Extreme Home Makeover Is Too Much Work For The Blokes In Britain
Ty Pennington took his top-rated makeover show across the waters to Great Britain recently to film a special edition of the show called Ty's Great British Adventure.
Catchy.
When he got there, he soon learned that he wouldn't have the motivated team he is to used in the States. In fact, when he arrived in the English seaside town of Portreath to revamp an abandoned park, he found his workers more of a challenge than the task itself. He says: "The British are so polite, they are afraid of ruffling each other's feathers. They had to take the time to discuss it properly. That was one of the biggest challenges — to get everyone to agree on what we were going to do and then convincing them they could do it."
Ty supposedly wasn't a big hit with the people of the small town either as he tried to push them to finish the project within their limited 1 week schedule. We can imagine how he went over, with all the screaming and the megaphone, with the timid, simple people of the town.
Perhaps they thought that he was going to come and do the work for them. Ha!

Ty Pennington and Extreme Home Makeover were recently in our town. The show is a total FARCE! TOTAL! Ty is only in town 2 days: the first day to tell the family, then the last day to "move that bus". Ty does NO WORK on these projects. None. In fact, the designers that are on the show do very little work either. Local people do all the labor and designs for the room. I was on set and can tell you that without our community, the house wouldn't have been finished. Sure, it takes a community to finish these projects, but don't be fooled: What you see on TV is far from reality.

Unlike the USA where any schmuck with a hammer can drive a nail — In the UK, construction workers must be individually certified. There are trucks that drive around to construction sites to do testing when necessary. The thing that was annoying Ty was planning and craftsmanship! We should have that here!
I'm not sure what you mean by "recently" but I saw the episode you are discussing about a year ago. I do love watching Extreme Makeover, but not because of the "design team" but because of the beautiful houses they create. When I watched the "Great British Adventure" programme, Ty couldn't get the help he was hoping for simply due to the fact that the majority of the locals either had small children to look after, or were elderly folk living in a seaside village. Plus, like many people have mentioned before, in Britain planning permission and adequate safety checks have to be made. No razz-ma-tazz, screaming American people doing what they want.

Ty gave up the frickin' megaphone last season, thank god. The show is not as annoying as it was. I hate to admit it but I cry EVERY time I watch that show. I watch it in reruns.
I'm an American living in the UK and I can tell you I am not surprised by this at all. The work ethic in the US far exceeds that of the UK. People here are really, amazingly, lazy, and as Emz said, they can't be bothered. I'm sure they're not stupid or "simple", but I guarantee you, once it hits 5:00pm, that is it. They don't want to work. Everything, with the exception of pubs (surprise, surprise) shut down at 5 on the dot almost everywhere in this country. Yes, Ty is brash and a bit too much, but at least he's too much trying to do something for underprivileged people and communities. It's pathetic the Brits couldn't pull up their knickers and just work a bit harder.

Re: yoshijmc – Everywhere closes at 5pm on the dot… where the hell are you living - on an island? we have 24hr supermarkets and those that don't do 24 hours usually close round about 10-11pm… The high street shops in London are open until 8pm also saturday and sunday most workmen start at between 7:30 - 8:00 in the morning until 5pm by then they've done a full days work… I've had workmen that refuse tea if you offer as they just want to get on with the job also those that do take tea drink it in about 10-15 minutes.. lunch breaks are 30 minutes and they usually eat on site …really what more do you want..If you don't like it - you know what to do… fuck off home…..

You would also expected to be living with your parents..

European people like to think more and longer about stuff (and love to be lazy) before they do it so everything takes a bit longer but most of the times the result is better and nicer. There is just less result
Our houses and cars are way better for example. They are smaller and more expensive but for a good reason. You guys just put a mega engine in a car to make it fast easily (i love those btw), we puzzle a bit longer to make a small engine even faster (and cleaner).
We in Europe can use a bit of that American power mentality cuz shit usually takes way too long over here, but the Americans can also use some of our quality mentality.

I dont watch the show but happened to stumble on the episode where he comes to the house of a couple who adopted children with special needs and it sadly just so happens the father is dying of cancer and is desperate for his family's home to rebuilt to address the needs of the kids before he dies. The team/community turned that house into such a special place and Ty went to the hospital where the father was to show his support as the dad too sick to see all the changes…it was healtfelt and sincere and it seemed everyone put in 150% for the family.
The Brits are good peeps Perez…you may want to take back that statement…this coming from a 'polite' canadian…hehe
Erm that show was on TV here (England) about a year ago?! Hardly new news, and I'm not really sure what Ty was expecting.
We build most of our structures from bricks and mortar unlike American homes (that isn't to say that wooden homes aren't good, it's just that brick homes take longer and are more suited to our climate) and we have all sorts of red tape like planning permission and health and safety to contend with so even if you own the land outright you can't just build what you like on it. But these things take time…
And it's not that people don't want to help - we had a show called Challenge Anneka on TV for years where she was challenged to perform random acts of kindness, like building a hovercraft station in Burham-On-Sea in 72 hours, and she didn't have a huge budget she had to convince everyone to do it for free!
As far as I can remember she didn't have a loud haler and got the job done by being cheeky and polite!
