Tanning Beds Are As Dangerous As Arsenic!

Tanning salon enthusiasts, listen up!

The Associated Press is reporting that cancer experts have reassessed the danger of tanning beds and the results are not good. They are likening the cancer risk from tanning beds to arsenic and mustard gas.

Yikes!!

Fake baking now joins tobacco, hepatitis B, and chimney sweeping on the list of known causes of cancer.

A new analysis of about 20 studies makes clear that the risk of skin cancer jumps a whopping 75% when people start using tanning beds before age 30

And, while scientists had previously thought that only one type of ultraviolet radiation was lethal, not so, as it turns out: in studies, all types of ultraviolet radiation caused scary mutations in mice, confirming that all ultraviolet radiation are carcinogens. UV radiation is used in tanning beds and is now known to cause skin and eye cancer.

Eye cancer?!  Super scary.

What's more, as use of tanning beds has increased over the years in people under 30, and a recent study in Britain shows that melanoma (the deadliest skin cancer of all), which historically is most prevalent in people over 75,  is now the leading cancer diagnosed in women in their 20s.

Holy shitballs! This is seriously scary.

Stay out of the tanning beds, bbs!  Cancer is not something to mess with.

And just as a friendly reminder from the American Cancer Association - remember that all types of ultraviolet exposure can lead to cancer, so wear sunscreen when you hit the beaches, too!

      hehehe……chimmney sweeping! lol

    2. 2

The irony just cracks me up!

    3. 3

My bf was diagnosed with skin cancer, melonoma, earlier this year. It was horrible to go through and he is the youngest person I ever knew to get cancer…in the end we narrowed it down to tanning beds, 100% for sure…they are poison, which makes me sad b/c I love having a tan, but clearly this isn't the way to get one!! Be careful out there, and with global warming occuring and affecting us everyday, perhaps we need to bring pale and pastey back as 'hot'…

    4. 4

      Orange paint

      duh!

no shit, Sherlock! Anyone with half a brain knows that a lot of sunbed sessions are not good for your skin!

    7. 7

Freaking geniuses….didn' t see that coming?

    8. 8

Only light complexion People have to worry!

    9. 9

Re: kitkat2 – Sorry about your boyfriend. I hope he'll be completely all right.

    10. 10

I feel like this isn't that extreme though… like everyone did know this right??

    11. 11

Yikes! Thank goodness I don't tan.

    12. 12

Thank god I was born naturally tan. And I tan easily therfore eliminating the need of a tanning bed. I think the fake tan look is bad, being naturaly light skinned isn't necessarily a bad thing. I think people look good in their own skin, not the product of a tanning bed. If you're that desperate to look tan there's always spray tanning.

    13. 13

Oh please! It doesn't take an effin' scientist to figure this one out. My first clue was when a friend spent 20 minutes in a tanning bed and 'glowed' orange for days after. Unless you are eating a bunch of carrots.
(cue the Magic School Bus episode where Arnold turns orange after eating too many 'seaweedies')

    14. 14

      wow.
i guess 4/5's of my school are going to die from cancer then…

    15. 15

thank god i dont fake bake

    16. 16

[re=4126403]Rea: PLEZZZ[d/re] Wrong!! Dark people have to use sunscreen too. Cancer rates are high in black people because they wrongly believe that they can't possibly get skin cancer. Tan beds are ridiculous anyway, just use a self-tanner!!

    17. 17

Know what works REALLY good? Jergens sunless tanning lotion. I swear by it. I have a beautiful fake (SAFE) tan and I'm always getting compliments on it!

    18. 18

wow, if you didn't already consider this you're a fucking idiot.

stay away from the bulbs stupids girls…and boys

    20. 20

I never got why people want to get so tanned, that they look orange! i nice goldish tan is all good and fine, but when it begins too look leathery, why keep going? can someone please explain this to me?

    21. 21

Re: LadyLa – I have the same thing! I agree, Jergens self tanning lotion is great, it looks so natural, not fake orange. I started using it because so many magazines, like Harpers Bazaar, Elle and Allure mentioned it being their favorite. And I also have at home Dior Bronze, Clarins and Chanel self-tanning lotions, but I use Jergens! It's sold in a supermarket and it's so cheap.

    22. 22

I agree that tanning beds are dangerous and can lead to skin cancer, but saying that it's as dangerous as arsenic is a bit extreme. Arsenic makes you sick right away, and the symptoms get bad fast. Skin cancer takes a while get you as sick as you would from arsenic, and arsenic will make you sick while only some get skin cancer from tanning beds. They're both horrific and wouldn't wish either of those on my enemies, but to say it's the same is extreme.

    23. 23

nothing new. but people don't listennn

    24. 24

To all the tanning bed dumb asses the world is better without so tan away. Anyways have we not already heard about this like ten years ago.

