Ashley Olsen Was Born Fashionable?
Ashley Olsen is on the cover of Marie Claire's September issue, and in it she discusses her and sister, Mary-Kate's, innate fashion sense.
Says Ashely, "I think you're either born with a sense of style or you're not. Either you care or you don't."
Somehow we doubt that if she hadn't grown up famous, she'd be rocking the edgy styles she does today. Or even be able to afford them.
The "actress"-turned-designer goes on to say that:
"When we were going to NYU, I think that was the first time we were aware of the power of our personal style. Not the power of it, but the result…. Between the big sunglasses and Starbucks cup and big sweaters, the hobo-chic thing, we were more shocked than anything…. Mary-Kate and I are very aware of trends and style, but at the end of the day, we don't even think twice about it. It's just 'What do I feel like wearing today, and how do I want to put it together?"
How mature sounding. And she seals the deal by saying:
"The amount of beautiful things we've ruined - not having the patience for a tailor and cutting everything ourselves…My sister once took an Alaia dress of mine and just cut the whole thing, and then was like, 'I cut it too short.' Mary-Kate and I don't think about fashion as these clean, beautiful objects. We just kind of wear it and live in it."
We shed a tear for that Alaia dress.

Two of the most successful designers in the biz right now. She is absolutely right. If anything, she is IN touch with reality. Most people don't take everything to the tailor. They do it themselves and mess it up quite often. Whether you like them or not, many designers' lines have been, admittedly, influenced by MK and Ashley. Maybe they should have donated their ruined dress to you, Perez. You could wear it on your fat ankels or something.

Agreed. Even though I do love these girls and regularly applaud their fashion choices… I thought this interview was a bit comical. It's one thing to realize that your style is seen and reviewed in magazines and on blogs, and is thus trendsetting… but I would think twice before publicly admitting your lack of appreciation and respect for what was likely a $3000+ dress. Most women will never come close to owning something that MK hastily took scissors to.

In a word, No. Her comments reak of ignorance and privledge. Perhaps if she had stayed at NYU and received an education and a real life experience for 4 years, then she might speak with a bit more intelligence and poise. One can be born with a natural artistic talent and certainly apply that to fashion design but "born with a natural sense of style" please. Does anyone remember the tween Ashley and Mary Kate in a little show called Two of a Kind. They looked like every other teenager on the block on and off that show.
I don't fault her for wanting a career in fashion but to project an attidue akin to The Lagerfeld and then talk about cutting up thousand dollar dresses because they were too impatient. Considering their budget, one would think they could afford an in house tailor, no? Enough with the celebrity cum designers and if you must take a lesson from Ms. Beckham; she has a cute line of clothing that she's passionate about but she certianly doesn't run around talking about how she was born with so much style, like it's a genetic privledge and she's a former Spice Girl and FOL (friend of The Lagerfeld). I have yet to see anything to come from Ashley or Mark Kate, in performance or in fashion, that I enjoyed as much as Spice World.

Yeah…it must be nice to have millions of dollars to buy all of those expensive clothes to "just kind of wear it and live in it". There's a difference between being born with style and being born with millions of dollars to BUY your style. I'm a design student and I'm broke and believe be, THAT'S when you know you either have style or you don't…when you have no money.

i would love to see how all of the people, who think the olsen twins don't have style, dress. i agree with her. sure, you can grow to love something as you get older, but some people do just have an innate ability when it comes to art and fashion, just how some people are just natural better at math and science than others. also, both the row, and elizabeth and james have awesome fall collections and by next year that style will trickle down and you'll all be buying it at forever 21!
