Alec Baldwin Defends Dick Vick
In an article for the Huffington Post, Alec Baldwin discusses his passion for animal rights and how forgiving Michael Vick would be a step in the right direction.

What Vick did is, obviously, senseless and reprehensible. But I believe Vick, as a wealthy and talented athletic superstar who performs his job out in the open before crowds of amped-up and highly opinionated fans, suffers an unfair disadvantage as compared to, say, the heads of a meatpacking plant or the directors of a medical research lab where animals are suffering the cruelest imaginable abuses behind walls and doors that remove them from our sight and, therefore, judgments. Vick did horrific things and he deserved to be punished. He served his time and now I wonder what good does it do to exile him in shame and not let him show his example of how one can be rehabilitated after that kind of behavior. If Vick returns to his true form as an NFL pro, that platform can mean real progress for the animal rights movement. Or do some people really not want to open that conversation? Vick is one man who, along with his friends, brutally tortured and killed many innocent dogs and called it a sport. Each day in this country, millions upon millions of animals are suffering lives of daily abuse in factory farming, but we turn away because that animal, unlike Vick's dogs, ends up on a grill and then on our plates. Animals that are not raised as pets suffer in ways that you and I don't really want to know.On the real problem:
Vick is easy to target as a villain. But the man who should have been setting an example for his young fans about how to comport oneself off the field can still do so. Donating a healthy figure from his enormous salary to any mixture of animal rights groups seems like a good start to me. I have a list for Vick when he is ready. But to ban Vick, to cast him aside and simply hate him, knowing that someone in his position stands potentially ready (and I do stress potentially) to effectively serve the interests of the very groups and individuals that he most offended, would be a mistake. Especially when there are enterprises operating in this country who will torture and kill more animals than a thousand Michael Vicks ever could, but you can not buy a ticket to watch them perform their job on a Sunday afternoon.On forgiveness:
Vick deserves another chance. One chance. Just like all of us who eat meat, drink milk, attend rodeos, circuses, zoos and horse races and yet find it easier to hand Vick the bill for all of the other, more systemic abuses in our society may find ourselves needing another chance one day. Just like Michael Vick.

We agree with some of what he said though. But we want assurances that Vick's remorse and follow up actions are genuine.
Only time will tell!

Serving time in prison is punishment. Once a person comes out of jail, thus serving their punishment, we have to give them a chance at redemption. Otherwise, what's the point. If Vick's not remorseful over the animals I;d bet a hundred bucks he's remorseful over the outcome and what it's done to his career and will probably never do something like this again. If one thing good has come out of this, its the attention given to this brutal sport and maybe people won't be so quick to ignore something like this when it happens in their own backyard. usually, people who slaughter animals do it quickly. i don't eat meat, and i do not want to imagine how and what exactly they do to the animals. But i doubt that they aggravate the animals and let them rip each other to shreds…it's a different story. in fact, aren't cows and pigs fed really well to bulk up? that's WAY different than starving a dog to anger him so he can fight more VICIOUSLY!!!

Laws regulate what the beef industry does. Beef farmers are in a legal business in our country and aren't trying to be famous sports heroes for what they do. There have been PLENTY of other NFL, NBA, and any other professional players that have done things that have actually taken HUMAN life. Just google, and you can find several. There have been football players that have killed someone while drunk driving with no real punishment. So how does this compare. And I find it CRAZY that some of the people who are so quick to hang Vick by the toenails care more about investing in animals than in human lives……….ie would ride or die for a pet, buy pet insurance but refuse to invest in the healthcare and well being of another fellow human being. wow, Baldwin's BS out in the open again. When I worked in the lab, my research DID use animals. Since I was doing DNA/RNA work, I was able to kill the animals humanely using halothane (they inhaled, fell asleep and then their hearts stopped). We did not use animals unless absolutely necessary and, whenever possible, if we planned any use of animals we spoke to the other labs in our building to see if we had mutual needs to minimize the use of animals. I now work in a clinical setting and can tell you that it's a lot easier getting experiments approved on humans than it is to get IACUC approval to use animals for research. Contrary to Baldwin's claims, animals are not routinely tortured in labs and they're not used unless necessary (if for no other ethical reason, for the the fact it is so expensive to use animals and researchers have be cheap).
As for Baldwin, I seem to recall him having no problem eating real chicken during his performances of A Streetcar Named Desire (and this was after he was a mouth piece for PETA). I guess it's wrong to use animals to develop research to save human and animal lives or to eat them if you're not a celebrity, but it's A-OK to eat them "for art"
like Baldwin.
Another little tidbit of information for the beautiful Hollywood PETA members: the next time you get your BOTOX injection, think about the zillions of mice that are killed every year for required testing of BOTOX lots. (There is an in vitro test that can replace the animals and industry is trying to get it approved by regulatory authorities but I don't recall ever hearing Baldwin or his PETA comrades bitchslapping folks for using BOTOX - I bet an awful lot of them do use it)

plus, vick didn't kill any dogs, he let other people do it in his house. and people he was famous he received the worst punishment. but i would love to see people express this outrage over child molesters, rapists and murderers who get out of jail and freely walk the streets everyday

slaughtering animals is CRUEL, no matter how it's done. but i still feel that dog fighting is more cruel. not to mention that a lot of the "bait" dogs that are used to anger the animals before their fights are stolen from people's homes. I live in Chicago, where it's not that uncommon for your dog to disappear if you leave him/her unattended for a second even in your own yard. dog fight organizers drive around to pick up these dogs and use them for something beyond cruel. i don't agree with slaughtering animals for food either but i think they're taken care of up until they're killed, where as these dogs are neglected and abused on PURPOSE their whole lives. again, this isn't a very meaningful debate since both cases are cruel to animals. I was just trying to show that Alec Baldwin bringing up Slaughter houses to defend Vick was a little unfair, because in Vick's case those dogs could've had a different life. it was up to HIM, and they didn't have to be abused. i wish everyone could be as disgusted by the slaughter of animals but that's not realistic for this society. at least i hope dog fights decrease from now. i can't believe how heartless these people must be to participate in something so inhumane!!!
