Perez, I'm surprised that you would list the Candie's Foundation as "a worthy cause." While I can definitely support abstinence education as one aspect of safe sex education, the Candie's Foundation has a more conservative, abstinence-only message. Bristol Palin is one of its spokespeople, and in her media appearances that I have seen, her words strike me as terribly muzzled and under-nuanced, most likely at the behest of the Foundation's PR team and her conservative family. Her words about teen pregnancy and sex since becoming a spokesperson for this organization contrast markedly with those she spoke before taking on this position, as when she said (on national television) something to the effect that expecting teens to remain abstinent is "unrealistic." Aren't there other programs that promote more healthy, holistic *and* realistic views of teenage sexuality?

AiriMiri is right Perez. Why are you promoting this abstinence group?
I guess its good that you can take the high road, when most religions have condemed gays as freaks who go to hell, you a gay man, can still stand up for these same groups in their efforts to sexually marginalize hetro kids too.
When Candie's foundation has a PSA by Carrie Prejeanm can you promote it as a worthwile cause as well?

Kids- if you don't want to get pregnant, let them finish on your face.

Right, let's start to preach abstinence again for teenagers, why don't you?! Just after Obama said this wasn't very realistic as a demand for NGO's working in Africa for getting financial support from PEPFAR, you want to bring it back to the US? This isn't right and yes, there surely are better and more down to earth organisations around.

Too bad abstinence-only programs are so ineffective. This is Bush-era thinking, and havn't we already learned what a waste of time and money all of that was? We are not talking teen pregnancy only, but AIDS prevention, which has proved that "abstinence-only" programs are not addressing the real problem… Teens have sex, and you have to educate them on all the risks and why, not this "promise-Keeper" shit.

Yeah right. Cause abstinence is a sure fire way to prevent kids from having sex and getting pregnant. How about something a long the lines of “I’m sexy enough to make you put a condom on because I’m worth it.”

I'm proud of you for spotlighting a point of view that you may not neccessarily share. This, is not an evil organization, its just trying to deal with a problem. Things usually get done more effectively when you have groups working at the problem from ALL angles. Kudos Perez!

i love this post, i dont know why people are being so mean. no one is perfect and even parents make mistakes but that doesnt mean they can't encourage thier children not to make them too. And abstinence is realistic, cuz i wasnt sexually active until the age of 20 and i believe its possible for anyone to wait if they have they right attitude and the right information. kudos to candies for trying to do something about teen pregnancy cuz its so sad these girls ruin thier lives like that.

It completely unrealistic to expect any teen to be "abstinent". Get a grip on reality and start preaching about birth control.
