Orphan Scares Adoption Groups!!!

The adoption community has banded together to protest Orphan, a horror movie opening next Friday, in fear that it will fuel negative attitudes toward real-life orphans.
"We are concerned that in addition to its intended entertainment value, this film will have the unintended effect of skewing public opinion against children awaiting families both in the United States and abroad," says a letter from the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute to Warner Bros.
Some adoption advocates are calling for a boycott of the film, which follows a childless couple who adopt an evil child.
Seriously?!
Warner Bros. says that it is considering adding a pro-adoption message at the end of the film when it comes out on DVD.
Jeff Medefind of the Christian Alliance for Orphans believes that because the film "seems to suggest that orphans are damaged goods, and that adoption could destroy a life," he is urging the studio to add a favorable adoption message at the end of theater-screened films and donate a portion of box office receipts to aid orphans.
We get their worries, but it's A MOVIE. It's not real-life.
P.S. Stop drawing attention to it if you don't want anyone to see it!!! Duh.
You're only helping them!
P.P.S We LOVE scary movies!

Did they make such a big deal out of the movie "problem child"?
Stop drawing attention to it — good advice. Prolly something you should have followed when you got your ass handed to you by will.i.am's manager
are they gonna start protesting and bitching against and forbidding everything nowadays? it's not George Orwell's 1984, douchebags!
this movie looks so fucking lame.
hahaha as soon as i saw the trailer i thought "oh, this is not good self-esteem building for adopted kids" haha but fuck it….i still can't go further than wading in the ocean because of Jaws. thanks Steven Speilberg…thanks a lot.
she looks like lourdes, madonna's girl lol
…there's no such thing as bad publicity. "Bless The Beasts and Children".
Eh. I can kind of see their point.
Does this group really think people waiting to adopt are that stupid?
that makes no sense! theres a bunch of evil orphan movies out there?!?!
whats so wrong with this one??
give me a fckn break adoption advocates should be more concerned with the amount of sexual and physical abuse that goes on in foster homes that is a cause to be involved in. not telling ppl that yet again they are to stupid to get that they are in a movie theatre and that the movie is just a movie.
Orphan a.k.a. The Omen IV…………yeah movies still aren't original anymore.
perez, stop commenting on things you know very little about. films are impressionable and though i don't condone censorship, i support adoption advocacy groups getting their message out. the issue for them is the KIDS that need loving homes. this movie is a threat to years of hard work in promoting healthy happy adoptions. it's like crap stereotypes against mother in laws, completely unjustified but now the common belief is ALL mother in laws are out to screw their kids' spouses. think about it. you're losing your smart edge, perez.
i can see where they are coming from…but its just a movie..and im sure most saine ppl arent going to make that big of a deal about it anyways….but, me not liking horror movies in the first place, i wont be going to see it anyways…and beside, horror movies now-a-days arent even scary….so whats the point..
Hello? Problem Child?
I would be more afraid of a red head.
Believe me, I don't the movie is going to scare people off of adoption. The only thing that scares people away is the price of the adoption itself. My husband and I are hardworking people who have looked into it, but can't go thru with getting a baby because it costs $30,000!
The adoption community needs to look at its own process before blaming outside sources for scaring people away!
Looks like they should have kept it a secret…
Perez, I wonder if you would feel the same way if the movie was about a gay child…
There will always be someone who is offended by something no matter what. Was this blog post posted by Barbara or Mario? Just wondering.
hahahaha are you serious!!!!!
That is correct Perez … It's just a movie . These protests don't go anywhere .
yes, because we see how scary movies brought down the camping industry…durrrrrr
its actually kind of a really good point- there really is a stereotype about orphans… i mean, they can't really block the movie.. but i understand why they are concerned.
…Jeff Medefind sounds like an uneducated a*shole. That's how he got his position.
Re: Auntee Flow – good one
Re: cafehead1 – I agree 110%. When I saw the trailer for this the other day, the whole group of friends that I were at the theater with made the same comments. Everything leaves an impression on people, consciously or unconsciously. Perez is a fool to believe otherwise. It's easier to say the public is smarter than that… but, honestly, after seeing Bruno, I think a vast majority of people are of their rockers stupid. If I helped adoption proceedings, I would be scared for this movie's repercussions as well!!!
