Another Openly Gay Filmmaker Advises Gay Actors To Remain Closeted!!!

Not again!

We thought Outfest was about supporting out people making movies, but this year that is not the case.

Similar to a statement director Todd Holland gave last week, writer/director Don Roos has detailed the benefits of staying in the closet.

During another discussion at Outfest, the LGBT Los Angeles film festival, Roos felt that an actor's openness in their personal life may harm their career.

“I can’t cast Mel Gibson in a movie. Who could put Tom Cruise in a movie right now? When I see Tom Cruise, I think of Scientology, jumping on a sofa and getting into a fight with Brooke Shields,” said openly gay Roos of casting. “I prefer more mystery. I don’t want to know about [the actor’s] political views, whether they’re gay or straight.

He continued, “I have a deep respect for homophobia [in American society] and I don’t think it will ever go away. I don’t think actors coming out is going to help end homophobia. I think doctors, teachers and lawyers coming out will end homophobia.”

Deep respect for homophobia?!

Roos felt compelled to expand on his ideas of racism in America, saying, "We’re a country of bigots. I don’t want that to go away entirely. We wouldn’t be interesting anymore.

An openly gay male telling other gay individuals that bigotry has a place in America?!

The opposite of empowering!

Pure idiocy!!!

      wow

    2. 2

That IS open and mindful. He's an artist. THIS SITE is idiocy!

    3. 3

      He's right.

PEREZ — Adam Lambert's "openness" and your constan pictures of him in drag, DOES NOT HELP HIS CAREER ! Either does his mother opening up her mouth. People don't like butt-fucking, and that's apparently what a lot of them think about when somebody says "HI ! I'm gay, and I'm a singer/actor". Neil Patrick Harris NOTWITHSTANDING!

Perez - the world isn't gay. Gays tend to live in ghettos, like WeHo, and stay there for protection.

Adam Lambert's "new career" has already been hurt, I'm certain. And so will many others (including Neil Patrick Harris, despite his current hit show). And outing Dustin Black by showing him being butt-fucked, PEREZ, only serves to remind us that YOU'RE NOT REALLY SUCH A NICE GUY, MARIO ! NO ! NO ! NO! You should leave that stuff alone………….it's gross to see anyway, on a "Gossip Website". Times haven't changed that much, girlfriend.

    4. 4

      this site isnt idiocy!
open YOUR eyes m'dear if this site was so idiotic then why are you on it..
      or a member?!
      GO PEREZ
Todd Holland is such a douche bag. racism makes a country interesting?!
      WDF!

    5. 5

Good for him. Too many people place importance on actors, when it's the doctors, teachers, lawyers, construction workers, etc. who should really be admired.

    6. 6

he needn't worry - bigotry, racism and intolerance have always been cornerstones of most societies - hence, wars. that's not going away anytime soon or at least until man is extinct/

    7. 7

How does racism and homophobia make a country more interesting? What the actual HELLLLL?

    8. 8

Wow, that is disgusting. what a loser.

    9. 9

Homophobia is just ignorance. Shouldn't coming out be about the person that is coming out, not what the world thinks of them?

    10. 10

Re: Mystery Person – being pro gay marrige myself, I think you're very right..

    11. 11

homophobic! (not Perez). so what if stars are gay. if you have a problem with it thats just to bad! "deep respect for homophobia"

    12. 12

DOES THIS MEAN THE MICHEAL ANGARANO WILL NEVER COME OUT OF THE CLOSET ???

    13. 13

Re: mars in velvet – homophobe….

    14. 14

Re: Mystery Person – Also a pro-gay rights person here but I agree 100%. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Keep ringing the cash register under the guise of being a gay rights leader, Perez. Cant wait for YOUR unauthorized tell-all movie to appear in theaters.

Who would play Perez? Philip Seymour Hoffman totally.

    15. 15

stay in the closet where you have plenty of cloths to wear!

