Equality Hits A Snag In Maine
Filed under: Gay Gay Gay > Politik
Opponents of the recent legalization of gay marriage in Maine have collected enough signatures on a petition to stop the law from going into effect, forcing a statewide vote in November.
It's the Prop H8te situation all over again.
The law would have gone into effect come September 12th, but now may not come to pass depending on how the vote goes in November.
Judging by the amount of people who signed the petition, we might have a problem. The Stand for Marriage Maine coalition collected more than 55,087 signatures in a month on the petition to put marriage to a vote.
But we have faith.
Remember to vote this coming November!
Just because there isn't a Presidential election, doesn't mean you shouldn't vote! Get out there and make your voices heard!

ooo nooooo wa the fuk is the world cumin 2???
I will! first year i am able to vote, and it is a good one!
as Britney said, love is love… I'll be voting
Civil rights are the purview of the judiciary. This "voting" crap has got to end!
wonderful !
While you're at it- make it so that 50 year old men can marry 13 year old girls, too! And so we can marry trees, animals, fireplaces, etc! We should be able to love who/what we want to love, right? No discrimination, right?
From joemygod blog: "Last month Stand For Marriage was caught lying to Mainers outside of post offices, claiming that their petition actually supported same-sex marriage. But deception by any means is legal in petition drives and the good gentle Christians behind the repeal merely shrugged and kept on lying for the Lord after they were caught."
sounds like the people of Maine have already made their voices HEARD Perez!!!
GO MAINE!!
yes maine! vote for TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE!
I don't get it….what's the big deal about having to get married….at the end of the day its a piece of paper…it doesn't mean you love someone anymore or any less….also, if its voted down it means the majority doesn't want it….you can't say when a where a vote is appropriate or not….otherwise where does that stop…how long before offices like mayor, governor or even president will become appointed positions…
ugh, i'm embarrassed by my state. i blame all the poorly educated portions of Maine so….almost all of it.
*sigh*
haha! i just moved to maine from southern orange county! how funny. first the h8 in CA and now in ME. CRAZINESS!
but rest easy, i'll be sure to spread the good word to vote.
taking it up the ass will never be socially acceptable.
MESS WITH MARRIAGE,MESS WITH GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Re: AprilB – HERE HERE! i AGREE
Perez, "have faith"
Oxymoron!
Hahahahahahaha!
Don't you get it. The majority of Americans do not believe Gays should be married. Marriage isnt a right it is a privilige, so you are not being denied any sort of right. Give it up. Lawmakers who support this stuff are going to lose their jobs eventually, Americans have spoken.
I feel ashamed to be in Maine. I for one will be out there voting for equal rights. Why should there even be this law in the first place??
As a gay man who lives in Portland, Maine. I am so tired of people who have nothing better to do than worry about who I marry. As a country we have so many things that are FUCKED up. Take your NEGATIVE, HATEFUL & BIGOTED energy and do something good for a change. Let me and others like me marry who we choose and find something more positive to focus on. You may even find doing something good make u all the happier.
this makes me wanna move back so i can vote for equality!! =X
The majority has spoken…DEAL WITH IT! You will not kill morality!
i think gays should be allowed to marry. but it doesn't look like its going to happen in Maine for a while.
Awesome job Maine!!!!! It should be the people's choice not the politicians. Give it up and let the residents vote and show just how many people truly are against it. Too bad Mass didn't give us a chance to vote. Instead we were screwed over because the governor's daughter is a carpet muncher.
YES!!! MAINE = DEMOCRACY!
Looks like democracy will be heard in Maine as well… here's to Democracy!
I love democracy in action!
You people make me sick. You should be allowed to marry whoever you want, it shouldn't matter if it's a man or woman. Do you also think woman and black people should have different rights?
Check the peitions, those groups always lie and turn in a bunch of phonies.
AND THIS IS HOLLYWOOD GOSSIP HOW??
