Jackson Funeral Cost Los Angeles Taxpayers $1.4 Million

According to the mayor's office, the memorial service for the King of Pop cost the city of Los Angeles $1.4 million!

Expenses for Tuesday's event included putting extra police on the streets, trash pickup, sanitation and traffic control.

Extra police is a mayjah understatement!!!!

The day of Jackson's funeral would have been a good day to commit a crime, since it took three thousand police officers, about one-third of the El Lay force, to keep the event running smoothly.

The city set up a Website asking for Michael's fans to donate money to take the financial burden off of L.A., which is already in debt for $530 million.

Hundreds of donors gave more than $17,000 through the site, but the city would have received more if they were prepared.

The high volume of traffic on the site caused it to crash repeatedly putting it out of commission for at least 12 hours on the day of the funeral!!!

If you're going to do it, do it right!

“The city attorney does not want something like this happening again, the city paying (the initial costs) for a private event,” said spokesman for Los Angeles City Attorney Carmen Trutanich. “That’s especially in a cash-strapped city, where people have been furloughed or even lost jobs.”

Damn right!

Finally, someone with some common sense!!!!

    dumb…..fucken dumb……..

  2. 2

    …sell more programs.

  3. 3

Didn't I just hear something about the state of California filing for Bankruptcy?

  4. 4

So glad I don't live in CA. Why doesn't the Jackson family pick up the tab.

  5. 5

that is crazy! at least it was orderly and nothing major happened. PLUS…… how cool is it of the jackson's to actually BRING MJ to the memorial. They are all amazing…… Everyone let them have their time to grief without talking shit about MJ

  6. 6

COMPLETELY WRONG. where is the Jackson family??? PAY UP!!!!

  7. 7

    Re: karencarpenter – good idea….
maybe they should sell some more programs…they could make a lot of money

  8. 8

There should be problem for LA paying for this.
Think about all the money the stores in LA makes thanks to all the tourists and MJ fans visiting LA in these days.
LA will get their money back and then some.

Sucks to be an Angeleno, doesn't it? And now that the event is over, I guess everyone is gonna say that it wasn't worth it? That Michael didn't deserve such special treatments? Boo hoo. Los Angeles isn't the Third World, you're in no fucking position to complain.

  10. 10

One thing to bear in mind is that with so many people traveling TO L.A. for the funeral, the city probably made money - hotel tax, food tax, etc. Not to mention that local hotels, restaurants, etc. got a boost in these tough economic times, when many aren't traveling.

  11. 11

Re: RobPnMeShouldB – exactly, why are they picking up the cost? since when does the state pick up funeral costs?

  12. 12

i am really disappointed in the family for not paying atleast part of the bill. the family can afford to pay for it so i don't understand why they wouldn't. hopefully some of the other celebs who went to the memorial will pitch in, its not fair that us in LA have to pay when the majoirty of us didn't even get to go.

  13. Krish says – reply to this

why can't the Jackson family donate?

  14. 14

The Jackson's family should pay the bill!!!! It's just insane they shouldn't have had a public memorial if they couldn't pay for all that comes with it!

  15. 15

That is OUTRAGEOUS! SO ridiculous! & why did they give away FREE tickets?!?!?!?! Also why didn't Janet Pay for the funeral??? Isn't she work 100 million? This is just getting more and more disgusting.

  16. 16

Why doesn't LA bill the Jackson estate?

  17. 17

    Re: janisjoplin

That is exactly what I was going to say…why do people need to make donations to pay for a rich man's funeral. That is bullshit!!!!

  18. 18

    Re: RobPnMeShouldB – Good afternoon :o )

  19. 19

wtf??? why didn't the jacksons offer up the 1.4…like LA needs anymore expenses…fix the 405!!!

  20. 20

WTF!!!Shouln'd everyone pay for their own funeral!!

  21. 21

    i aint paying . . sorry !

