Golf As An Olympic Sport?!
It may be the most boring game to watch, but people sure do love it!
During a bid to reach the executive committee of the Olympic program, Tiger Woods vowed that if golf became an Olympic sport, he would play in 2016.
That was enough to get advertisers and golf aficionados' panties in a twist because it looks like after another meeting in October, it may become a reality.
Golf has proposed a 72-hole stroke-play competition for men and women, with 60 players in each field, including the world's top 15 players.
Countries outside of the U.S. are pushing for golf to become part of the games because some governments only fund Olympic sports.
"I've said there is no singular decision or singular program that can globalize the game of golf like a nod from the IOC to join the Olympic Games," PGA of America CEO Joe Steranka said. "We still have Oct. 9 to look forward to, but we're very encouraged by today and we're proud of the support we've received."
Many view the game as an elite sport, so they feel it is essential to become part of the athletic community.
"You look at the Olympics last year, and you see Michael Phelps is going for the gold medal and LeBron James is there watching him and all of the basketball players," said Irish player Rory McIlroy. "It would be great to be part of a team like that."

Yes absolutely it should become an Olympic sport. It takes tremendous skill and while most everyone can play, it takes incredible athleticism to compete at the highest levels. Plus, Tiger Woods is built like a minor Greek God, so there's that.

It is rarely a boring sport to watch on TV (at least it isn't when Tiger is playing.) Tennis or Baseball on the other hand? Yawn.

When I play golf I feel it is merely a game, but I don't play it like Tiger, and I can see how it can be a sport for people who are more serious than me about it.

it definitely should. think of how many weird sports that no one has even heard of (and if they have, they don't care about them) are olympic sports! golf is really popular and has a few athletes who are household-names! i think it would only have positive results if it became an olympic sport!

The people saying it's boring or it's not a sport have obviously never played… Golf is hard as hell and takes a lot of skill. And yes, you do get sore from the work out… Well, I do but I don't play much so there's that…

Come on "the Squirrel" dont be so negative. Tiger Woods is a great golf player. I dont really like golf for the two reasons I noted earlier, but whenever he plays I am forced to watch the talent and skills he exibits.
Golf is fabulous and yes, definitely should be an Olympic sport. It's extremely difficult.

Re: the squirrel – Yep - Tiger shows emotion when he hits a bad shot. He's passionate - that's one of the things that makes him way more interesting than the run of the mill tour player (plus all that crazy talent.) If you've ever played golf seriously, you know it has a way of uhmm "bringing out the worst" in you. I'm the calmest guy in the world in even the most stessful situations but if I screw up a shot on the golf course that I was confident I could hit, clubs sometimes fly.
YES!!!!YES!!! It takes a skilled athlete to be a great golfer. Its not boring if you knew how hard and challenging the game really is. If it bores you then don't watch. There is plenty of olympic games that I think are boring, so I don't watch.
DEFINATELY NOT! im so angry! i play softball and am 16. i am desperately trying my hardest and have been for 10 years so that i will be lucky enough to play for australia in the 2016 olympics.. basically the whole of australia is let down, well at least all the girls who have devoted their lives to softball. all our scholarship training programs will be shutdown and we will have no where to go.. golfers already make billions of dollars on the pro circuits..there is so much out there for them… what about us.. thanks ioc..for destroying millions of young boys and girls dreams..for a couple of rich old men

Re: kakyjasper – I never said he was a bad player idiot, hes amazing! He just showcases too much emotion when he loses. He wins practically every game, the man is honestly the greatest in the history of the sport. He can't always win though, he needs to stop being so hard on himself.

Please tell me how golf is less of a sport than archery, curling, luge, sailing, and horse-jumping. Because you can win Olympic medals for all of those.
Re: rsvp – Professional athletes are not banned from competing in the Olympics. Shaquille O'Neal has an Olympic medal, the Williams sisters just won the doubles tennis gold in Beijing… there's no rule like that at all. The Olympics is about accepting all of the best athletes in the world.

However Tiger is not a def cert to win it… just look at the major British OPen last month.. he didnt even make the cut

It was a mistake to let professional athletes to play in the Olympics in the first place.. It should have remained as the highest goal to attain for an amateur
athlete. The professionals have their own high accolades to win in their
respective sports.
Re: caity123456 – I'm am so with you… they took softball ad baseball out for golf and rugby!! golf is super boring with absolutly no action… softball was making it's comeback with Japan winning the gold last summer… now young girls everywhere have nothing to look forward to because they will never be able to the play the sport they love- softball… it's so sad… at least the USA will still have a team every year so they can keep their skills up…
