Judiciary Committee Approves Sotomayor Confirmation

Judge Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to the US Supreme Court will be voted on by the full US Senate as dictated by the Senate Judiciary Committee, which voted Tuesday to approve her nomination.
She was chosen by Obama to replace retiring Justice David Souter.
If confirmed, she will be the first Hispanic person to serve on the Supreme Court.
Politics are heavily at play, with Republicans divided between placation and the growing Hispanic vote, and citing Sotomayor's stance on gun control as their reason to vote against her.
The National Rifle Association has announced its opposition to Sotomayor and, expectedly, so have the Americans United for Life.

This woman frightens me. Did anyone look at the firemen case in Connecticut? The one where the exams for a promotion were thrown out because not enough minorities did well. Reverse discrimination is racist, and her views on that case really worry me. It's like we're handicapping minorities with having to promote a certain amount of minorities or admit a certain amount to colleges because of sensitivity. Why is your race still even on college and job applications? We can't move forward if we continue to behave like this.

Democrats BLOCKED Harvard-educated lawyer Miguel Estrada from an appellate court judgeship BECAUSE he was Hispanic. This was stated in Democratic staff memos that became public. They didn't want Republicans to get credit for putting a strong Latino judge on the bench and possibly on the path to the Supreme Court.