  22. 22

If I were a resident of LA, I'd be PISSED. Since when is it a city's job to pay for funeral costs? It's Not! And since it seems that the financial burden fell on taxpayers for this "HERO'S" memorial… Why don't states start picking up the tab for the funerals of the fallen soldiers fighting for our freedom?? Just a thought. And people are saying it's "bringing a lot of money"… I say Bullshit. Those people who flew in probably didn't stay in the fanciest of hotels, and probably flew out as soon as the memorial service was over. They're not sticking around to go gallivanting around town, frolicking through the streets, and donating money to every restaurant and boutique they see along the way.

  23. 23

    Good amount!

Just how much did HE pay in taxes and how much did His concerts give that City in the long run?!

  24. YUCK says – reply to this

I don't get this as someone who has planned events in the past I would have been fired if I threw an event without knowing beforehand who was going to pay for everything and having that information in writing. Who does something like this the person who let the event happen without finalizing these details should b fired. And I think it's very greedy that the were first asking for $4 million wich is what they would still b asking for if ppl wouldn't have demanded straight answers. Btw while watching the news I saw that this included a very swanky lunch for the 3k officers. So we have to pAy so pigs that murdered an innocent youth in Compton can stuff their face? CA is run by idiots and incompetents.

  25. 25

    LA is piss poor. Jeez.

  26. 26

The Jackson family should pay. California already has enough trouble. This was "forced" on California

  27. 27

    az we

  28. 28

    Re: karencarpenter – Great idea!!!

  29. 29

If you watch the news(cnn does not fit in that category this week, the only news coverage they have is *NEWS ALERT* MJ is dead)you know CA has no money. Michael left something behind, Janet has money… why couldn't they pay for their own family members memorial? Who decided it had to be this big event? That or those individuals should be responsible. Or maybe all of the rich upset celebrities in attendance should chip in & cover the cost. NOT the tax paying citizens, half of whom probably couldn't care less about MJ.

  30. 30

If they had common sense the state would not be broke and asking for handouts!

  31. 31

Perez, things like that always cost ££s! Football matches, concerts, big events!

  32. 32

They should have just charged the people that went to the memorial $10 or $15 per person. That would have been a lot of revenue right there!

  33. 33

I don't feel any sympathy for Los Angeles at all. After all, it was their stupid idea to put on such a production. Former presidents don't receive such a grand memorial. He was just an entertainer. LA treated him like a martyr and gave him a huge memorial that cost our bankrupt state even more money. I'm so embarrassed to be from Los Angeles.

  34. jham says – reply to this

    this really angers me.

  35. Aries says – reply to this

Why didn't the family pay it?? If they can afford to be dressed from head to toe in CUSTOM Versace (as requested for the funeral) they really couldn't pay for the funeral?

  36. 36

The city of Los Angeles must design a better website that doesn't crash.
People will continue to donate money towards the costs of the event.

  37. 37

Boo-Hoo! The city of Los Angeles was more than happy to foot the bill to persecute Michael in a court of law. Therefore, they can foot the bill for his memorial service as far as I am concerned. They owe him that for ruining his life.Michael never recovered from that.I have no sympathy. None for that city. At all.

  38. 38

All of the crazed loser MJ fans that flooded the city for a chance to stand around and watch the funeral on a large television should foot the bill. Seriously…if you have that much time on your hands, get a fucking hobby.

  39. 39

Count me in with everyone else who says the City made money from hotel taxes, his concerts etc. No one complained about that, did they?

  40. 40

It was a waste to have most of those cops out there anyways because everything was closed off and not as many people as previously expected showed up. People preferred to stay home and watch the memorial on TV because they knew they weren't going to get any where near the Staples Center without a ticket and wristband. One of the newscasters said the cops were just standing around chatting, drinking coffee and eating donuts.