    25. 25

Darwinism at it's best. Survival of the fittest I say… most of the chicks and dicks who use them are empty airheads anyway who think darker skin on white people = pretty. So NOT true. Let 'em die.

    26. 26

      holy shitballz is right!
i used a tanning bed maybe a couple times a month for two months but now that i read this im scared shitless… im just going to stick to jergens :P hah

FAKE N BAKE FOR LIFE BABY

    27. 27

As I watch my 38 year old husband, and father of my three children age 8, 4, and 2 battle stage 4 malignant melanoma, I am thrilled that the news about the danger of tanning beds is being circulated. What makes this most upsetting is that melanoma has the HIGHEST cancer death rate in women aged 20-25. This is no joke, and neither is the sun. I get my tan the way every fair-skinned, Irish girl should; from a BOTTLE.

    28. 28

You people who just LOVE tans need to stop and think about what a tan really is. It's your fucking IMMUNE system trying to SAVE your skin… your immune system steps in if it doesn't like something… if something is not safe for you. The suns rays, like anything in this world, is only okay in moderation. Seriously.

    29. 29

      Re: Yvette:]

But don't think you're exempt from skin cancer though. People who tan easily and those with naturally dark skin also get skin cancer. I'm not trying to sound bitchy… just be aware.

    30. 30

      Re: LadyLa
Yeah… until the FDA finally steps in and admits that the chemicals used in that shit is JUST as bad for you. Yeah, kids… let's go out and stain our skin in the name of beauty. Dumbass.

    31. 31

      Re: bhnath19

Serious question about your husband, and I'm so sorry to hear this… it's very devastating needless to say… did your husband have an obvious mole he let go for awhile? How large was it. I'm just curiuos… I go to the derm sometimes twice a year because I have tons of damage from not putting enough protection on during those naive younger years. But when I was young they didn't have all the knowledge they do now. Same with your husband. And men, my god, the in cases of m. m. amongst men is growing because they don't tend to scrutinize their bodies the way women do. Nor do they get yearly checks at a derm as much as they should. So sad, prayers your way.

    32. 32

and this is a surprise to who exactly

    33. 33

      Nothing new perez..nothing new.

    34. 34

      Re: PLEZZZ
NOT TRUE! everyone is at risk to sickness from sun expose. Some less than others, but everyone should wear sunblock 365.

      Re: fly a kite

WHO DO YOU SEE IN THE PICTURE BUDDY?

    36. 36

      Holy shit! That's terrifying!

    38. 38

      Re: NoVAgal

      WHO GOES TO TANNING SALONS?

    39. 39

Well, there is a huge shock. Mhmm. Gee, who would have thought COOKING your skin would be bad?

I've never understood WHY anyone would want their skin to take on the color and texture of a basketball, anyways.

    40. 40

The one on the farthest right looks just like Lindsay Lohan.

    41. 41

seriously people, being pale is just as beautiful as being tan!!!!!!!

    42. 42

it can't be as bad as smoking so i don't know why everyone is freaking out. i don't smoke but i do tan and don't plan on quitting just b/c of this.

    43. 43

Re: bhnath19 – I'm so sorry to hear about your husband. I hope he'll be cured. God bless your husband, you and your 3 little ones.

    44. 44

      "holy shitballs" ahaa
seriously, people just need to accept the fact that THEY ARE WHITE.

    45. 45

      fuck,
I just got out of the tanning bed :(

kitkat2, I hope your bf is alright..

    46. 46

Re: MileyCyrusLooksLikeAChipmunk – Yes, he did have a mole that began to change. Major ironic plot twist? He was in med school when it surfaced. We have been together half of our lives — 19 years. I noticed the mole changing and urged him to get to the doc to be checked out. They removed it, and he did a year on interferon treatment, and was cancer free for nearly 6 years. Then on May 26 we got the news. That was 3 days after he had run a 10K race without knowing he had a huge mass in his lung. On two levels, I hope this story sheds some light to those young ones out there. Please, PLEASE do not take your health for granted, and if you choose not to use sunscreen yourself, at the very least, slap it on those you love.

    47. 47

Yay, so happy that I've always had a fear of those tanning beds! Now this just supports my cause

    50. 50

Re: miss ash – …the point of that statement is that exposure to arsenic causes cancer…as does exposure to uv radiation. do some research.

    51. 51

Take a lesson from the Vampires. Pale = hot.

    52. 52

Re: always_classy – How is it not worse than smoking? Smokers die from cancer towards their 50s, not in their 20s.

    53. 53

My dad was an avid tanning bed user and I lose him to melanoma two years ago. Trust me, that tanned look is just not worth losing your life for. Use sun protection when you are outdoors and never, ever use a tanning bed. They are killers.