Okay, just a thought….. if they're THAT afraid that potential adopters will be sooooo easily influenced by this movie…..what does that say about potential adopters?
Q: Do they really want such #$@^ing morons adopting?
Hmmmmm……You can't tell the difference between reality and movies but…..Hey, you're heterosexual so you must be okay!
I would be scared too if the girl I was adopting turned up in that hideous outfit.
I love how these groups assume that people are idiots who can't tell the difference between real-life and fiction. But you know what? Even if regular people stopped adopting, it wouldn't matter because Angelina Jolie will always be there to make sure that the adoption business never dies.
Ok people, its a MOVIE!!! If this movie convinces you in anyway to not adopt a child because of your fear for magical powers beyond your control, then you should not be adopting children in the first place!!
If someone is so fucking stupid that they will be scared away from adopting by this movie, then they have no business being parents.
That would scare the bejesus out of me too! NEVER know who's DNA those adopted kids come from - I know two offsprings of a psycho that the adoptive parents need to warn people about… Yah there are real life psycho kids out there. It's all genetic…. do a background check people!
"an estimated 129,000 children are in U.S. foster care system waiting to be adopted"
Bloody F$&*ing hell! Are you kidding me????? 129,000? That's all? Really? We can't find 129,000 suitable parents in the US? Jesus Christ! If you spent as much time doing your jobs as you do protesting, we wouldn't have orphans! And seriously….do you want the idiots that watch and believe this movie adopting anybody? Just how hard up are you??
That's why I won't adopt-I don't like the idea of a stranger in my house.
Hmmmm… I dont know?
When Bruno came out, all the backlash of "Gay Sterotyping" came out and I understood it. Now, this is coming out and I see there point, but at the same time I just feel there taking it way too seriously. It's a horror flick, nothing more… nothing less. I dont know… People need to chill.
How stupid . Sure is not going to be because of the movie … lol
We all know that Orphans are all possessed by evil spirits! the adoption community doesnt' want this info to get out! The movie will finally expose the truth!….LOL
uh, media reflects back to societal norms….duh. They are right to be concern, but yeah they should stop drawing attention.
Allejesus, I can't believe some of you people. Honestly! What about Rosemary's baby? Do you think people chose not to have babies because of that? How about the Omen? Did women start wondering if their boys were actually changelings that were the sons of Satan? (OK, I might have thought that about a couple of boys I've known, but not because of the movie…) ?And I agree with the comments - this might be a good test of prospective adoptive parents. Anyone trivial enough to allow a silly horror movie to affect their bedrock opinions about children shouldn't be allowed to have them!
Really? A Christian organization is protesting a movie? Big surprise. Funny how they're always whining about freedom of speech when it comes to Passion of the Christ, Narnia, and their right to believe freely and openly. But where's this support of the 1st Ammendment when anyone with a differing message wants the same rights?
Just thought I'd go ahead and share with y'all the email I sent to Warner Bros. a few weeks ago. I pick my battles when it comes to dealing with those who are ignorant about adoption and families that are formed by adoption (P. Hilton, you're in that group) however I felt this was worth speaking out about for the same of my now-nearly-grown children. Here's what I wrote:
*********************************************
There are at least a MILLION families in this country formed by adoption….and you dare to put something like this out, further spreading the already pervasive myths that adoption is somehow less desirable a way to form a family and that adoptive children have secrets and something wrong with them.
How dare you help spread this myth that is hurtful to my children?!!!
Here are some better ideas–why don't you make a movie about a black child who is inherently evil? Or a hispanic child? Or a gay one? Or a Jewish one? As long as you're demonstrating your bigotry toward adoptive families, why not extend it to embrace racism and homophobia as well?
Oh, because it wouldn't be appropriate?
Well guess what. This isn't either.
(I provided my read name and contact information in the original letter).
i can't wait to see this movie, it looks so good. People now a days will bitch about anything. everything is offensive to everyone, get over yourselves.
Re: Jir822 –
"Gay-stereotyping"????
1: I'm pretty sure America (and the rest of the world) already has a gay image image firmly implanted in their brain.
2: Any person going to see that film, knows in advance what it's all about.