  41. 41

and 3/4's of those officers were not needed. remember the 'news' reports? Over(1) 2 (1.5) Million people are expect to converge on the city-how many were down there? aprox. 50,000 and probably 1/2 were trying to sell something. I think every outlet (including you perez) that said millions were going to show, and the loudmouth idiots too that said it-the jacksons, al (I throw myself in the middle of any black event) shapton, jesse jackson and of the news outlets, charge cnn double for worrying LA. as for viewership(FROM THIS COUNTRY)-after proclaiming him as the most popular star, god, saint EVER-as many people watched Regan's funeral (and a large amount of our pop. was not even born when he was in office) and Princess Diana's funeral was watched more and SHE is not even FROM this COUNTRY-so much for him being the most famous person EVER. I hope cnn and the rest of the networks realize what idiots they were with the amount of airtime they gave to the story, considering most of it was lies, rumors, speculation. -ex. Nancy Grace last night - a $25k (whatever the name of the casket) DISAPPEARS right before 20 HELICOPTERS, what has happened to MICHAEL JACKSON'S BODY???? -she is trying to get people to watch, like it was IMPOSSIBLE for the casket to get out of the staples center with the helicopters watching. the Staples Center has underground exits, but never mind that, Nancy Grace is starting rumors about the body for everyone. bitch

  42. 42

Re: JigSaw – yeah, i think maybe we should all move to cali and have elaborate, expensive funerals for our loved ones and expect everyone else to pay for it……..sounds like a policy Obama would adhere too………esp. if i'm a trough feeder…….

  43. 43

maybe stupidity like this is why cali's broke……something like the fatass in office in PA, FUCK RENDELL!!!!! PA's next in line b/c of this piece of scum that belongs under MJ's dirty dead balls…..

  44. 44

    Re: mistique
    I agree…

  45. 45

I don't care if the city businesses made money from this. Goverment entities should not pay for a private citizen's memorial service. The Jacksons should pay this or they should have had a private service. No wonder CA is in such financial disarray.

  46. 46

    what about the jackson family?

  47. 47

When i arranged my father's funeral WE had to pay for police escort and there was 200 people there. Sorry, but Jackson's need to pay for the increased security…NOT the tax payers.

  48. 48

What horseshit! MJ had more money than God…look at the mega mansion he was renting when he died. His family is also rich…this should not be held one the taxpayers.

  49. 49

Re: mistique – by your logic every city should have to pay for the funeral cost of everyone who was found innocent. and before you say its different because he is famous, its not everyone who is found innocent still has their life ruined to some degree.

  50. 50

Send that bill to the Jackson family. They got plenty !

  51. YUCK says – reply to this

Michael was the most famous man on earth more ppl would have been pissed if he didn't get some sort of public funeral. Over one billion watched on tv this is now the most viewed televised program EVER! Did they need 3k cops at staples center? No, hell no! The city just jumped the gun. This all comes to a lack of judgement by city officials. I am certain if the Jackson family was told ahead of time that they would b responsible for the costs ahead of time then they could have made an educated decision ahead of time. Even in death this man can't rest. Bottom line LA dropped the ball again. R we really surprised with villaraigosa at the helm he is vacationing in Africa probably with tax payers money.

  52. 52

It should come from his estate. End of.

  53. 53

  54. 54

Re: YUCK – what do you consider a swanky lunch? cuz all they got was a box lunch which is like a sandwich, soda, and maybe chips.

  55. 55

everyone's got such good points!!! my only other suggestion would be - where the hell are all of his "great friends"??? you know the ones - the one's that totally dropped him like he was a pariah during the trial - but then showed up to cry for the camera's spouting what a "great man" he was - with all the legal crap the jackson's are tied up in right now - where the hell are all his famous friends? what's stopping brook shields, usher, liz, mayer, all those tools - cough it up!!!

  56. YUCK says – reply to this

Re: highboo – ur right the city did make tons of money after the memorial I couldn't be seated at any local downtown restaurant without a half n hour wait. Michael payed millions of dollars in taxes to the state of Cali he wasn't the one who orchestrated this. The city and aeg did this someone needs to get fired. This is like going to the mall and those annoying kiosk lotion vendors just grabs u and applies lotion on u and then tries to charge u for a full jar. Should u have to pay too?

  57. 57

thats like, 4 cents per person, get over it

  58. 58

Whether MJ was a kid toucher or not, he was definitely a drug addict that died by overdose. He's not the kind of person to be honored legally by our elected representatives.

In fact, how about the Senate and the Congress worry about the economy instead of how Michael Jackson is represented. Jackson Lee was an idiot to even bring this up while people in her state are losing jobs. King can comment all he wants…after he fixes the economic situation in his state. Everyone should stop trying for the daily soundbyte and get back to doing their f*cking jobs!