    16. 16

Get an education. Respecting something doesn't mean you agree with it. I respect the office of the President. I don't like Obama and as anyone who's read my comments can attest to, vehemently oppose him, but I respect him as our nation's leader, and as my husband's boss. It's called intelligence. I respect other people's opinions enough not to attack the person, but the viewpoint, unless of course they go on talking about moron this and that while lying. Then the insult actually applies based off info, not randomly spouting. I digress. I don't agree with the the KKK, Black Panthers, BET, NAACP, ACLU, and thousands of other groups… but I respect our country enough to respect their positions as basic rights guaranteed to us. And no, I don't mean those who kill or defend those who kill from those groups, I mean those who use voices of course. If it matters not, and gay is natural - then it shouldn't be announced like you're special or an exception.

    17. 17

Seriously, do not go see this guys movies! The point being good actors disappear in the role. Everytime you see Ian McKellen you do not think of him being gay you think of the roles he has played. That is the way it should be. He is judges by the value of his work not who he comes home to.

Don Roos statements remind me of the battered wife saying he only hits me because I deserved it. Honestly, we need more people beat to death just so America can be interesting. Get Help!

    18. 18

He's absolutely right! And if you got your head out of your ass for a minute and really paid attention to what he's saying, you'd agree. Someone's sexuality shouldn't matter in any way. Example: ADAM LAMBERT. People could've taken him serious as an artist, unfortunately PEREZ HILTON decided it was more important to post pics of him in drag and constantly try to FORCE him out of the closet.
It's not like he's saying that people should pretend to be straight, he's saying to not address it because it shouldn't be an issue, and until it's not an issue you will never get equality.

    19. 19

      Re: AlphaPanther – idiot ?

Re: mars in velvet – gays and bi's rule. bi pride♥

    21. 21

Mystery Person - You are just plain STUPID! "Gay people live in Ghettos" Did you really just type that. You moron we actually have the most dispossable income of all and you should research we are in all classes. I am a Marketing Consultant, I have tons of Lawyer friends, Doctor friends, Military friends All Gay and None live in the "ghetto". You should pick-up a book now and then. I would also bet you are not college educated and any diploma would probably be a streach! Dumb Ass!

    22. 22

It is one thing to claim people should consider keeping private aspects of their life private in order to keep up a carreer. It is not right, but it is one thing. But to somehow state that you respect homophobia? Do you also respect sexism? Racism? Do you respect classism and other forms of abuse against different groups of individuals? It is BEYOND idiotic and reprehensible. Simply because something is a fact of life does not mean it is worthy of respect or allowance. I accept there is racism, I do not for a single second respect it. The fact a man who should be working towards the assistance and support of other struggling gay actors is instead telling them to shut up and hide in the closet proves that homophobia isn't only apparent among the redneck heterosexual. Furthermore this idiot considers bigotry and ignorance as making our country more interesting?

Is it interesting when a gay man is found slain simply because he decided to kiss his boyfriend in public?

Is that interesting? Is it worthy of respect?

Truly disgusting. I do hope there is some form of ban on his movies. He obviously does not know how his words could effect a struggling gay starlet who now believes homophobia should be respected and he should remain a liar. Lying about something so primary to him.

    23. 23

When fucking people here in America will not be so scary or consern when someone is gay or straight…. big fucking deal. Are these people think they will sleep with everyone they met in their lives? So Get over that stupid attitude and move on with you lives !

    24. 24

Perez…. As if you know anything about empowering… Shut up about gays issues, you're only making things worst for everybody…

    25. 25

Well he has a point. If society doesn't like an actor because his views they won't support their career (watch their movies). I don't watch movies Tom Cruise is in for example even though I used to like him because all I can think about is what a douche he is. Same concept for a gay person. The majority of the population believe it or not do NOT support the gay community so obviously by that reasoning the movie wouldn't be as successful. That's what he's trying to point out. I don't think he's homophobic.

    26. 26

Koolcat5, mystery person didnt mean the ghetto in the literal sense. he meant the GAY ghetto. places such as west hollywood or the castro in san fransisco. u just made yourself sound very stupid and uneducated by not understanding what he was referring too. what kind of gay person has never heard of the gay ghetto. idiot.

