She recently said that she had a breakdown last summer after someone graffiti'd the word "SLUT" on the outside wall of her house in London. She went on to say, "I was not able to leave the house and was living in a state of fear, when I'm really a fearless person."

I am in no way comparing the severity of a hate crime to this more innocuous vandalism but words have meaning that stretches far beyond the material with which they are written. Any time someone violates your home with hateful words - whether its in high school and someone defaces your locker, or your home - it's scary and makes you feel vulnerable. A neighbor of mine had swastikas painted on her garage, and I know the whole neighborhood was mortified and everyone felt violated. It's just unnecessary to deface property like that - no matter how much you dislike someone. Nobody deserves it.
