On her Twitter, which features an awkwardly MySpace-esque photo of herself in a two-piece bathing suit in some backyard, she wrote, "We are here in Botswana, South Africa! Wow what a long flight!"
Uhmmmm…. The Republic of Botswana is its own country.

It is true that there is also a country in Africa by the name of South Africa, but if you knew anything about Africa, you would know that Africa is split up into informal regions. These regions are often referred to as North Africa, East Africa, SOUTH AFRICA, and West Africa. So at least she knew what region of Africa she was in. she probably knows more about Africa than you do. Have you ever been there? Probably not.

If she meant it as "south Africa" then she would not have capitalized the "S" in south. When referring to direction the word is never capitalized, only when referring to a specific location such as "South Dakota" vs "south Dakota". Technically it would be southern Africa not South Africa. You go in a 'southern' direction and not a "South" one. It shouldn't be capitalized if it is not part or a name.
