Ok, once again I feel a need to defend my home state of Utah. YES Utah does have one of the strictest constitutional amendments banning gay marriage. YES Utah's majority population does not support gay marriage, as evidenced by the passage of the state constitutional amendment banning marriage and civil unions of same sex couples. HOWEVER - that majority is not as overwhelming as many people seem to think. Statistically is counts as a majority, but not 100% of the state! Utah is also home to a fast growing number of individuals that AVIDLY support same sex marriage, such as myself, and perhaps a surprise to many of you, has an ever increasing number of homosexuals living in the state. I have read census reports comparing the ever growing gay population in Salt Lake City to San Francisco. So please note that this article is about a tiny little newspaper in Southern Utah - not about the entire population of Utah. So icky, icky poo to the newspaper, not Utah.

It's actually a lie, their policy wasn't to run weddings only legal under Utah Law. If that was the case, they would have never accepted the money in the first place. They are just saying that now as an excuse. If they are going to be bigots they should at least have the balls to defend their bigorty and not wuss out by making up stupid lies about it.

Actually, this is just one newspaper in one town, not the entire state of Utah, but being who you are, you can't make that work in your head. You'd rather bash a whole state full of people. Secondly, threre are laws in Utah that you may not like. Tough shit, there's a lot of laws that a lot of us don't like, but you know what? We deal with them and follow them because they are the LAW. If this newpaper editor decides that he does not want to publish the announcement, tough shit. Until you own the newspaper there's not a damn thing you can do about it except complain, and frankly, we're all tired of hearing you whine like a little bitch when things don't go your way.
What is really sad is that Utah claims to be a religious place, if this is how such a place behaves, od help Heaven ..these "good people" need to grow up and allow all people to live there lives

Once again, I hope to somehow educate a few of you about Utah. UTAH DOES NOT ALLOW MULTIPLE MARRIAGES!!!!!!!!! Since prior to becoming a state in the 1800's, polygamy has been outlawed in Utah. Members of the FLDS church and other similar churches that practice polygamy do so either illegally or by only being legally married to one wife at a time, usually the newest wife. Also, 14 year olds can no longer legally marry in Utah. The minimum age is 16 and requires guardian consent - just like most other states. Also, to educate you all just a little bit more, the main FLDS compound is not even in Utah - IT'S IN ARIZONA! Polygamy is not the norm or accepted in society in my state. So please get your facts right! Again, I personally absolutely support same sex marriage. So please allow me, a Utah resident born and raised, to prove Utah is not filled with what you consider discriminatory haters!

Listen up-while I don't care for the conservative nature of the state, it is not EVERYONE in the state. There is a large, and growing number of people here that are not the traditional conservative Utahn. There is a large number of gays, democrats (SL Mayor is a Dem, in fact), liberal people here. And while I still receive a bashing for being a "tree hugging, liberal-obama-loving, poor excuse for a mother (this was said to me because I suggested instead of killing a bear to move it to a reserve far away, and make it not able to get out), I still stand up for what I believe. How would it be if I judged EVERY gay on your behavior, Mr "Hilton"? By you saying Utah sucks because of this, makes you no better than Utah for saying ALL gays are the biggest threat to America (a Chris Buttars comment). Not all of us suck here, and not all of us like having the entire state bashed because of a select few organizations. Have you even ever been here? I dare you to, and I dare you to go into Salt Lake (downtown), you won't stand out, you won't be kicked out of the state. But you would rather hide and bash people over and over-people who don't deserve it.

I'm sure that some time in the past there were occasions when there were people who were "offended" to see minorities being granted equal rights and it was wrong then too! I'm not gay but if I were I would want others to allow me to live my life my way, even if they didn't understand my difference. I'd still want them to be tolerant. Re: SWEETPIECE! – The paper's decision was stupid and I completely disagree with their ideology, but they do have a right to refuse to run it.
Perhaps I'm the only one who sees the humor in what happened, but for anyone who doesn't know much about Utah, the Salt Lake Tribune is read throughout the state, including St. George. So by refusing to run this ad, the Spectrum's publisher will most likely have ended up "offending" more members of the public (including many of his own readers) than he would have if he'd run the ad himself.
As for blaming the entire state of Utah, that's a little bit unfair to do. You can't apply the actions of a few people to an entire state. Not everybody there agrees with prohibition against gay marriage, after all. (Incidentally, besides the people who live in Utah who have commented here, how many people reading this have actually BEEN to Utah?)

Re: knowitall – I actually read the article, I've been to Utah many times (two of the best nat'l parks in the U.S. are there), and we have several converts in my family.
The LDS Church may own a lot of land there, but so do many other people, including the US government. That does make the entire state LDS. In fact, in Salt Lake City, the LDS community is merely a sizable minority. Aside from that, not all Mormons are anti-gay. Didn't you read that both of the gentlemen were raised Mormon? My Mormon friends who consider homosexuality a sin would never subject them to any of the vitriol that you have shown toward Mormons in your reply to me, especially since their belief is to hate the sin while still loving the sinner.
All I can say about your post is that I'm amazed at your hypocrisy and your lack of introspection.
