Brüno Banned!

| Filed under: AnglophiliaFilm FlickersSacha Baron Cohen

Brüno is officially banned from theaters in the Ukraine!!!

The Ukraine's Culture Ministry claims the controversial film is "immoral" as well as being "obscene and improper"!!

Prudes!

After viewing, the Culture Ministry decided the film could potentially "cause damage to public morals" and overall, Sacha Baron Cohen displayed an "artistically unjustified exhibition of sexual organs and sexual relations, homosexual acts in a blatantly graphic form, obscene language, sadism, and antisocial behavior which could damage the moral upbringing of our citizens."

No surprises here, considering the former Soviet country banned Cohen's last film, Borat, in 2006 for similar reasons.

The actual surprise comes from across the pond where UK theatres will be releasing a "teen-friendly" edit of Brüno on July 24th for viewers 15 and under!

Almost two minutes of footage have been cut from the original edit for the teen crowd, but we see this as a ploy for more $$$$$$!

Brüno debuted at #1 in the UK!

Which scenes do U think got the axe in the censored cut???

  6. 6

Hmmmm… "Vas up with dat?" So, making fun of accent is just fine, but any joke about gays brings out a ranting Perez screaming "homophobe, hate, blah blah" Ironic.

  7. 7

Surely its 15 and over in the UK seeing as its going to be rated a 15 ?!

  8. 8

    Hah…..an american calling other country's prude =))))

Just watch the uncensored European version and you´ll see how prude your country is.

  9. 9

LDC: I think you would love fab in those Bruno shorts! :)

I'll wait and see this movie on DVD. Odd that they are banning this. I review gay porn for another site and have seen many movies that were filmed in this area of the world.

NOW WE KNOW WHY PEREZ IS ENDORSING THE MOVIE AS "GOOD". THE ADVERTISERS PAY HIS SALARY! PEREZ IS A LYING SNAKE AND WOULD SAY HE LIKED IT WHETHER HE DID OR NOT. TALK ABOUT SELL OUT!

  18. 18

I want this boy to ride the Buffalo with me, he is so fine!!!!

  19. 19

It is a ploy to get more money, they said so themselves. They said cause so many teens under 18 were trying to get in but didnt have ID as they werent old enough they decided to edit it so they could see it. Im 18 and i went on sunday and the cinema was full! Most people were like 18-25 so it makes sense to make one for younger people. It was hilarious!!!

  20. 20

ha! they'd need to cut like EVERYTHING

  21. 21

hmm… i dont know. maybe the scene where his dick is swinging around for 30 seconds during his pilot tv episode…. just a guess.

it shouldnt be banned its only a fucking movie for gods sake!!!!!!its jus fun!!everyone needs 2 take the stick out of their asses n get the hell over it!!!

  27. 27

I woudl see the edited version…but no desire to see any private body parts on the big screen or little screen for that matter….looks funny but from what I have heard and read….I wouldnt enjoy seeing it…now the edited version…wish they would offer that here.

  28. 28

People don't understand how lucky they are to live in north America where diversity and religious freedom is encouraged. Ukraine is a country mostly run by religion and they have different customs and beliefs over there. They are not prudes, but strongly religious. Who cares if they banned this stupid movie. It's not like it is Oscar material or anything. All they did wad ban a movie and people are talking shit about them. Well at least they aren't like those corrupt countries who ban women from education and treat them like animals. Everyone needs to relax and calm down about this. Let them do what they want and shut the hell up!

  29. 29

yeah its gonna be a 15 but both the uncut and censored versions will be on at cinemas coz all the little kids were whinging that they couldnt see it. obviously the stuff with the dildo and the gay sex at the beginning will get the chop and the dancing dick bit

  30. 30

I'll wait and see this movie on DVD.
The people in Ukraine's Culture Ministry are dumbs.
And yeah i hate my own country

  31. 31

I heard they left out a scene where he gave himself a blow job.

