The Biggest Selling Artist Of 2009?

It's only July, but it looks like Michael Jackson may posthumously become 2009's top-selling artist.
Naturally, since his death, Jackson record sales have skyrocketed, and according to industry website Hits Daily Double, Sony Music has shipped more than 8 million CDs globally since the singer died, and that doesn't include downloads.
Prior to Jackson's death, Taylor Swift's brills Fearless dominated the charts.
And certainly there will be "repackaged titles, possibly some previously unreleased material and the DVDs of the concert rehearsals" to follow.
The King lives on!

It's really sad… if all the people who purchased music after his death had bought his record like a month ago he could have gotten out of the terrible debt he was in..and thus not be a stress case trying to do 50 concerts

I don't get it, if people were such fans of his music, why didn't they buy the albums before he died? Things might be worth more after death, but if you are buying it for your own personal use, having it worth more does nothing. Kinda sad when you aren't really valued until you pass.

Jackson broke his own record with the entire Top 10 pop catalog chart positions being occupied by him. A further 2.2 million downloads were sold on top of the prior 2.6 million. Jackson's music demand since his death has surpassed those of Elvis Presley and John Lennon after their sudden deaths. If Michael finishes this week with 6 entries in the top 10 best selling albums that will be phenomenal. Nobody has ever done that in the history of Billboard. It would break another record. People started to buy again because all the radions and Tv started to play his music again and people remembered him. His music is timless. You still hear his music from the 80's out in clubs.

I disagree that MJ was not shown this attention in life. hello? does he not hold the Guinness records for best-selling entertainer ever and best-selling album of all time? he accomplished this with the help of his legions of fans and in his lifetime!!! For myself, I cannot seem to get enough of listening to his music lately. It is true that we take talent for granted. being in the news reminding people that he will never record again brings back memories that make people want to share those memories and others to try to cash in. his sales will go down again. the thing is, if these sales happened when michael was alive, it would not have helped him, he would have spent it on something. did he really need $100,000 a month house? all those bodyguards? he kept blocking sales of various items of his 'stuff' , stuff he hasn't seen in years, maybe has never used, but he had a sickness of collecting and hoarding among other things.

I am fundamentally opposed to the charts counting when someone dies. Only because, I've seen too many dead people win Oscars, just because they died. There needs to be a rule that 'retires' celebrities when their life ends. You want to buy a CD or a DVD, go ahead, but it shouldn't turn them into Tupac, with record companies dredging the bottom for any scrambled up recording they can find on the cutting room floor, releasing it as a "raw, unknown demo tape", for the next 5 years.