    27. 27

I completely understand why he is saying actors might be better off staying in the closet. I am gay, and there is no way in hell I would be out of the closet if I was an actor. No possible way. Anyone who says that doing that won't reduce potential roles has no idea what they are talking about. You can get on your soapbox all you want about saying public figures should be out, but the fact of the matter is that many producers and directors will not cast openly gay actors in starring roles. That's just a fact of life.

    28. 28

No, he is just being realistic. The gay community thinks that they can push their agenda down everybody's throats. But some people disagree and will always disagree. And people in this country have the right to agree or disagree…that is what makes it America.

    29. 29

you shouldn't need to say your sexual preference AT ALL.
it should not matter, the fact that the media (you) and people make a deal about peoples sexuality and plaster it all over the magazines and websites causes it to be a big deal, for no reason, you bring prejudice on.

If you didn't share your sexuality there wouldnt be a problem. There isnt a problem if you want to but understand my point.
I mean, how would people react if people were to walk about going "Hi im straight"
There arent straight marches, if there were there would be outrage! whats the point in making such a deal about sexuality.

be who you are, you dont need to share it with the world.

    30. 30

I personally applaud any person of diversity… but IT DOESN'T MATTER if you are gay, straight, transgendered, white, black, brown, yellow, pacific islander, republican, democrate, liberal… PEOPLE ARE JUST PEOPLE… When you learn to see beyond frivilous labels you will understand. THE INSIDE IS WHAT COUNTS!!! FUCK LABELS! FUCK EXPECTATIONS! Be yourself and fuck me too! Don't listen! Be yourself!

    31. 31

These people are in the public eye. Its how they make their money. Stating that their gay is possibly closing many doors for their careers. Why would they do that to their lives? They'll come out when they feel most comfortable and when there life is going in the right way. Perez, you have no career honestly. You can be gay and make rants and no one will stop you. But thats not how Hollywood works.

Why are you the only "famous" gay person trying to out everyone? If you aren't, apologies but I would like to know who else is doing this because this is almost absurd.

    32. 32

He is giving his view and opinion on a topics something that you prentend to do about 36 times a day. Are you ever going to learn that just because someone's opinion or view differes from yours they are not necessarily an idiot? It's ironic becuse I agree with you on a few things and I still know you are a fool.

    33. 33

what are his movies, so I can make sure never, ever to go and support them.

    34. Low says – reply to this

      34

Well, he is wrong saying bigotry has a place in America. That is a horrible statement. I do agree that it is OK for actors to stay in the closet. They are actors.. It's their job to be different characters and keep people guessing. What would people have thought is they knew Marlon Brando and Cary Grant slept with each other? I'm sure many are and should be OK with it but they are actors and you need to believe them when they are in love with a woman on screen. I don't think it's right to "force" actors out. It's their job to keep poeple quessing and make you believe their character.

      ..

    35. 35

He is right. Without it, you would have nothing to bitch about. Unless of course someone else bitch slaps you.

Re: imsoregistered – You respect the KKK? Wtf? Do you also respect Nazis and terrorists?

“I can’t cast Mel Gibson in a movie. Who could put Tom Cruise in a movie right now? When I see Tom Cruise, I think of Scientology, jumping on a sofa and getting into a fight with Brooke Shields,” said openly gay Roos of casting. “I prefer more mystery. I don’t want to know about [the actor’s] political views, whether they’re gay or straight.”

He does have a point. While I would not dislike someone merely because they're gay, I admit that I lose interest in a celeb if too much personal info is revealed about them and I find then that I don't like them. It does harm your career if you get a negative reputation and anything might give you that negative reputation.

    40. 40

Cont'd: I don't like people when I find I don't agree with their morals or if they come off like a jerk in reality and then I find I don't care about their music or want to watch them in films because I can't put aside my personal dislike for them enough to just enjoy the music or movie. Whether you like it or not, that's the way it is. Celebs' careers would last longer if they kept their private life *private* and their opinions to themselves. Tom Cruise is the perfect example of that. Look how quickly his career tanked when he started giving his personal opinions and sharing stuff about his personal life and he turned out to be a weirdo that people decided they didn't like. Once something is out there you can't take it back, make it be unheard or unseen. When you're in the limelight you have to be really, really careful what you say or do if you want to stay there.