3: I guarantee you, it will not give Neo-Nazi skinheads the "wrong idea" about gay men.
Bruno isn't intended to bridge any gaps.
if someone wants to adopt and they take this movie seriously, then they shouldn't be adopting in the first place.
they need to shut up, people are smarter than this
Isn't it funny - people are upset - you make fun of it - lighten up - don't talk about it. hmmmm….an excellent case of the pot calling the kettle black. Its so easy to judge folks from your ivory tower, isn't it? But look what happened when your mouth wrote a check your soft hands couldn't cash. Remember, mister sister, judge not lest thee be judged. Of course, then you would be out of a job given your particular skill set.
NOTE: Good for you, luckymom22!
I have known several people who've adopted and the results are a bit scary when the kid emulates the birth parents.
really?! By drawing attention saying it's "making adoption look bad" and that they're protesting, they're going to make it seem like it really is a bad thing or they want to hide something. Adoption is a great thing and I think that people are smart enough to know the difference between fact and fiction. The groups seem like they're just looking for a reason to protest and some publicity. redic.
I CAN'T FUCKING WAIT TO SEE THIS SHIT IT LOOKS WICKED COOL.
How about this, you have to be a complete dumbass to believe this movie. So nothing to worry, unless theres alot of dumbasses in this country, then theyre fucked for sure.
get over it, its a film, some people just love any reason to complain
I am a foster parent and believe me a lot of those kids that are up for adoption are really messed up.
There is no such thing as a perfect child to adopt. They are pissed off after being passed around the CPS system and when you finally get them they are going to make you pay for taking them away from their parents when it really wasn't you to begin with
CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THIS MOVIE AND BE THANKFUL THAT I USED A SURROGATE TO HAVE MY TWINS!
First off the couple is not childless, have they watched the preview ?
This is ridiculous! It's a movie people! I think its about a child who is possesed by something evil so its not really that the Child is actually evil per se. This is incredibly unrealistic! Get over it! people just need to stop taking things so seriosly!
LOUD GROAN!
were not fucking retards, we know the difference between a movie and real life.
you dumb fucks.
Re: Joshdukie – Hilarious! Good point… we've all been enlightened hallelujah!
I've seen the trailer and am looking forward to this movie! Aren't movies about suspending reality for a while and having a good time? People still trick or treat on Halloween despite there usually being at least one "Michael Myers" in full costume in their neighborhood; and pick one or many of the other horror series…I have two adopted cousins and don't feel a need for all the screaming meemies over a fictional little girl….
its a damn movie. they need to get over it.
Honestly I thought the same thing when the movie came out, I would be shit scared to adopt someone. But there has been many movies with the same plot, you adopt a kid and they turn out crazy. Protesting the movie is way out of proportion.
OH please. I hate scary movies cant watch….its just a movie…. non of this is reality, so…..
oh god its a movie!! and it looks scary as hell too lol
They should do it just like the did the Bad Seed! Now that was a demon child. It's always on TMC! Watched it 2 weeks ago. And something they did after the movie was introduce all the cast including the litttle demon. Which got a good spanking by the actress playing her mother. Yeah, that was a good movie. Kids can play evil really well. They should remember this is only a movie. But, also stating that to the public will help. The bad seed was made god knows when and trust my mom told me it was a lot of crap about that one. Oh Legend Gossip Writer Hedda Hopper son played the father. He also played on Perry Mason. William Hopper tall and blond. I'm going to see this picture the child (ha,ha) looks interesting.
my sister looked just like that little when she was little too, and she had no problem getting adopted people just take things way too serioiusly
the orphan in this movie is so fucking selfish. the family brings her into their home to take care of her but how does she repay them? by fucking killing them. what is her problem! might as well have just gotten a new one.
Looks frighteningly like a young Vicky Beckham, who is clearly evil personified! (just joking – she’s not nearly that interesting)
But seriously, the adoption groups and people like luckymom22 really need to get a grip. Adopting a child is a great thing and a huge commitment; I really doubt anyone even remotely prepared to undertake it is going to be dissuaded by a work of fiction, particularly one of such fantastic nature. These groups are just making themselves look rather silly and petty – if anything, their pedantic and neurotic tendencies are far more likely to put off potential adopters.
