Disney Gets Rights To Anne Frank Story, Iconic Scribe David Mamet To Write

We think this is a little dark for an animated classic, so hopefully the Mouse steers clear of it.
Disney has recently acquired film rights to The Diary of Anne Frank. The new version is slated to be written and directed by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Mamet. David, who is already writing the script, will be looking at the original diary along with the Broadway play in order to bring "his own original take on the material that could re-frame the story as a young girl’s rite of passage."
So, we guess they won't be discussing the part where she dies in an internment camp?
We think an exceptional rendition of Anne Frank's story is definitely needed, we're just not sure Disney is the one to handle it.
What do U think?

wow.. hollywood never quits. they just cant make enough money from telling the story of the deaths of millions of people.
good job hollywood and i hope you all burn in hell for exploiting the most horrible tradegy in human history.
As a child who learned about the holocaust at a very young age,
I do and dont think that this is the best idea.
I was terrified after i heard the stories,
but then again it was educational.
I think disney shouldnt be showing this movie,
but make a made for tv movie
bc its not as if they can show Anne going to a concentration camp,
So im indecisive
Re: Teach123ABC –
Yikes, yeah, i was considering being a Kindergarten teacher
they are so fuckin cute! aaahh!! haha
how is it? is it more of a mommy job or is it fun?
I would like to see a movie that doesn't stop at the arrest on Aug. 4, 1944. So much happened to Anne in the Dutch camps and at Belsen. Her spirit continued to triumph even as she lived through all the Nazi horrors. In spite of everything, she truly believed that people were good at heart…
I hope they Disney-fy the ending!
I highly doubt that this would be a typical "Disney" movie anyway. And as for keeping our children innocent, I read her diary for the first time when I was in third grade. My father took me to the library, checked it out for me, and explained to me that I was old enough to understand what I was about to read and that I needed to learn about what happened in the Holocaust, and to Anne herself. I think there are a lot more things we should be concerned about exposing our children to than something that actually is a part of history.
Keep in mind, too, that Anne was 13 when she started writing her diary, and she was 15 when she died at Bergen-Belsen. It's not like we're trying to adapt the story of a 30-year-old here. Why not have Disney, a household name that also owns many other huge production companies like Miramax, retell her story in the way she herself would have lived it? In my opinion, there's no one better to make a movie about the life of a child than Disney.
"In spite of everything, I still believe people are really good at heart." - Anne Frank, July 15, 1944.
Re: Siouxsie Michele Bale – It is fun,and yes the maternal instincts have to be there haha. A lot of funny things that you think to yourself "why?" like kids fighting over being "line leader" but its fun, and they really do grow from Sept to June
oh no no i love disney but this is 2 dark for disney jesus christ i bet u it gonna be anything about it its gonna be a whole different story
It's one thing for Disney to work with fairytales… it's another when the material is a diary. Namely, the Diary of Anne Frank…
they managed to handle 'The Boy in the striped pyjamas' in a sensible, non smaltzy way, so I'm sure this will be fine. They have a whole division for this kind of film that isn't related to the cartoon side.
Re: jenn96 – that wasn't disney - it is a good film though (my little dd watches it all the time and isn;t disturbed by it)
Also - all primary children here (UK) learn about Anne Frank, so it would be a good learning tool for them (like Boy in the striped pyjamas is for year 7 kids)
The history of Anne Frank should never be forgotten - I think teens ought to know how lucky they are, life isn't just like High School Musical for some people.
I can totally see Abigail Breslin playing this part… she's a strong little actress that could carry off the part of Anne Frank and give it the respect it deserves.
Is it going to be animated or not? But I think it is a bit of a weird choice :\ And I agree…I think Disney should probably back out of this one, a tad too dark for them
idk her…who is she?
WOW, doesn'r sound like Disney? But blessings
I read her diary as a kid.
It made me so depressed, and so depressed at human life.
How can one human being treat another human being with no respect?
It's not for me to judge, people have been killing other human beings since the beginning of time. I think it's in human DNA.
This is why we need the death penalty in every state.
