Eunice Kennedy Shriver passed away early on Tuesday morning after a series of strokes at Cape Cod Hospital in Massachusetts.
Sister of President John F. Kennedy and Sen. Robert Kennedy, the Democratic legend is credited with helping change society's perceptions of the mentally disabled and founding the Special Olympics.
In 1984, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her work with children and her programs aimed at preventing teenage pregnancy and substance abuse.
"She set out to change the world and to change us, and she did that and more. She founded the movement that became Special Olympics, the largest movement for acceptance and inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities in the history of the world," said a statement given by her family. "Her work transformed the lives of hundreds of millions of people across the globe, and they in turn are her living legacy."
Eunice Kennedy Shriver was 88 years old.
She will be greatly missed.

What a giver. There are few people on this earth that can make the world stop on its axis and change it for the better. Mrs. Kennedy Shriver has indeed left her permanent footprint and will be here til the end of days. She was greatly respected and will be dearly missed. Thank You for your unselfishness and all your long years of hard work.

I didn't realize that it was a kennedy that started the special olympics. intriguing family. It sounds like she lived a full worthwhile life. a lot of us don't!! lol
"She will be greatly missed" say Perez Hilton. He undoubtedly hadn't the slightest idea who she was. She wasn't cheap or 19…so she will not be missed by him.

She experienced a lot of sorrow in her life but managed to triumph over adversity. She helped so many of the less fortunate and will never be forgotten!

Re: hissycat – That's a pretty racist generalization. My mom was very old, white, and didn't have a wrinkle on her face. I know a black dude who is very old and kind, but looks like a shar pei puppy. It's basically mostly genetics, but the comment about excessive sun exposure is also correct.
Eunice Shriver helped thousands upon thousands of special olympian to feel good about who they were. There's a really special place for her in any afterlife.
Despite her long life it's still so very sad. Condolences to her family.