Fuel negative attitudes toward real life orphans? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. What about scary movies that have creepy kids? Are they fueling negative attitudes towards all little kids? These people clearly have nothing better to do.
ppl make to much about movies, my god sheesh!
-
its just a movie unless its credited with some truth to it
-
why make such a big deal over it. will just make more ppl have to see it . but then that isnt such a bad thing -muhuhuh-
Re: stomachacidmonke – Why just Christian adoption groups? I'm sure secular ones would have the same issues….
As an adopted person I am tired of the way aoptees are portrayed in the media. Adopted persons are often portrayed as being "defective" in some way for example; The Omen, Problem Child, The Royal Tennenbaums, Dexter, Orphan, Meet the Robinsons, Harper's Island…and the list goes on. Contrary to what Hollywood would have you believe we are just people like anyone else, living our lives and going about our business.
how is this movie for entertainment when you thought bruno was offensive? love ya perez but a little consistency would be nice.
IT'S A MOVIE!!!!! IF YOU BUY KIDS…YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GONNA GET!
Re: steelers – Yeah just like if you have kids - you never know what you're gonna get.
People are impressionable as how many out there have been influenced postively AND negatively by movies. The movie doesn't sway my opinion on adoption but as stated before if you're stupid enough to believe this movie could have some truth to it then you shouldn't adopt. I don't think the people who want to adopt are that stupid - the idiots that are that stupid are the ones uneducated in birth control, are having 'mistakes' and don't know how to be a parent.
true that Perez, i mean come on this is ridiculous.
Re: luckymom22 –
Dear Luckymom22,
Do you do any actual thinking before you "pick your battles", victimize your children and lump them in with Gays, Blacks and Jews??
How is this hurtful to them? They're already adopted! Presumably by loving parents. Are you afraid that all their friends will turn on them after viewing this movie? That society will ostracize them because of the ONE evil child portrayed in this movie? Give me a fucking break! How dare YOU? Comparing this with homophobia and racism!! In case anyone's forgotten… as a general rule of thumb, a good portion of the people out there looking to adopt can't have kids of their own. I'm quite certain a stupid, made-up horror movie about ONE evil, adopted child isn't going to turn them off to a life long commitment like starting a family. Do you have such little faith in your fellow human beings? You're so above everyone else that only you can see through the terrible lies this awful movie is spreading about orphans? Everyone else on the planet are a bunch of impressionable idiots that believe everything they see in a horror movie!
Now if this were about a whole orphanage of amoral, hateful, baneful dangerous licentiousness duplicitous
Errr, the "adoption community" really isn't banding together. The whole stupid thing is being driven by adoption agencies and industries who are oh so worried that their bottom line will be cut because stupid people may not want to purchase, oops I mean adopt kids. Then they send out mass mailings to adoptive parents who like to make themselves feel good by jumping on a bandwagon that does nothing to address real adoption issues.
Truth is, adoptees and birthmothers are laughing themselves silly over this movie. There was a group of adoptees who even made Esther fan t-shirts over this and I've heard of adoptee groups who are making plans to go see this opening night.
No banding together against a movie, just those who know the truth about adoption cracking up over how stupid adoptive parents are.
I doubt any of these religious zealots even know anything about the actual content of the film. Its a horror movie, not an "anti-adoption" film. Morons.
Why do all these organizations like this think the public is stupid?? Oh, right, cause 99% of us act that way! But anyway…did "The Bad Seed" turn Americans against cute little blond girls cause the one in the movie was evil?? I understand that it is hard to find parents who'll adopt a child who's past a certain age, but I doubt this movie will make or break anyone's decision process.
"We get their worries, but it's A MOVIE. It's not real-life."- you could say this about any film which people have worries about, people seem to forget that its entertainment not real life! Besides if someone isnt going to change their mind about adopting after watching this movie then maybe they shouldnt be adopting in the first place!!!!!….but i have seen the trailer and it looks terrifying!!!!!
If this is true, it's really sad. We have enough homeless children here in the United States that need parents.
Braaaaghhhhh.. This picture scares me so bad. I am NEVER watching this movie :O I closed my eyes when I saw the trailer at the movie theater!
