"Upcoming Military Robot Could Feed on Dead Bodies"

Really???? CLICK HERE to read the article accompanying this headline.

Upcoming Military Robot Could Feed on Dead Bodies

It could be a combination of 19th-century mechanics, 21st-century technology — and a 20th-century horror movie.

A Maryland company under contract to the Pentagon is working on a steam-powered robot that would fuel itself by gobbling up whatever organic material it can find — grass, wood, old furniture, even dead bodies.

Robotic Technology Inc.'s Energetically Autonomous Tactical Robot — that's right, "EATR" — "can find, ingest, and extract energy from biomass in the environment (and other organically-based energy sources), as well as use conventional and alternative fuels (such as gasoline, heavy fuel, kerosene, diesel, propane, coal, cooking oil, and solar) when suitable," reads the company's Web site.

That "biomass" and "other organically-based energy sources" wouldn't necessarily be limited to plant material — animal and human corpses contain plenty of energy, and they'd be plentiful in a war zone.

EATR will be powered by the Waste Heat Engine developed by Cyclone Power Technology of Pompano Beach, Fla., which uses an "external combustion chamber" burning up fuel to heat up water in a closed loop, generating electricity.

The advantages to the military are that the robot would be extremely flexible in fuel sources and could roam on its own for months, even years, without having to be refueled or serviced.

Upon the EATR platform, the Pentagon could build all sorts of things — a transport, an ambulance, a communications center, even a mobile gunship.

In press materials, Robotic Technology presents EATR as an essentially benign artificial creature that fills its belly through "foraging," despite the obvious military purpose.

I don't want to read the article… The headline scares me enough!

  2. 2

Mario stand where he can see you and play dead….

  3. 3

Ok, that doesn't sound safe if it were true, which i doubt it! Another classic case of humans creating something they shouldn't because they are idiots!

  4. 4

If that were possible then what if the robot got damaged, it would probably start eating the living too. Then we would have a homicidal robot eating everything in its path!

  5. 5

Maybe they could make a robot to feed on the massive bloat that is Perez Hilton

  6. 6

    awesome!

  7. 7

well what if it tried to gobble up a body that wasnt dead….sounds like someone watches too much scyfy channel if u ask me….

  8. 8

Yikes! This seems like it could go horribly wrong, right?

  9. 9

Maybe they could send him over to my house after my next party–would a great help to clean up the drunks and trash…

  10. 10

…I feel for the funeral homes that may lose profits.

  11. 11

ya, that fuckin rocks! i want one!

  12. 12

the article came from 'sci tech' doesn't mean that it is going to come true and if everyone went to the site, the picture of the machine looks like a little mower, not the movie pic above. besides, people would have an uprising about corpses being 'eaten', they want them sent home.

  13. 13

Sounds a lot like Kate Gosselin.

  14. 14

    Cool

  15. 15

  18. HK says – reply to this

Isn't it bad enough that we're going through GLOBAL WARMING!?
The government is just wasting money on something that could wrong and eat us ALL.
They even said it can go on by itself for months & even YEARS.

  19. 19

    New Earth's First Cylon?

  20. 20

    I dont mean Robocop…

  21. 21

    Hmmm…can anyone say…Terminator?

  22. 22

The robot can also eat plants, any bio fuel will work, dead bodies is just one of the things that could keep it going. This is a great thing as we move closer to not having actual people on the battlefield. What an amazing achievement.

  23. 23

    Re: HK

Global Warming? You are not very bright. Al Gore has already been proven to be full of shit and using bogus science to back up his suspect claims. Unchain yourself from the tree and read both sides of the issue.

    Re: brainchild

woah, why's everybody hating on perez?? He's awesome!

  26. 26

    wow

  27. 27

    Uhh holy shit.
Once you start dealing with robots you're getting into such a risky biz. What happens when everyones got robots and like some people have said something goes wrong and they start murdering living humans? I'm sure this would be a DEFINATE task that terrorists would love to create a reality. Having murderous robots out to kill and they don't have to refuel them or anything for years?.. this is a mistake waiting to happen we have enough death as it is, stop creating more things to kill and harm others.

  29. 29

Don't live humans have just as much energy as dead ones if not more? Can this thing confuse and unconcious human being for a dead one? Uuhh, I wouldn't want to take that chance.

  30. 30

    WOW…. scary shit!

  32. 32

    It's Robo Cop!

  33. 33

So if it eats organic material how does it tell between live and dead bodies? You know we're organic too.

  34. 34

wtf. that's frightening. think of what could go wrong during testing!!

  35. 35

    yuck

  36. 36

Re: SheriMoonFireFly – 28 Hi all too!
    .
    Love the analogy!

  37. 37

    haha thats so creepy…
    awesome.

  38. 38

LOL what if the robot turns psycho and starts eating and killing live people :0

  39. 39

ewww that sounds really creepy…i dont like the idea wut if it messes up AHHHH

  40. 40

    Oh what a wonderful world….

  41. 41

Wow wonder if flying cars will come true, after reading that who know lol.

  42. 42

Re: SheriMoonFireFly – Now that was funny!

  43. 43

why the hell would u make that shit??? It just has 'wrong' written all over it.

  44. 44

Mario, how do you deal, what do you do against the stress. i am serious. I seem to really click with you, you should let us know what you do to keep yourself sane AND healthy.

  45. 45

ewwwwww……that is fuckin scary!!! our government is gonna let these robots work for us?!?!?! i see a scary glimpse of a half eaten human population fighting against cannabilistic robots LOL ….thats some crazy shit!!!

  46. 46

This is horrible. Eating human corpses, to be turned into fuel, it's disgusting and disrespectful to the dead and another reason this country deserves to be bombed to hell and back.

  47. 47

    Well that's a horrible idea.
Gee, I can't see ANYTHING going wrong with this. Do you?
    Talk about a lia-freaking-bility.

  48. 48

I've read about more stupid military inventions than this, but it does seem possible, technologically speaking, so I think it's time someone tells the Pentagon it can't have it's necro-fuel robot.

  49. 49

Re: Angel88 – whoa that´s so scary horror movie making real HELP!!!!! c´mon guys let´s go to that lab and destroy all those robots until they eat us :-S

  50. 50

Why feed on the remains of humans? Odd. What would prevent them from attacking and eating real humans? This won't be developed but such a whimsical dream.