  59. 59

Also one needs to think about all the money this brought in — hospitality industry. But it is a huge amount of money.

  60. L <3 says – reply to this

what i wanna know is who the fuck paid for the laker parade?

la asking for donation is tacky

  61. 61

I live here in CA and I have to say that I am one of the ones that is PISSED OFF about this. In no way shape or form should WE have to pay for this! The memorial was the FAMILY'S idea. THEY should have paid for ALL the security and making it extremely inconvenient for anyone working in that area. Plus they closed shit down around the mortuary AND the Bev Hills Hotel while the family had a nice little lunch or whatever. That is complete BS and unnecessary. I understand the fans wanting to be a part of this and all but I think even MICHAEL would have wanted to pay for it. And what about all his so called "friends"…they are all rich. Why not drop some $$$ down to cover costs and not make this look bad. Villaragoso is OUT for this crap. begging for donations my ass…pathetic!

  62. 62

Re: YUCK – Totally! LA politicians have no idea what's going on. Gary, Indiana would have LOVED to host this event and would not have complained about the cost, but obviously that would not have been the right venue. People who don't understand why MJ fans around the world needed this are never going to "get it". City of LA needs to stop passing blame and get their act together. A website built in an afternoon is not going to function the way it's supposed to when thousands of people are trying to click (I'm no IT person, but even I could figure that out). Another case of City of LA dropping the ball and blaming others for being broke. This should have been a big pay day in the form of tourism.

  63. 63

Re: gdeeaz – Not all innocent people are international treasures who change the lives of millions of people around the world for generations.

  64. 64

Re: InvalidUserName – Oh please. The city doesn't get any of that $$ right now. it goes to the hotels and airlines since they almost all flew out right after the event. Get serious. What a BS excuse and completely IGNORANT.

  65. 65

Re: Aries – Versace donated the dudds, Land Rover donated the vehicles…The Jacksons were able to find donors for the event, why couldn't LA City? Oh yeah, because they relied on a website probably built for free by some teenager in an afternoon. Don't let them fool you, the city budgets for extraordinary events such as this.

  66. 66

I watched the entire 2 hour memorial at home and thought it was very moving. So I donated $5 online. Thank you, LA.

  67. 67

Re: gdeeaz – Yeah right, They paid over $45K for those "box lunches" from a restaurant over 80 miles away!!! No RESTAURANT provides BOX LUNCHES! they should have gone to a deli that could have done it for only $15K according to one of the city councilmen. Don't speak unless you have all the facts!

  68. 68

I think they family should pay for it too. All of them combined have to be worth more then the city itself. I'm pretty sure the head honchos who run LA saw $$$ so quickly when they heard there was going to be a public memorial, they jumped too quickly and didn't plan things out and now the people of california have to pay for it. And I really don't understand how that city is poor. Don't celebs shop there all the time? How bout they ask their neighbor Beverly Hills to help out.

  69. 69

California is such a fucked up place. When they're whining about not being able to pay for Lakers victory parades and public funerals, there is something wrong!! I bet this will eventually come back on taxpayers NATIONWIDE! Unfair! All you CA douchebags insist on living out there in that smog and traffic-choked hellhole so this is what you get! I live in Nebraska. Yes, we don't have mountains and oceans and movie stars but at least the air is clean and normal middle-class folks can afford to pay for basic stuff unlike California! Hopefully an earthquake will just shake you guys right off into the Pacific Ocean! Good riddance!

Re: PrincessTee – pls don't post anymore u really don't know what ur talking about

  71. 71

Should have just had the service over at the Scientology digs, those morons could cough up the cash and besides don,t they have their own goon squad.Lisa Marie and the rest of the weirdos over there were trying to get him to join when she convenietly married him. Hmmm

  72. 72

how much money did MJ bring to the city of los angeles through performances and tourists to his home? probably in the 10s-100s of millions.

  73. 73

Fuck you, Perez you can't handle the fucking truth. That's why you refuse to post my comments. Fuck you! You sure like to fan flames…Just remember to do that while you burn in hell, maybe you will burn slower, BITCH.

