4th Of July Disney Crash Turns Deadly!

A two monorail train crash at Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, FL, early Sunday morning resulted in the death of a Disney monorail driver!!

The crash was the first deadly accident for the theme park's monorail system in its 38 year history!

One of the monorail trains was making its last stops around the park at 2 a.m. after the annual Independence Day fireworks show when the monorail was struck by another train with 21-year-old Austin Wuennenberg behind the wheel.

Wuennenberg was pronounced dead on the scene after not responding to passengers and firefighters alike. The driver and 6 passengers on the monorail that was hit by Wuennenberg's train escaped the accident with only minor injuries.

The park reopened on Sunday, but the monorail will be closed until the investigation of the accident is complete.

Disney has released the following statement regarding the 4th of July tragedy:

"Today, we mourn the loss of our fellow cast member. Our hearts go out to his family and those who have lost a friend and coworker. The safety of our guests and cast members is always our top priority. The monorail is out of service and we will continue to work closely with law enforcement to determine what happened and the appropriate next steps."

We wonder what the real cause of the accident was???

Its not a conspiracy for heavens sake. It was an accident. I live 55 mins from Disney and have been on these things many times, it was bound to happen one day. It's sad someone died but it was just an accident.

  5. 5

    thats really sad :/

  6. 6

    That is so sad.
Oh and to #1- Someone died and all you care about is how recent the news is and perez's weight. You're a stupid idiot.

as a fellow cast member in CA.. Perez you're such a jerk! "We wonder what the real cause of the accident was" it's called compassion! someone lost their life in front of guests and you want to be a douche and say that….

  11. 11

Hmmmm…could it be just an accident? You would think that you might learn from recent posts that speculation & insinuation can be very cruel & hurtful….

  12. 12

2a.m.? Probably fell asleep at the wheel.

  13. 13

You stupid fat fuck. "The real cause"? Explain what you mean by that lard ass. You're an immature and ignorant fatty with absolutely zero compassion for human life. I see you've lost some advertisers, you can thank me and others for continuing to write them letting them know we would never buy products from a company that supports this site. Go fuck yourself doughboy.

  14. 14

Too bad it wasn't you fatboy.

  15. 15

I hate to say it but I have a feeling that IF they release any details about what caused the monorails to crash, it will allegedly be because of something the drivers did. I mean…it's Disney. I mean, everyone who's ever died after a ride turned out to have some mysterious preexisting condition that the family had never known about (with like, one exception). I hope it isn't the case but I have a feeling it will be. And I love Disney.

This is extremely sad, but I feel the need to point out that this incident did not happen around guests, as another commenter states, because it happened at 2 in the morning.

  16. 16

please, I use to work at disney world do you know how many ppl die there on the regular disney usually back then had the money to pay off witnesses and cast members but now with the money troubles that most of the parks are having I'm surprised this got out!

  17. 17

my sister used to work at disney and she still has friends working there, anyone who thinks that the monorail drivers actually drive the monorails is an idiot, they are college program students and they press a button. the monorails are controlled by people in the control tower and for some reason there wasn't anyone in the control tower when the monorails crashed or so that's what is being said by the employees my sister is still in touch with. it wasn't the kids who was drivings fault.

  19. 19

This was not at DisneyLand. It was at DisneyWORLD and it was an accident. There's no "conspiracy" or a need to wonder what "really happened"

  20. 20

Re: hellojessi – Yes, there were guest because it was making its last run on July 4th. Read the article moron. Guests on the train that it hit were hurt and the driver didn't respond to passengers (aka guests) and firefighters.

  21. 21

    He was TEXTING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. 22

Re: Spooge – 12 Agreed. The fireworks on the 4th are pretty incredible to see at Epcot. Too bad this happened.

  23. 23

That's really sad. Condolences to the family.

    Perez you're a dick

  24. 24

I've known Austin since I was 8… this news is hitting all of us at Disney really hard. I hope Disney quickly finds out what happened because all of us are in pieces.

  25. 25

WHO IS ON THE RIDES AT 2 AM???????????????

  26. 26

hey perez, big fan. im a disney cast member, and everyone knew those monorails were full of shit. maybe now they'll update them, its just kinda bullshit that a cast member had to die because of it. they preach "safe D begins with me" but don't practice it.

but srsly, u need to hear some of the gossip we cast members got on these big name celebs who come visit. like the jonas brothers getting drunk at animal lodge after what's his face proposed? and miley cyrus was just here and security had to carry her to her room b/c she was so fuckin drunk! i love my job, the gossip is amazing!!

  27. 27

Re: The Wise One – it aint a ride idiot

  28. 28

    Nice going, idiot.