    54. 54

      Cancer..it's everywhere…
You can get it from anything…
I remeber reading a study about house cleaners and some of the ingrediants can lead to cancer…the polluted air can give us cancer…even the everyday jobs can give you cancers( Tar roofers, fire fighters etc…)…
We all have cancers cells, its just takes that "one time" or that "one thing" that sets it off.

    55. 55

Re: PLEZZZ – Actually everyone has to worry about skin cancer. I work on peoples skin everyday and I have seen skin cancer on all skin types!!!

    56. 56

Re: MileyCyrusLooksLikeAChipmunk – That's true.. makeups and all that stuff is not FDA approved so who knows what is actually being absorbed into the skin with any of that stuff.

    57. 57

Re: always_classy – same here, don't smoke but i do tan and im not stopping over this, its my only vice. comparing tanning beds to arsenic is extreme too.

    58. 58

I always look like the biggest dork at the beach. I wear a huge sun hat and a long-sleeved shirt all the time I'm there. And I've got a hot body that I'd love to show off but it's not worth the consequences. I look around and can't believe no one else covers up, don't they know how dangerous UV rays are -that they cause SKIN CANCER!? My friends are lying there for hours, purposely damaging their skin! They use tanning beds! I think if I went tanning I would end up lying there picturing my cells mutating as the UV rays shine down. Bring back parasols and fashionably white summer skin, it'd be better for everyone.

    59. 59

even though tanning beds cause a lot of cases of skin cancer, lets not forget about other precautions. if you're going to be outside for more than 10 minutes wear sunscreen! people who have jobs working outside are at risk. people forget to wear sunscreen, something as simple as riding in a convertible is a time when you need to wear sunscreen.

this sucks:( i guess pasty is the way to go

    62. 62

I'm sure everyone knew the risks, but probably didn't think it was THAT bad.
      Pretty scary.
I'm glad I have a natural tannish look to my skin so I don't have to worry about trying to darken up.. not like I really would anyway even if I was ghost white.

    63. 63

mario, you can go on ahead and keep fake-tanning. we want YOU to be the proof that this is real. and hey, if you do get cancer along the way, just remember that you did so much with your life….(hint: sarcasm was used)

    64. 64

      Re: miss ash
Wrong!! Melanoma frequently kills within a few months of being diagnosed. I know firsthand how quickly melanoma kills in many cases. Yes, tanning beds ARE lethal because the subsequent melanoma is a killer.

    65. 65

      Re: bhnath19
I'm so sorry about your husband and I hope he successfully beats back "the beast". I too am a fair skinned Irish girl and after watching my dad fight and ultimately lose his battle with melanoma I avoid the sun and get my tan from a bottle. Best wishes to your husband. Never give up and stay strong!

    66. 66

      They Look Wierd

    67. 67

screw tanning anyway. it's expensive if you go to a bed and time consuming if you do it naturally. besides white people who are unnaturally tan look like porn stars… and if that's what you want be my guest… but it makes you look superficial and stupid. so unless you're born with it don't even bother.

    68. 68

Thanks for using our Picture Perez! lol.. But we are ALL actually spray tanned here, no one uses the tanning beds!

    69. 69

      Re: kitkat2
      Sorry to hear kitkat2.

    70. 70

why did you use this pic anyways? LOL

    71. 71

JUST SO YOU KNOW WE ARE ALL SPRAY TANNED IN THE PIC ABOVE. ITS FROM THIS PAST WEEKEND! NO ONE USES TANNING BEDS!

    72. 72

thats not gonna stop me from tanning.

    73. 73

my sister passed away from melanoma and i havent been in a tanning bed since. people don't realize how bad it is for you..plus when you get older you will be so wrinkley! people need to take this more seriously

    74. 74

      sunset tan rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    75. 75

All skin types and races should use skin protection. Everyone is outside and the UV rays will get you. Babies and young children need it the most. But, anyone can get skin cancer. To the young lady who husband has it. Prayers and hope he gets better.

    76. 76

What kind of idiot doesn't already know this? Of course tanning beds are going to increase your risk of getting cancer it uses UV rays ffs which are KNOWN to cause cancer. If you wanna be orange that badly just use fake tan, it looks just as stupid anyway.

    77. 77

This is one of the reasons for why I like my night job. I'm up all night and I sleep through the hottest part of the day and being that I'm fair skinned this works out great. Melanoma is no joke. So for all you bitches that trash us fair skinned individuals just remember that adding white to something always makes it prettier and we will age better than you raisin brand lunatics.

    78. 78

Be careful out there, and with global warming occuring and affecting us everyday, perhaps we need to bring pale and pastey back as 'hot'… Re: kitkat2

Both Kentucky and Michigan are experiencing the coolest and wettest summers on record, this year. You actually buy into that propaganda/excuse for excessive taxation and earnings confiscation.

