Massachusetts Is Amazing, Challenges Federal Government On "Marriage"

The state of Massachusetts just sued the U.S. government this morning over a federal law that defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman!!!!!
As the first state in the U.S. to legalize same-sex marriages, Massachusetts state representatives filed the claim in a Boston federal court, arguing that the Defense of Marriage Act "constitutes an overreaching and discriminatory federal law."
Amen!!!!!!!!!
Before the law was passed in 1996, the federal government acknowledged that defining marital status was the "exclusive prerogative of the states." Because of this federal law's definition of marriage, "same-sex couples are denied access to benefits given toheterosexual married couples, including federal income tax credits, employment benefits, retirement benefits, health insurance coverage and Social Security payments."
We think this is a firm and excellent step in the right direction. You guys in Massachusetts are just wicked awesome!
I hope this finally puts an end to all of this and Marriage continues to be between a man and a woman, but gays are given civil union rights.

i'm from massachusetts. i'm proud to have been born and raised in the most liberal state in the united states of america, but i just moved to california for school, and i have to say, for what is supposed to be the most diverse and accepting state in america, california is kind of a disappointment. rejecting proposition 8 not once, but twice?! really california? i thought there would be more support here. massachusetts all the way!

Yeah, we are the coolest state. We were the center the abolitionist movement two centuries ago and the leader in equal rights for all today. We have health insurance for all, the best education in the country and one of the highest per capita GDPs in the country. Celebs make movies in Boston everyday. Our main city is walkable and we have great beaches. We are a European-American fusion of everything that is best in both countries.

Re: rraacchh – Apply to Commonwealth Healthcare. If you meet the very liberal requirements for low income, you get it for free. Off the top of my head this is something like an income below $36,000. If not you have to buy it. The state has a whole variety of affordable options. 98% of the people are covered. We all have to pay in one way (taxes) or another (fees). The state has negotiated these deals en masse and forbidden companies from excluding anyone. If you do not buy it, the state will just tax you to make up for the cost.

Obviously YOU don't realize that the majority of the world is not Christian. Why should we live our lives to follow YOUR religious beliefs rather than our own? Read the Bible all you want, but remember there are a lot of contradictions in that book. Unless everyone in the world, or even the country, suddenly accepts the same religion it's not right to make laws based on only one group's beliefs.

Spouses cheat on one another cuz they are not happy, or aren't sexually satisfied or are frustrated at work, there is spousal abuse or they simply rush into a "marriage". There is no quick gratification or easy way (which all americans expect) and people don't want to put any effort into making it work. It's sad really.
