"The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a 501(c)(3) organization, has been at the forefront of a wide range of suicide prevention initiatives in 2009 — each designed to reduce loss of life from suicide. We are investing in groundbreaking research, new educational campaigns, innovative demonstration projects and critical policy work. And we are expanding our assistance to people whose lives have been affected by suicide, reaching out to offer support and offering opportunities to become involved in prevention.

We are increasing the number of community-based chapters, now at 32, with two-dozen more in development. And we have a growing list of friends and supporters leading a grassroots constituency that can advocate for the policies and legislation at the state and federal levels to advance suicide prevention.

With a suicide attempt estimated to occur every minute of every day in the United States and over 32,000 lives lost each year, the importance of AFSP's mission has never been greater, nor our work more urgent."

Perez- Thanks for posting this, this topic is usually a conversation stopper and does not generate the warm fuzzy that other non-profits get to benefit from. My brother committed suicide and have found meaning in helping to prevent others and their families from going on the journey our family has endured. I also would like to ask you if you could please give a shout out to the Loving Outreach to Suicide Survivors in Chicago, without this group many families would be lost. Website is catholiccharities.net/loss Thanks again Perez..much love!

My Dad killed himself almost 2 years ago, by gunshot. He was in poor health but not dying, the compounding factor was depression. I can speak from the heart and say that it is a more painful way to lose a loved one. The grief is different. Depression can be lifted in so many ways, please reach out for help!!! I can say this, no one expects you to be perfect in this life, and you are already more loved then you can ever know. Every life is precious, you are a precious soul with so much to give. Don't give up, reach out for help and take it one little step at a time. You are NOT alone and it WILL get better. Don't give up. You are a child of God.

Thank you Perez for bring attention to this cause. I am actually walking for this cause in September in memory of my brother. I had just graduated out of high school when my brother killed himself back in 2001. Very unexpected and changed my family. Its said that every 16 minutes someone commits suicide. So every 17 minutes there are friends and family left to cope with a sudden loss.

For the ignorant people out there… Your rude comments just show that you have never gone through such a tragedy… Yes suicide is seen as a selfish act but who are you to judge other peoples actions. I was angry the first two years following my brothers suicide because I felt the same way. He left two kids behind as well as his entire family and he didn't think about that in his moment of weakness. Regardless no one should be so rude. You are mocking someones family or friend. One day the tables will turn and you will be forced to see what we have to cope with as family and friends of someone that committed suicide.

Do you even realize that several of these people are Military Veterans??? Have some respect!!!

I think that it is beyond awesome that you have posted this cause on your website!! I walked in Chicago this year along with thousands of other people in memory of my 17 year old cousin…it was an experience that I will NEVER forget!! Suicide is a topic that is not given much attention to but now even Perez is making a difference!! THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!