    79. 79

it can't be as bad as smoking so i don't know why everyone is freaking out. i don't smoke but i do tan and don't plan on quitting just b/c of this. Re: always_classy

Just so long as the taxpayer doesn't have to pay for your healthcare then tan away as the world can always use one less fool.

    80. 80

I used to tan all the time, but getting cancer is not worth it!! I would rather be a little bit pale then bald and at risk of death

    81. 81

WHO DIDNT KNOW THIS ALREADY? JESUS…DID ANYONE NOT THINK THEY WERE DANGEROUS?

    82. 82

That's the main reason i quit tanning a while ago, I rather be as pale as my avatar or Dita, and embrace it with jet black hair and dramatic make up… instead of orange with leather skin as Donatella..

    83. 83

Tanning beds are the worst thing to ever happen to me! I only tanned 3-5 minutes 3 times a week for 2 and a half months. and I have stage IV melanoma it has spread to my lungs liver and bones. I just want everyone to take this seriously! I am 26 and have 2 small children and have been married 7 years and Im not expected to make it to Christmas! PLEASE wear sunscreen everytime your going to be in the sun!

    84. 84

      wow…i'm fucked

    85. 85

I agree, people just don't listen!! If you must tan, go fake. Honestly, stop burning your skin for the sake of looking 'good'.

    86. 86

Guys, just go out in the sun…..Stop bein lazy.

    87. 87

Re: AshPashZ – My heart aches for you all. Are you getting treatment? Where? I am all too familiar with this (see my earlier posts) Prayers to you all

      88

Why can they embrace their natural color. People always want to be something they are not! LOL

    89. 89

I had a small mole on my ass at 23 that was diagnosed as being pre-cancerous after tanning in a salon I worked at a couple times a week for a couple of years. The dermatologist made such a large incision around it, to remove everything, I have a white circular scar the size of a quarter on my butt now. I blame the tanning bed. It gave me melasma too. I know this because it went away when I stopped using them. They age you, they're dangerous, they suck, I really think if you feel that better tan you're safer going to the beach with sunscreen. But I'd rather live white, than die looking like a dried up had been Miss Hawaiin (Leather) Tropic.

    90. 90

Re: Colette – hehe. Very good. Yes. this is good. Don't die for a tan ppl. So many have. It is so sad. We come in all colors and we are either hot or not. Getting a tan isn't gonna change that is it?

    91. 91

Re: NickyTaylor – Thanks for telling every1. So we all know if any of us feel like we NEED a tan there is an alternative.

      92

Like this comes as a shock, health professionals have been saying this for years.

    93. 93

Derms have been saying this for decades, hopefully these new studies are conclusive enough for it to finally become conventional wisdom.

    94. 94

Everybody please, please, please stay out of tanning beds. I lost my closest and dearest friend to melanoma when he was 28. While he was fighting his cancer they kept cutting larger and larger pieces of his forehead away; he went from a healthy 220 lbs. to a sickly 140 lbs (on his 6'2" body). It's just not worth the risk - stay out of the sun and stay away from tanning beds!

    95. 95

      Re: star_brite
Yes, because tanning in the sun won't give you cancer. Are you for real?

    96. 96

you get cancer of everything nowadays.
I don't give a fuck about that. I don't get my tan in a saloon but if you want that you can go in the sun and get cancer too. I don't see a difference. I know a gazillion smokers who don't die of lung cancer but a lot of non-smokers(here in my town) who die of lung cancer. I think it can hit everybody.

    97. 97

      Paleness FTW.

    98. 98

I can say that at the age of 22 I was diagnosed with Melinoma and it was the scariest moment of my life lucky they caught it early enough where I just had to have a large amount of skin cut out but I tell everyone STOP tanning I started when i was 14 and now being 23 I cant even sit in the sun its not worth it!

    99. 99

my dad was just diagnosed with melanoma and i have skin lupus. i started tanning when i was 18 and didn't stop till 39, 21 yrs of tanning beds, so this is not good news, please pray for my family

    100. 100

Media reports comparing indoor tanning to toxins like mustard gas, cigarettes, and arsenic are outra-geously overhyped. The same “group 1” category includes red wine, salted fish, and regular sunlight—so these sensational headlines are as absurd as saying “A glass of merlot is as deadly as mustard gas.”

Because tanning beds produce the same UV light as the sun, OVEREXPOSURE and abuse of our product—just like OVEREXPOSURE to sunlight—is associated with an increased risk for some types of skin cancer. Other items in this category are red wine and salted fish. Scientific studies suggest that drinking red wine or other alcoholic beverages carries a greater cancer risk than tanning. It is completely irresponsible to compare indoor tanning with mustard gas or arsenic as so many media reports today have done.

Don’t fall for the same old media scare tactics.
