Obama A "Champion" For The Gay Community?

That remains to be seen, but President Barack Obama insists that he will not neglect the rights of the gay community any longer. The President invited leaders of the community to the White House today for a reception celebrating Gay Pride Month.
He spoke to the audience about the "support" the community will garner from himself and the First Lady and looks forward to changing minds as well as laws.
"I will not only be your friend, I will continue to be an ally and a champion and a president who fights with you and for you," he said.
You can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk?????
The President addressed the fact that many gay rights leaders have viewed his administration as being somewhat lax in the fight for equal rights. However, Obama assured his guests that the fight was just beginning and that the community should look forward for things to come: "I know many in this room don't believe that progress has come fast enough. And I understand that…I expect and hope to be judged not by words, not by promises I've made, but by promises that my administration keeps."
Some of the plans he intends to implement include an "employee nondiscrimination bill" and a "hate crimes bill" for the protection of gays and lesbians, a rescindication on a ban on entry into the US based on HIV status, and a repeal on the "don't ask, don't tell" military policy that allows homosexuals to serve as long as they don't disclose or act on their sexual orientation.
As for same-sex marriage, Obama still seems to be taking a backseat on that one, noting that he "has issued a presidential memorandum expanding some federal benefits to same-sex partners", but it doesn't include health benefits or pension guarantees.
Keep going, Mr. President. We know you can do much more. Let's see it happen!

No one in the military wants the Don't Ask Don't Tell repealed. They're all perfectly happy not knowing if someone they take showers with and bunk with is gay. Now it might be ridiculous thinking on their part, but if it's going to cause a TON of issues w/our fighting force, then I say don't remove it. I'm 100% gay friendly and supporting of gay rights (my best friend is a lesbian and many of my other friends are gay or bi) but I also think that we need to make sure that our military runs at full efficiency, and if knowing your bunk-mate is gay is going to cause someone to not perform well in combat, then there's a problem.
I'll believe it when I see it…until he actually does something he's just another politician talking a good game but doing nothing.
There are MUCH more important things going on right now then just to worry about gay rightS!

There are far more important matters the President needs to focus on before addressing whining civil activists. Like, I don't know, the war in Iraq? The failed Iranian Democracy? North Korea already starting to enrich its Uranium to attack us? Poverty? Crime? Pollution? Hunger?
I think these things will happen, but it will take time. While gay rights are so important, he has so many big items on his plate and it can not realistically happen all at once. He is attacking the Israel/Palestine issue with gusto, working on the economy, health care, and green energy…and those are all big things. With the exception of the Israel/Palestine issue, they all impact our economy greatly, which makes sense as to why they would get first priority. He has barely been in office 6 months, and while "Presidential Orders" sound like a good idea, they only last as long as that President stays in office. Real, lasting, positive change has to happen with a well thought out plan and the help of congress. Bush got things done quickly, but he skirted the law much of the time. I would rather have a President who is lawful, even if it takes a little bit longer. He has at least 4 years to make things happen, folks!

The UK military have allowed gays since 2000, and they are currently serving with our service men and women in Afghanistan. Therefore, our military already works along side of gay service men and women. Our military can do anything the Brits can!

Re: chandler02 – But you're only telling half the story as well. Britain's military is roughly 1/5th the size of the US. They are not forced under certain rank (E-4 here) to stay in barracks consistently. Their government also has the money to pay for much nicer barracks in most of their training facilities for separate bathrooms and showers, whereas mostly newer Air Force barracks allow for here. Additionally, Britain's ground troops have only seen about 1/10th of on the ground combat and an exhaustive mental support as well.

I also want to point out something that hasn't been caught yet. He's going to allow HIV infected people citizenship. Two problems. One being that the gay community and the medical community have long been trying to drop the stereotype that HIV is a "gay disease". This only means MORE immigrants in our country of all LGBT lifestyles OR straight. Second and much much worse - allowing in people with already diagnosed ill health will be a continuing drain on our medical facilities, and our budget. Most immigrants who come here, do NOT have jobs - which means welfare and our tax dollars pick up their tabs. This means higher taxes for us, more stereotyping for gays, and more people into an already overcrowded, overtaxed, and overmedicated country.
Al Franken just 'won' the Senator position in Minnesota, so now we have 60 seats in the Senate…. that is all we needed…

Also the president can't just snap his fingers and make things happen, especially when it comes to domestic policy. He is bounded by laws and for the most part these are things that Congress must be involved in. And in the places he could do things by Executive Order…well it would be better for everyone in the long run if everyone feels part of the process. He's only been in office 6 months and has had to deal with some MAJOR crises, and has done so admirably. Try to be patient and have faith.

I am all for equality, but in light of the current economic times our country is facing, do you really think it is ok to chastise the President for lack of attention to specific community causes. Half our country is out of work, lost their pensions, are in the throws of losing their homes, have children fighting overseas, etc. While I understand your concern, I really think you are being unfair in your comments. The most unjust possible law would be to create the right for any two women to marry each other. Then any two women will have chattel ownership of children and family, the institution of marriage, and own politics in Washington.