  32. 32

i think hes stupid and not funny

  33. 33

A little perspective is probably a good thing. It's a fact that only 40 years ago the producers of Bruno and the owners of the theaters screening it would all be arrested and convicted on obscenity charges, and even the people themselves would tend to avoid the film because the morality code was still in effect then. Now we have a nation with no personal morality, and the stability and safety of 40 years ago is completely gone, along with the financial security.

  34. 34

ukraine is still thinking they the shit ? A country that has been rolled over more times than any other in history ? A country struggling with its GDP, exporting immigrants at huge rates are banning this movie? I say this, Sasha is too good for them.

I have to say i was really disappointed by Bruno. I understand Baron's desire to shock and scare, but this felt like an unnecessary reason to make people uncomfortable with their sexuality. In this day and age, I dont think homosexuality is such a "scare" or "shock", nor should it be. I feel like this movie took people a step back in terms of gay stereotypes.

  36. 36

    OOOOOO…banned from the Ukraine…the horrors!

  37. 37

    Re: HairFlairs – Asshole.

  38. 38

So I am originally from Ukraine, so it saddens me what you guys have been saying here about my country. Oh well. As far as I know all my friends have already seen Bruno, so I don't know how it's banned. Secondly, as for being overly religious (may be people over 60) - that's what I thought when I first came to America. Finally, I guess, I just wanted to say that I realize that most of you learn from your government to get involved with what other countries do…but I think it is wiser for everyone to just mind their own business.

Re: Alisaurus88 – Ali, I wouldn't worry too much about what a handful of anonymous posters here think, let alone Perez. He doesn't live there, and doesn't put food on the Ukraines table either. These few people posting don't speak for an entire country, and surely don't speak for me as an American. Please be cautious about what the tabloids publish, and what you allow yourself to believe about the world. It's a very dangerous thing to believe everything you read on the web - especially from a small amount of anonymous people on a tabloid website that could never speak or an entire country, or their generation.

Most Americans know better than allowing some absurd tabloid to dictate to them what to believe. So should you.

  40. 40

    hahaha!!!

  41. 41

was the best movie ! so funny and i think they are banning it because they don't like the sexual part of the movie and you no what i think its amazing that Bruno is doing something.. like he is not afraid to do something that may piss a whole lot of people off. Congrats.

  42. 42

    Bruno is boring.

  43. 43

Obviously they're gonna take out all the good stuff.

  44. 44

i think bruno sucked ass and it should be banned from our theaters in america too. i loved borat and im never offended by anything, but this shit just wasnt funny and it was just a shitty porn,

  45. 45

obviously the dick swinging around in different versions.

  46. 46

oh, plus the dildo exercise machinery he had in his hotel room. along with the disgusting brawd with the giant boobs who was beating him with the S&M whips.

  47. 47

Re: Alisaurus88 – Yes, Ali. Remember that it's PEREZ minding the business of your home country, not all of us here in the U.S. To each his own. Don't take this guy's site seriously. Glad to have you here, and everyone can see what they want!

  48. 48

The scene where Bruno's dick says, 'Bruno!"

  49. 49

Jesus tap-dancing Christ! I have 2 words for the Ukrainians: VERKA SERDUCHKA. How on God's green Earth can a gay comedy be more "morally destructive" than allowing a transvestite to prance about on a national entertainment stage for the past 18 years? Talk about mixed messages. They let this guy represent the nation at the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest, which was broadcast nationwide for FREE TO EVERYONE OF ALL AGES, but won't allow a movie to be shown that 95% of the country's youth can't afford to go see anyway.

  50. 50

although bruno makes fun of homosexuals, it's nowhere near as homophobic as verka serduchka is - verka serduchka is really what people think of homosexuality and transsexuality in ukraine; something that can not be taken seriously, it's just disturbing and the only thing good about it is that you can joke about it.

and although it got banned from theaters, it's still freely available on the internet or on pirated dvd's/videocd's. it's real easy to get the movie in ukraine - just not in theaters.

    funny