  74. 74

this is sad. 1.4 million is pocket change in the grand scheme of things.

Americans and especially LA should be proud to foot the bill as Michael Jackson is: THE GREATEST ENTERTAINER THAT EVER LIVED; an American citizen living in their neck of the woods; and is the celebrity who has donated the most to charities.

His estate and death (like Elvis and Graceland) will continue to bring in revenue and pay taxes to the city for many more years to come. So shut up already about the cost of MJ's Memorial. Be respectful for a man who has done nothing but love his fans, give money to charities (even in death 20 percent of his estate) and entertain generations of people.

  75. 75

Re: MyOpinionOnly – the reason they used that place was because they had a contract with them already and they could provide the amount of food they needed. there are not many local delis that can provide that much food in a few hours. and yes restaurants do provide box lunches. i work at a restaurant and we often provide box lunches for events. i do agree that they could have cut the cost by buying from a closer place but they decided to go with a place they had a ongoing relationship with and could rely on to get it done it a timely fashion. everybody screwed up with this, the family, the city, and AEG

  76. 76

Thas nothing compared to what Michael gave to charities

  77. 77

wow, we needed to pay EXTRA money to the useless police? all they did was just sit all nice and comfy on their uglyass bikes and act all high-and-mighty for being "involved" w/ the mj memorial. btw, what happened to all the OTHER MILLIONS/BILLIONS OF TAX MONEY paid by the public?

  78. 78

it wont happen again, there is no other Michael Out there!

  79. 79

The city got stuck with this abomination because of our STUPID demoncratic mayor. Let him pay for it, or better yet make the Jackson's pay for it out of their money. they wanted this abominable stage show to glorify their pedophile bother, so let them pay!

  80. 80

Here's an idea… Rather than all the taxpayers of LA who are struggling just to keep from losing their homes pay, why doesn't MJ's celebrity friends pay?? Shit, MJ's estate itself was worth what.. $500 million dollars, and yet the fucking government would rather have the poor people of LA pay for everything.. Without even asking or telling us BEFOREHAND??????? HEFUCKINGLLO!?!?!?!?!? No fucking wonder our country is in the shitter! Fucking dumbasses!! Thanks for fucking us up the ass even more!!

  81. 81

thats y the Jackson's should have been forbidden from doing this. that money could have been used for our troops fighting for our country. why dont they memorialize them like this. i am an MJ fan but damn this really sux.

  82. 82

Re: Snickers – Sounds like your talking out of your ass my friend. I may live here but I certainly don't feel I should have to pay for this crap and hell, I'm not a Lakers fan either! We didn't have a choice in this situation so you cannot blame the residents here. But yet for you to condone a whole vision of murder and death to feel better about your state….man am I glad you live in NB! You are a horrible person.

  83. 83

    Re: YUCK – I agree.

  84. 84

Re: Hate Low Class People – First off it shows just how ignorant you are… Arnold is a Repulican..NOT a Democrat! Sheesh…I don't like the guy either, but at least i can read and get my facts right before I call them a name!

  85. 85

Re: gdeeaz – I can understand having a contract. But the amount of $$ spent was completely ridiculous considering that almost all of it is for the pay to the officers. The lunches are only 1 small part. I still say that they had plenty of time to figure this shit out. And why in the hell did we HAVE to provide them lunches? Yeah, they all screwed up but somehow the Jacksons come out smelling like roses while our city looks like shit for coughing this up. It was a gross extravagence that could have easily been covered by them. After all, aren't the rest of us mere mortals supposed to pay for our own memorials? I liked MJ at one point too….but it still defies the point that this was the family's idea..they shoudl have paid for it. Regardless.

  86. YUCK says – reply to this

Re: gdeeaz – WTF r u talking about this is LA not a little city there r tons of delis that can make that much food especially since they would have had advanced warning and last I checked during lunch time most ppl buy their own food my employer or my city doesn't pay for it. These asshole cops wanted to b there as much of the fans. I heard one as he was being interviewed telling a reporter it was the most exciting day on the job for him.

  87. 87

let me get this straight, we're paying for a rich man's funeral?!? a rich man who also has rich friends!?!

i love mj, but this is ridiculous!

