It was moderately safe to be gay under Saddam. Sometimes one wonders what it really served to kill Saddam. in quite a few countries in the middle east- if it becomes known they're gay they get executed- not just attacked. How they treat gays (and sometimes westeners/women/christians etc) is pretty sick, i get sad thinking about it. The kind of crap that goes on would never be allowed here, but with countries like Saudia Arabia on the UNHRC don't expect much change.