  29. 29

    oh, that's so sad =(

  30. 30

    A sacrifice to the mouse

  31. 31

Re: Jessreef – yeah I was one of those kids!!!

  32. 32

I work at Epcot. They still do not know what the reason of the crash is. A monorail is supposed to stop within 200 feet of another monorail. There could have been an issue with the sensors, or miscommunication with the driver and tower.

  33. 33

He was rubbing one out while oogling pics of Perez with no shirt Its all P-Nastys fault…………

  34. 34

Thats not entirely true. At a Disney owned resort, there was a monorail crash that killed my friends 7 year old niece. This was about 5 or 6 years ago.

  35. 35

    so here's the thing -
    1. Guests were on it because it was Fourth of July and we were open late. Welcome to the world of Cast Members who work til 4am sometimes during holidays and monorails stay open 2 hours past park close. So suck on that. Check your facts before you go spouting conspiracy theories.
    2. As someone mentioned, there are SO many system checks to prevent this from happening. TEXTING? Are you fucking serious? You really think that one distraction is what made this happen? If that were true, this would've happened years ago. Get off it.
    3. It was NOT Austin's fault, at least not completely. That has not even been proven or close to it. The vehicles were traveling toward each other, and his vehicle was the one that was hit, not the other way around. Please just look at how the pictures show Austin's vehicle (the purple one) was completely annihilated by the pink one. If he had hit the other one, he still would've probably been alive. The other monorail would not have pushed him into the 2nd cab, crushing him instantly. It looks like many people were at fault and it was a freak accident, so so rare that it ended in tragedy. Some things were overrode and some systems failed. No one could've predicted this or really prepared for it.

  36. 36

So, get the fuck off this conspiracy shit or that Austin was texting or he fell asleep. You really think they don't do everything automatic? You all probably think that the Big Thunder Mountain vehicles are driven and steered by the Cast Members too. Or maybe the Rockin Roller Coaster. HA!

  37. 37

Walt Disney World — and everything Disney has done in the last ten years — is manna for white trash and the obese.

  38. 38

I bet the real reason it crashed is there were too many fat American fucks, stuffed on shit from McDonald's, and the weight destroyed the system. Americans are thoroughly gross.

  39. 39

Austin went to my high school, very very sad.

  40. 40

Respect the Perez, or get off his site…fat pig

Really really sad. My prayers go out to his family and friends.

  43. 43

what do you mean by "we wonder what the real cause of the accident was"
There weren't any conspiracies, the system must have gone wrong and it ended in death! Its a sad thing!

  44. 44

Re: SamanthaB – You're saying Americans are gross and you have a picture like that for your profile? haha, jealousy is not flattering sweety

As a Cast Member at Walt Disney World, I can confirm numerous things.

    1. The Pilots DO drive the Monorails. They control everything and go through extensive training. Yes, some are College Program Cast Members.

    2. There is a system called MAPO in place that monitors how close the trains are using block systems. There is always to be one block (200-400 ft. on average between trains, if not more.) Pilots are warned when they are getting close to another train. If they cross into the same block as another train, it activates the emergency brakes and stops the trains. Pilots may only have about 3 red MAPO violations before they are pulled from monorail service.

  47. 47

    3. . The red MAPO signal also activates when the pilot is approaching a SPUR LINE (For switching tracks), an UNPOWERED section of track, or a SWITCH BEAM to a spur line.

    4. The late cast member was in the STATIONARY purple train. The pink train struck the purple train in reverse.

What probably happened was that the PINK TRAIN was signaled to proceed onto a spur line. This is NORMAL when the park is nearing closing time and they are taking trains off the track. There is a spur line RIGHT outside the Ticket and Transportation Center where the accident happened. This is a NORMAL proceedure to have a train in the TTC center while another moves to another track via Spur Line. What appears to have happened is that the SWITCH BEAM was not thrown.

The Switch beam is what allows the train to move another a track. Think of how normal trains operate and change tracks. The pink train was moving at probably 15 MPH when it bypassed the UNTHROWN switch line and continued into the station.

  48. 48

The reason the emergency brakes did not activate is because the RED MAPO signal can be PILOT OVERRIDEN when it goes off, as normal, for Spurlines, Switch Beams and unpowered track. Thus, the pink train pilot was probably overriding the system because he was under the assumption that he was moving onto a switch beam.

More than likely, It was not the late Cast Member's Fault, Nor the fault of the Surviving Pilot. It was not the fault of any guests, no one was texting and it was simply an accident.

  49. 49

One of my friends worked with that guy.
    RIP Austin.

[We wonder what the real cause of the accident was??? ]
Since we now know today that the crash is not the kid (driver)’s fault.
Are you implying the "T…." word?