  88. 88

Sad, Perez, sad. The city made money on the influx of people and they let officers go home. Poor MJ. RIP sweetie.

  89. 89

Re: MyOpinionOnly – You're the one thats ignorant. He said Democratic MAYOR. Not Democratic Governor. Learn how to read before you start calling people ignorant. Because the Mayor of LA is indeed a democrat.

  90. 90

and they are handing out IOUs to the taxpayers! Freaking charge whoever put on the event.

  91. 91

Re: YUCK – Can you really blame him for being happy because he got to do something he considered cool for his job? You make it sound like its the cop's fault he was there and now the city owes money. LA officials wanted them there. That cop just lucked out by being there and having something exciting to do. Because he wanted to be there, doesn't make it a bad thing. You're just a cop hater in general and want to point out everything wrong with the cops.

  92. 92

Re: highboo – I'm sorry but how exactly did MJ "change the lives of millions of people around the world for generations"?
What laws did he pass? What war did he stop? What civil rights did he fight for? What major historical event was he responsible for? What new form of art did he develop? What scientific, technical or medical breakthroughs did he make? Did he ever save anyone's life?
He was a SINGER, not Jesus, Yuri Gagarin, Nelson Mandela, Pablo Picasso, Nicola Tesla, Albert Einstein, Marie Curie or Martin Luther King for crying out loud! What he gave to the world are a few good songs to remember the 80s by, and a couple funny dance moves.

  93. 93

All those rich pricks who got free limelight and they want taxpayers to pay for that shit! unbelievable!! Hell NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! thats a crock of major shit! I would NEVER pay that shit!!

  94. 94

    How dare those Jacksons!!!

  95. 95

fuckin Ushers all crying and making a big deal out of everything and got publicity..let THAT fucker pay for it if he fuckin loved MJ so much! A million dollars is freaking pocket change to that MJ wannabe.

  96. 96

This is bogus reporting. It sounds as if we'll be paying more taxes for the service and we will not. Los Angeles residents pay incredibly high taxes and so did Michael Jackson for civic matters and services, this included. We pay for every event and service that happens in L.A. Here (MJ memorial) they are just giving us the number that will be taken out of an account that's already been funded with our tax money. This is bogus and it's just people who need to say something trying to say something about nothing. Money is always allocated to accounts that cover "extraordinary" events, the money has funded such events for decades. Our tax dollars (directly/indirectly) pay for every damn thing that happens in L.A. parades, the mayor's events, marches (Prop 8!!!!), protests, memorials, etc. Michael Jackson paid his taxes and I'm sure he paid close to the amount it cost or more!!! It is not costing us more, they are simply using money that was there for such matters as they always do and this time are just giving us a number!!!!!!

  97. 97

Shame on the Jackson's and AEG for not picking up the tab!

  98. 98

Further, I received a ticket and was in attendance at the memorial. It was a great honor. Anyhow, The police who were there to "maintain order" were on a paid vacation. They were texting, taking pictures, talking, laughing, and of course their favorite, being rude without due cause (to be fair only a couple were rude). There were more of them than civilians, or it seemed. I know they had to be prepared for anything, but can it also be seen as mismangaement to have such an overwhelming presence where most of them were just having a good ol' time and not doing much of anything?

  99. 99

I feel that the Jackson family should have worked out something with LA in terms of cost and etc. To those bitching I know this will be hard for you but try to work out some perspective. You personally may not have given a damn what they did with Michael and his passing, but for your opinion there were 200 more people who DID care. Who DID want something public that they could all share in. In the real world a tax payer doesn't get to pick and choose what they do and don't want to pay for. If you hate the war you still pay for it, suck it up. If you hate federally funded programs that you don't agree with, you pay for it. SUCK IT UP. There was NO WAY in hell there wasn't going to be a public memorial, this was bound to happen. The City tried to find ways to ease the burden on the tax payer, most likely because of some unwillingness to work between the family. As for the rest that say the city will make it up. This won't happen immediately and will take time to trickle through. If you're mad you gotta pay that in LA then be mad you've got a bad govt. system that plays hard and fast with the people's money to even PUT them billions on debt.