    41. 41

God.. So murder and molestation keeps a country interesting..? Dick head

    42. 42

"We’re a country of bigots. I don’t want that to go away entirely. We wouldn’t be interesting anymore.”
To the writer of this quote—I wonder when I read this if it means that you are so attached to your own bigotry that you will allow others to degrade/disrespect you if it means you get to keep on degrading/disrespecting others? And…We wouldn't be interesting anymore? What does that mean? So, that's what you think makes America interesting is bigotry? With all the beautiful passionate art, relationships, idiosyncrasies, friendships, humor, etc., etc., you are going to say that people's UNWILLINGNESS to set aside their fear and open their hearts is what makes the world interesting? I'll tell you what's interesting to me—the little 2 year old boy who ran up to me today and grinned and then ran back to his parents…my free spirit friend and I playing in the gorgeous smelling Arizona rain, laying down in puddles so we could touch the earth…my friend Wendy from Phoenix who is one of the most welcoming people I've ever met, watching people meet her and seeing how comfortable they feel around her because she walks with a universal acceptance of others. LOVE, KINDNESS AND OPENNESS ARE NEVER BORING ONCE TRULY EMBRACED, EXPLORED AND EXPERIENCED.

    43. 43

He's probably just saying that for the publicity after he saw all the attention the other dude got.

    44. 44

The whole down low thing is fed by these idiots…

    47. 47

The thing that makes America great is you can hate anyone you want for any reason what so ever. God bless America

    48. 48

he has a point. mika doesnt discuss his sexuality, nor do the jonasty brothers

    49. 49

no hes smart. if adam lambert tried to get a role in disney versus robert pattinson, who would they hire? exactly. celebrities shouldnt state their political views or sexualitys because some directors are homophobic and then they wouldnt get the role

    50. 50

    51. 51

If there were no bigotry in America, you'd have no career, because you'd have nothing to complain about. How lucky is it that in America you can become famous just by bitching? You have no talent for anything, no exceptional intelligence. But because you doodle on your little photos and say mean things, you're a star.

    52. 52

the one thing i will agree on is there is no need to know someones political views, sexual orientation etc….i don't go around professing my liberal ideologies at work because i'm at WORK. you're there to work and bringing in your personal life is unnecessary.

    53. 53

I agree with what he was saying about an actor not broadcasting his personal life, it's true that you can easily be typecast and end up playing the same kind of roles all the time especially if you come out too early in your career.

However, that 'deep respect for homophobia' stuff is utter bullshit. I can only assume what he meant was that he respects peoples rights to hold whatever views they like on homosexuality but worded it awkwardly, since it really isn't the same thing. I hope he makes a statement clarifying his position on it all, I don't want to assume he's a dick if he jut

    54. 54

    55. 55

Bigotry=ignorance!!! So this guy is saying that without ignorance we'd be a less interesting country? No, we'd be a much smarter and progressive one!

    56. 56

Is there not one person on this site that has enough brains in their head to understand what he meant by the word "respect"!? He is not saying he respects "homophobia" as in "I admire it", he is saying he respects it's power in our society. The way you would say you "respect" the power of a hurricane or lightning. It doesn't mean you like it, but you understand what power it holds so that you can be wary of it. Sheesh, get a clue people!

    57. 57

He's right, being openly gay will kill an A-lister's career. If you don't realize that Perez, then you are downright dumb. Saying that he has "respect" for something doesn't imply that he supports it, it simply means that he realizes it exists and will probably always exist to some extent. Go about your life being openly gay, let others make that decision for themselves…because it is their decision, not yours.

    58. 58

As opposed to calling all single male celebrities gay and "publicly closeted"? Keep talking out of your ass P.

    59. 59

to be honest if i was a gay man and an a-list actor i probably wouldnt come out because you work so much in america and a lot of them are prejudice against pretty much anyone whos not a majority

    60. 60

I think it is hysterical that this director is being ridiculed for suggesting that people may not want to reveal their whole truths to protect their careers by a man (sort of) who's WHOLE career is based on lies. Starting with a fake name, stolen quotes, lies and photos taken from other people's work, right down to doctored photos of himself with fake hair colours, he is no-one to judge others on their realities!