Stupid liberals would let Hilter live.
Disney is going to completely destroy the story of Anne Frank. It's not a happy go lucky, rainbows appear at the end of the story, lets all break out into song at random times, type of movie that Disney makes. It's about the Holocaust, it's dark and doesn't have a happy ending. And if they get one of those crummy Disney stars to play Anne Frank, they are stupid and will destroy the meaning of Anne Frank for many people.
I dont think Disney should do this. They will eff it up and try to make it happy. This is not the type of story Disney should be messing with!
Wasn't there proof Walt Disney was anti-Semitic?
I did a report on Anne Frank and David Mamet. And I read teh Diaries and so a play on it! SO I hope they keep the Disney stars away. I do like some, but others I wouldn't mind if they fell off a clif
Dear god, what next? Don't we have enough harping upon WW2? What about a movie about a child blasted into dust during Hiroshima? Or the Rowanda Genocide? Or the Genocide in Armenia? Let's start educating our children on ALL wars not just WW1 and 2 - there's a lot more that has gone and is still going on than those two! Open eyes and minds. I see one more movie about the "evil Germans" I'm going to puke. How about a movie about how the people of Germany suffered? And why they were FORCED into being a part of the Nazis or watch their family be tortured to death. Or the mass starvation and illness the people suffered from? Lets start telling that side of the story!!
Disney is taking one hell of a huge gamble on this. they screw this up it's gonna come back and bite them in the ASS !
Re: PunkJesster – there have been films about those things, like hotel rwanda. and by the way, hitler was austrian
this is just..wow…Disney shouldnt be making a film like this. Disney is for kids and The Diary of Anne Frank is just not something that kids should become knowledgeable of at such a young age.
FIRST OF ALL SHE DID NOT DIE IN AN INTERNMENT CAMP SHE DIED IN A CONCENTRATION CAMP AND SECONDLY THEIR "BUENA VISTA" division made The Diary of Anne Frank string Hannah Taylor Gordon and that version is the most accurate movie on Anne Frank yet. Disney will do a good job
Anne Frank did not die in an internment camp and she did not die in Auschwitz and she was not gassed. I don’t know why people leave comments like this when they don’t know what they are talking about. Do some research! Anne Frank was sent to Westerbork a transit camp, then Auschwitz and then she and Margot- her sister- were sent to Bergen-Belsen- a concentration camp- where they died of Typhus, starvation and malnutrition!
I dunno, Disney did well with "Remember the Titans" so maybe they'll do a good job with this. I don't think they should make it animated though; hopefully they'll use real people. AS LONG AS SLUTTY FUCKING CYRUS ISN'T PLAYING ANNE FRANK it'll be a good movie.
Also, why shouldn't children know the story and life of Anne Frank?! It is important for people of all ages to understand this so they can grow up seeing and understanding the dangers of prejudice. After all, children of all ages WITNESSED the horrors of the Holocasue- and Anne Frank was a child after all, so I think children and teens can see a movie about it .
Re: PaLady – See "Anne Frank" staring Hannah Taylor Goslar- really good
Although commemorating someone who went through this is good. This is a horrible idea, especially considering Disney himself was a Nazi
There already is a great film version of the diary. The original! A while back there was a made for TV movie which went beyond the diary and into the internment camps. I liked that the original stopped where the diary stopped, when Anne and her family were discovered and arrested. The play is also well written, and when done well can be very inspiring. Hopefully Disney will can the idea.
they should pick someone jewish but not so jewish. u know? i hope they find someone children can look up too. and please no jonas brothers.
I hope this movie is up to par historically with Disney's portrayal of Pocahontas and Grand Duchess Anastasia. That way, they can show Anne Frank saving the Titanic and the Hindenberg before going to Scandinavia to thwart the Lebensborn project.
Walt Disney presents: Vanessa Hudgens as Anne Frank and Zac Efron as Peter van Pels!
"A story of repression, and the fight for survival.. with musical elements. And tap-dancing."
Please please please don't cast Miley Cyrus!!
uhhh…this is not a fairy tale!
