Abuse in a family is a complicated thing. I found through experience that everyone in the family has a different memory of what happened. My parents believe they were kind and loving. My brothers don't remember being chased into a corner and beaten; they think my parents were great. I was the only one in my family who had those memories. It seems like things make a lasting impression only on a very sensitive person (like Michael) and for everyone else, everything was rosy.

The thing is that Michael have said that his father was a genious and that he has forgiven him. I also do think that if it wasnt for Joe, MJ and his siblings wouldnt be so succesful.. Joe did discipline those kids hard (maybe too hard) so that they would become the greatest…, please do NOT misunderstand me. Im not defending him being abusive and would never do that. And Joe is right when he says that back then parents did hit their kids, it was common. However, that him, according to MJ, neglected him emotional but not showing any love is very very sad.

Perez, thanks for posting this. I'm so glad to see the conversation shift from Michael's alleged drug use to the child abuse he suffered. If Michael was addicted to drugs, it was because of the child abuse he suffered from this man. Many people can get medication for 3rd degree burns and not become addicted. But when your father beats you with a belt to the point of puking, any escape, especially a prescription escape, probably feels better than sobriety. Some wounds, especially emotional ones are almost impossible to heal when the abuser continues to deny it. You are correct Perez when you say "violence is never the answer", except when it comes to what actually killed Michael Jackson.

Watch "The Jacksons: An American Dream", which runs about 7 times weekly minimum on VH1. Produced by one of the Jackson brothers (I believe Jermaine), and I'm pretty sure the parents had a hand in making it as well. Great film (if it's true) gives awesome insight into Michael & the family in general. He's creepy & jealous he never made HIS dream come true.

I am heartbroken for Michael and his childhood as I watch and listen to his father openly deny abusing his son. Having been abused myself, I know what it does to you as you grow up and to have someone deny that it even happened is just pouring salt onto the wounds. I was lucky in that respect - my abuser has never denied it and has since apologized for the abuse - and I am so saddened that Michael was never afforded the same respect from his abuser. His whole life breaks my heart and I pray that he is happy and at peace up in Heaven…Good bless you, Michael and let's hope that his mother keeps Michael's three beautiful children away from Joe Jackson.

Teachers went directly to the parents - a child had NO ONE to go to. There was NO ACCESS to the media or the police - no one talked about child abuse. It was a silent, ugly secret. Don't judge the Jackson children for being silent unless YOU were raised in the 60's.
No one really knows what went on behind closed doors. He may just believe he was using corporal punishment, so he thinks it was justified. I wasn't there, so I can't say for sure what happened.
