"Rock the Boat for Autism

Our mission:
We will row two seventeen foot Van Duyne Surf Boats nearly 1,500 miles - from Boca Raton, FL to Sea Isle City, NJ - between June 13 and August 1 in order to raise money for autism awareness and research. In fact, we want to raise $250,000 for the Autism Society of America. Why do we have such an ambitious goal? Because we are commited to helping those affected by autism."

This is a great charity to be involved with. I work with teenagers and young adults with autism and with all the budget cuts in all the states, these charities are so important. Please become involved!

"autism awareness" — what does that mean? raise money to print posters and magnets and t-shirts. hooey. Many people are aware of autism. And which research? The kind to "prevent" it or "cure" it or which? Hasn't the ASA gotten a lot of money and awareness as a result of McCarthy (gawd), Flutie, Els, Stallone (oops, forgot, he doesn't give a shit about his son), Iverson, Robinson, Braxton and all the other "celeb" parents?

I'm leery of these fund raisers. Autism is a devastating thing (I know many people with it, and I live with one too) but….I don't know.

    I do like rowing though.

    YAY!!! I love you perez!!!!

no i don't like this at all. 50 years ago autism was unheard of. they keep making up diseases to find excuses for what's wrong with people. the truth is, nothing is wrong with people. some people just have personality quirks. i'm not even sure autism exists.

Re: hannahsays – Fuck you. Thats bullshit.

Great cause! I always support things of this nature. God bless every one of those children.

Re: hannahsays – Obviously, you have never been around someone who has autism. It is not just a personality "quirk". When a child is smiling and happy and perfectly normal one day, and then over the course of a few days or weeks, they stop talking completely, and seem to no longer notice that anyone else is even in the world with them, that is not a "personality quirk". It's not something that comes and goes, like a temper tantrum. It is permanent. 24 hours a day, for the rest of their lives. When a child cannot speak, and all they can do is sit on the floor and rock and stare off into space, that is not a quirk. There is something WRONG with them. Fifty years ago, they simply called these children "retarded" or "insane" and they stuck them in asylums or institutions until they ended up dying. People tucked them away and IGNORED them. That is why you didn't hear about autism 50 years ago. It's because doctors could not see the images of their brains, and they could not see that there was clearly something neurologically wrong with them. They aren't quirky. They aren't insane. They are trapped inside their own minds, and we just have to find a way to help them out.

Quirky? Ahh that's the answer. Every one of those kids who can't talk, can't interact appropriately, vomit at the sight of food, go into a 13 hour meltdown because they can't express themselves, has no sense of strangers or can even recognise their parents are just quirky! Great!
Just goes to show that fundraisers like this ARE needed. So many people, hannahsays included, do need to be made aware of autism.

Row row row ur boat gently down the stream merrily merrily merrily merrily life is but a dream- it's a good cause :) just hope whatever money gets raised goes to research.not towards someones quick scheme of making money off of autism.

  19. 19

Re: hannahsays – MAYBE YOU WOULDN'T BE SAYING THAT IF YOU KNEW HOW HARD IT WAS TO LIVE WITH SOMEONE WITH AUTISM. IT'S NOT A QUIRK, IT'S A DISABILITY. IT'S HARD NOT KNOWING WHAT MY BROTHER IS THINKING!

I hope none of this money goes to that wack job Jenny McCarthy.