I'm SOOO tired of people protesting every fckn thing that has come out the past 5 or so years. Movies can't just be movies anymore. There always has to be some whiny fck boohooing about how it's going to make something or other look bad. WHO CARES?!! Enjoy the damn movie!! Stop being pssies, and get over it.
What will Madonna and Angelina do in a few years when their adopted children attack them both with steak knives?
well…first i agree this is only a movie. but i will say this. there are many older children in the foster care system because most of the people looking to adopt kids are looking for babies. why???? because most of them understand that these older children have issues of abadonment, trust, anger, and most of all rejection. from being passed around from foster home to foster home.
so people choose to adopt from infantacy. it would be alot easier on some if they have a good foster care agency. none the less…i dont see the adoption system in the US or anywhere else in the world being hit hard by this movie. those that love children cannot be stopped. and that is the way it should be.
Their making a way to big of a deal
Um…hello! OMEN came out 20+ years ago…..didn't stop Madonna or Angelina now, did it????
omg…get over it! It's a friggin movie. I 'm going to see it!!!!!
Victoria Beckham…is that you? I didnt realise you were making movies again
Well, the little wife and I were planning to adopt until we got a look at this. EEEKKK! Now it's out of the question, and we will be advising every person we meet against adopting!
First of all my son is adopted and I am also an adoptee. (we were both adopted at birth) Initially I considered an oversees adoption because I thought it was too hard to adopt in the US. (so many horror stories about birthmothers taking money from the prospective adoptive parents and then deciding to keep the child. And there is no recourse for the adoptive parents who have spent the money) I read a lot of books about toddler adoption and adoption from overseas, particularly Eastern Europe. A lot of adoptive parents ended up with children with severe behavioral issues and children who would never love them. I decided I did not want to take that chance and luckily a situation basically landed in my lap and I got my beautiful son. Every child deserves a loving home, but I decided I wasn't up possible attachment disorders and other problems many older orphans have. God bless those who take this on.
They had to be christians….
Um…the couple has two kids in the movie.
then why do they make it so fucking hard to adopt children in the first place?! wtf are the kids doing if theyre not being adopted? living in foster homes. sounds much better than having a home & family…
It's just a movie…some people get too worked up about things.
Re: Stephlet –
Stephlet, your language tells me that we have little in common. You missed the point of my post. I could care less how this movie impacts potential adopting adults. Please see Jai's post. And yes, I pick my "battles" for the sake of my kiddos, although I can't actually say I'm in a "battle" about this; just that I thought it worth 10 minutes of my time to write Warner Bros., and now here, and speak up. It's worth my 10 minutes if it causes someone (not you, I mean someone who is capable of empathic, non-profane thinking) to give the matter some additional reflection and thought.
Re: kittykat13 –
Hi KittyKat,
I did choose international adoption because, unbelievably, I was not considered a good candidate for a domestic adoption because I was no longer in my 20s (ancient!) and single. Things have changed in the last decade so that if I were trying to adopt now, I would have a better chance of being able to adopt domestically, although it's now hard to imagine having any other children but mine. Like you, I was very nervous and read everything I could get my hands one about attachment issues, etc. My philosophy was to hope for the best and prepare for the worst. It hasn't been an easy ride, but overall it's been a joyful one. I know plenty of non-adoptive families who have had extreme difficulties with their birth children so there's no guarantee no matter how your family is formed.
The movie is just like other movies that came out before it. It reminds me of The Good Son. I think people need to chill. Grown ups know fact from fiction.
Why make an remake of the original when the original is so suburb. Bet they gonna fuck this up. "They" did it for instance with the "Ring" The japaneese version was sooo much better than the american version.
FFS advoates! It's a f^cking movie not a documentary!! Or do they think only STUPID people adopt kids???
What the fuck?!! The movie is going to suck anyways!!
some of uz already
have demonz in our
own famililezzzzzz….4/realz
hope thiz movie rokzzzzz
demonz r everywhere, u have
2..outsmart them…never be
afraid of them…thatz when they
get chaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa…ehheheheheh
Looks like the adoption community isn't "scared" at all. They're just trying to sponge off of what they feel will be a popular movie, and beg for a nod at the end to promote their business. Kind of like Perez Hilton sponging off this whole thing, to promote himself.