Get out and VOTE in November. I strongly urge all residents of Maine to vote AGAINST gay marriage. Hetero marriage is good for children, families and society while gay marriage is none of those things. Americans can't just go marrying anyone they want. You can't marry a close blood relative and you can't marry someone who is already married no matter how much you "love" them. Same thing goes for same sex couples - just because you love your parnter does not mean you should be allowed to marry.
How dare the citizens of a state get a say in what is law and what isn't. They should just have to deal with whatever a few think is good. I hope that every state votes so that the people decide I would think that it would be 60% - 40% but have no idea if they have even done any polls to see if over 40% are for guy marriage in Maine.
this makes me sad
This was one of the first times I had ever been proud of my state, but now I'm just disappointed. Hopefully those who believe in equality for all will show up and vote in november.
Re: Spindoc – Agreed. Much as been learned about the underhanded tactics used to collect these signatures and the HAVE NOT been confirmed yet.
=
It's my hope the fair-minded people of Maine are vigilantly aware of how influences outside of Maine are attempting to tell them how to run their affairs. It's well know that special interest groups, public relations firms, and consultants are building their careers and bank accounts legislating morality by denying civil rights.
Re: Kdel – Really? You are telling me that 55,087 signatures constitutes a majority. NOT! 51% of the eligible voters in Maine would be about 10 times that number!
Re: Gramcan –
Fuck that! Nobody should have the right to vote on my,and other LGBT,rights!
This friggen country needs to get into the 21st century!
If you get to vote then I guess I can, too. I vote that you STFU!
people should be able to love who they want to love, whether its the same sex or not. i hate how maine, the state i live in, is so traditional and closed-minded generally speaking. vote to keep gay marriage!
yay!
keep it up, maine!
You lost California now you're losing Maine. You just cant win can you fatboy.
I LIVE IN MAINE…..20TH MAINE WON THE CIVIL WAR…ROCK ON MANIACS…
Ya the collectors are shady… back in california when they gathered signatures to put prop 8 on the ballot… there was no mention of marriage by the collectors unless you read the petition carefully… they kept callin it… "save the pledge of allegiance in our schools". No where on the november ballot was there a prop for anything like that. when me and my bf saw what it was and mentioned it to the collector, they ripped the clipboard out of our hands and called us sinners and went away. shady if you ask me.
I don't get the comparison btwn two people of the same sex marrying.. two adult consenting human beings—- being the same thing as people marrying pets, trees, 13 year olds & whatever else people compare! These people were at our local 4th of july events that had thousands of people trying to get everyone up to sign the petition! I don't know didn't see like the place/time for it to me! but anyways, Thats my opinion!
So Perez why are you so worried about people voting for this issue? What you really want is the JUDGES changing the law because they feel like it….
So undemocratic of you!!!!
As a Mainer I will be voting in favor of gay marriage. Equal rights for everyone!
I'm usually proud to be from Maine, but today I'm a bit disappointed. All that progress just to be presented with this minor setback. I will be voting in November… equality for all!
Sounds like 55,000 people did make their voices heard.
I live here, I told you this would happen! This sucks, hopefully when the vote comes in Nov. , people will vote for equality!
Amen. Great post!
Amen. Great post Perez!
Re: MaineMaineMaine – I'm from Maine too, and actually, we are one of the most well-educated states in the country. Morgan Quinto rates us in the top 5. For the record, I think marriage should not be legislated at all.
I live in Maine, and up until now have been damn proud of it. I will definitely be voting!
Yes, isn't that wonderful news Perez. We here in CA are sending $$$ to Maine - isn't the web awesome for stuff like that! We're also working on IOWA as well. Can't wait to see the people REPEAL the fraud law that the tyrants from the bench made up then forced on the people of Maine.
GO MAINE! We are sending money YOUR WAY!
If you angle that map about 40 degrees to the left, it kind of looks like 'Prince's profile…
at what point will we stop catering the oddballs? Marriage should remain sacred. Before you know it plural marriage will be on the ballot.
this is why i hate living in maine.
Look fatfuck…. you decided to NIX yourself from the gay community by hurling the ugly F word at Wil.I.Am….
so stop acting like you care about the gay community, because you obviously don't!
