizing blog Perez links to.

It is common for all bars in Texas. This is not a gay issue, but you will figure that out in a week or two.
It's pretty normal for cops to go into bars around Ft. Worth and north Texas in general and arrest people for public intoxication. So, don't be shocked by that in itself. But, there definitely seems to be more to this story if someone being arrested for P.I. got sent to the hospital with a brain injury. If that happened at a hip hop or Tejano club, you can bet enough people would be jumping up and down in protest that the cops would have already been fired.
I live in Ft. Worth, and what was failed to mention is that many other bars were also "raided". These weren't "raids", they were inspections done by the TABC-Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission-which are done frequently by the TABC at places that serve alcohol. They come in and observe how alcohol is being served, and how patrons are behaving. The TABC is known to be strict, and can be a nuisance to deal with. But in the long run, they do help clean up the *intoxicated people* off our streets, which is an issue in the state of Texas. This particular bar was the only gay bar that night. And the only one making headlines. I know many gay people, and witnesses that aren't being heard said there were a few inebriated folks there *intimidating* the police. The TABC does not deal with publicly drunk people with a manner of concern-they just arrest on spot. I, personally, do not believe this was ANY act agaisnt gays. AND my gay friends believe it wasn't as well. The ones that DID get into trouble seem to be riding the discrimination wagon, instead of accepting responsibility. I don't hear the other individuals from the other bars that were taken in complaining….

I was there and it was definitely targeted to there. I go out to the regular fort worth bars on a very regular basis. Yes, here they more strict than say dallas, but they also never come inside a bar. They sit outside and if you're acting messy they put you in we call the drunk tank or the paddy wagon. Yeah, its kinda f%$ked up to do that because you're leaving a bar, but it happens. I was there and they went INSIDE the bar to arrest people for PUBLIC intoxication. They were aggressive and they asked questions very aggressively, and when they came in, for some reason half of them went straight for the bathroom. they knew exactly where they were going and what they were doing.

I think you should know more details before you call it a gay hate crime. Believe it or not, gays also occaionally break the law. There is always going to be descrimination EVERYWHERE. Not just in the north or south. You just choose to report instances in the south because its easier to gain sympathy b/c the south is more synonymous with gay bashing.Truth is, the statistics aren't any different in the north. They sit out in the street with their van and wait for the drunks to act like idiots and then arrest them. They have never arrested anyone inside the bar unless that person was getting in a fight. The only time I have ever seen them go in a bar is to arrest someone who is fighting or because the fire alarm went off. This is the only time i have ever seen them come in and start yelling at people. I have friends that are part of the FWPD and i told them how disgusted i was that they had done that.
