French President Nicolas Sarkozy Collapses While Jogging
French President Nicolas Sarkozy collapsed Sunday afternoon as the result of a "minor lipotropic epsidode" while jogging near Versailles in the balmy 84 degree heat. His people chalked up the collapse to general fatigue and strenuous exercise in the heat. Sarkozy apparently never lost consciousness but spent the night in the hospital for observation.
On advice from doctors following the collapse, a Tuesday trip to western France's Mont Saint-Michel was cancelled, according to the Elysee Palace.
Fortunately, Sarkozy's summer vacation was set to begin later this week, so it seems he'll just rest up a few days earlier than planned.
The Frenchie was seen shaking hands with hospital staff as he left this morning with his wife, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy. He seemed in good health at his departure time but made no statement to the press waiting eagerly at the Val de Grace hospital entrance.
Presidential health is a touchy subject in France - Presidents Georges Pompidou and François Mitterrand both hid very serious cancer problems from the public for months until their illnesses became apparent on their own. As a result, Sarkozy has vowed to keep the French people informed on his health, and so far, his health has always been in good condition (with the exception of a sore throat back in 2007), and seems to take good care of himself, routinely jogging or cycling.
We're glad to hear he was released with no serious diagnosis. It's great to exercise but make sure you're taking care of yourself! Stay hydrated in this summer heat and if it's too hot, don't push yourself!!

I vaguely remember that owner of a running magazine who dropped dead in his early forties after his regular run. It turned out that his bloodstream was so low on potassium that his heart just stopped beating. A couple of bananas or oranges and the guy probably would have been alive today.
