District 9 Already Set For Sequel?

It killed at the box office this weekend, but will District 9 get a sequel?

It might be too soon to know for sure, but many involved with the project seem to think it likely.

The star of the sci-fi thriller, Sharlto Copley, suggested that because of the filmmaker's method of "improvisatory dialogue" and shooting film at random, there may in fact be enough footage on the cutting room floor to already spawn a sequel. And if not, they'll make for killer DVD Extras.

"The behind-the-scenes DVD is gonna be crazy because we shot an enormous amount of footage," he says. "There were a lot of exciting avenues to want to go down and you really [have to fit it all] into a small block of time."

Last month, at Comic-Con, Peter Jackson, the film's producer, was reluctant to suggest that there might be a sequel, but given the immense success of the film so far, we can see it happening.

Did U see District 9 this weekend? Should there be a sequel?

i need to see if douche bag gets turned back into a human they better do a sequal

    6. 6

      perez is getting married!!!

    7. 7

It seems obvious that the way the movie ended was leaving the door open for a sequel.

    8. 8

It was a good movie, they should only make a sequel if it isn't one of those stupid ones where they hire some guy who used to write scrips for a TV sitcom to pump out the scrip in two days.

I saw it, and I didnt like it. My hubby and I left after about an hour. Just when the human was run into the area where the prawn lived. I like Science fiction and alien movies and maybe it is good to people who like that sort of thing. I am not big on documentary type movies. So to me, it was not that good.I probably wont see the next one.

    13. 13

      IT SUCKED

      Re: chavez

If you think this is just a movie about Aliens than you are sadly mistaken.

    16. 16

yes there has to be a sequel!! I need to know if Christopher Johnson comes back to save the human/alien!! Vikkus (?)

    17. 17

      hatetedit.

    18. 18

It's based on a true story that they have been covering up for 40+ years. It actually took place in Cuba in the early 1960s.

    19. 19

W/e.. I wanna see the first one.. maybe the sequel if it's any good..

    20. 20

Re: chavez – wow thats too bad you had to leave, cause just as you did, it stopped being a documentary and got to the real stuff. should have given it a chance.

    21. 21

it was amazing!! for those who don't like to think, its a great, entertaining film. if you have a brain, its great movie with deep meaning and social commentary.

    22. 22

It was a fucking fantastic movie. SO GOOD. I would definitely see a sequel so long as it has the same feel as the first one did.

    23. 23

I liked it but thought the ending was a little weak.
Re: Doomed – That explains soooooooo much!

    24. 24

Re: chavez – You should have given it a chance because it is NOT a documentary. Just after you left it really picked up and the story line is amazing. They did leave it wide open for a sequel but perhaps they should just leave it as it is - perfection.

    25. 25

DUH! Seriously Perez don't write stuff about things until you do maybe just a tiny bit of research or maybe SEE THE MOVIE….at the end they set up a District 10 and an Alien says he'll be back in 3 years. For F-sake perez your site just keeps getting worse and worse!

    26. 26

Re: J to the JJ – 100% correct! It is so much more than that! A lot of people won't get it. South Africans will get it more than anyone because of the history and parallels.

    27. 27

Re: meganvandee – You got it MeganVanDee….!

    28. 28

Yeah, there'll be a sequel in Three years

    29. 29

I didnt like the film format and how it demonized people. I know there'd be people who'd hate aliens but that movie shown a majority and made government figures evil…I dont know how I feel fully on this movie, it had good parts but the undertones were made so absolute.

    30. 30

btw I wouldnt feel bad if the alien just saved the human and wiped the rest of the city out. they treated them lke shit and tried to use them for personal gain. weak.

    31. 31

this wss thbe worst movie i ever saw. i wanted to get up and leave in hte middle of it. it was one of the movies that you can tell had a great pr team because they ware able ton disguise how nbad the moviw was until you are in the thaatre. we should have known something was up by the crowd of people that were coming in as we waited.

    32. 32

There better be a sequal or i'd be PISSED. They totally left you hanging at the end and that's ok IF they do a sequal but if they left it that way I'd be pretty mad I spent my money on a movie that doesn't really give you an ending. I did really like the movie and I want to see the sequal for sure!!!

    33. 33

I saw District 9 and loved it, but I don't think there should be a sequel. I think it was a perfect, self-contained story that was not so much about the aliens or their weapons, but about a man and his decisions. It was almost like a fairy tale (the original un-Disneyized kind of scary fairy tale), and even though a sequel would be cool because we'd get to find out what happens after the fact, I think the story was just too good for one. Not everything has to have a sequel!

    34. 34

I like how the movie had underlying messages in it :)
And yes, it was great, and a sequal would explain a lot, seeing how it ended :)

    35. 35

      amazing movie

    36. 36

omg there bettter be a damn sequel!
If you've seen it, you'll know he promised to help!

    37. 37

Re: chavez – so you have a pea brain. that's so sad.

    38. 38

Re: furiousfelinefuries – It wasn't really the government they made look bad, but a huge weapons company that had it's own private militia.

I don't recall the government being as prevalent as MNU. Yes, they had a hand in keeping them in the slums, but it was really MNU that exploited the prawn.

And I don't think the movie demonized humans. We've done it to ourselves. Just look at the last 20-30 years of South Africa's history.

    39. 39

Re: daughaj – "the crowd of people coming in?" What does that mean? I can tell by your sentence structure and horrible spelling that you don't have the mental capacity to grasp District 9, but I'd love for you to explain what you mean by the above statement. If you can. I'll forgive you if you can't. Reading comprehension and spelling can be pretty hard for the mentally deficient. *HUGZ*

    40. 40

      It was AMAZING!

I don't know how it can be a sequel, tho! It ended almost perfectly. I loved the story and it had great action and acting. A sequel should prove to be difficult.

    41. 41

YES YES YES!!!! YES to a sequel! There's so much story left, my husband and I think it should be a trilogy!

    42. 42

      YES!

    43. 43

YES!!!!! That movie was killer!!! I loved it and I'm a chick.

    45. 45

Amazing movie! Peter Jackson you've done it again!! Made me look at aliens in a whole new light. Will def b gettin it on Bluray! I so hope there is a sequel!

    46. 46

If the movie makes a profit, of course there will be a sequel.
Plot and character development aren't usually major considerations for a sequel!!

    47. 47

It was without a doubt the worst movie I've ever seen… I laughed my way through it coz it sucked so bad!

    48. 48

I would love a sequel!! IT was very creative..a beautiful movie

    49. 49

Re: meganvandee – I agree with you. If you have a functional brain then go see it if not, it's not the movie is not for you. I truly loved it

    50. 50

Re: furiousfelinefuries – Just so u know shit like that is really happening in Africa. Africans do treat other africans like that. IT hurts when the truth is portrayed on screen but the world is not a perfect place, humans are tarnished. The movie is trying to say a lot and that was the point

    51. 51

Re: honey97431 – Movies are made to be different. Why do all movies have to give the viewer a happy ending or a sad ending? As a true movie lover, I love unique movies and lingering endings sometimes can be beautiful and should be left as they are.

    52. 52

I didn't like this movie - I wanted to, but I was totally disappointed. The storyline/script sucked, acting was lame. I walked out of the theater thinking - so, why all the hype - what was so awesome about it? I won't see the sequal.

    53. 53

Re: Angie T – You said it beautifully. It was more about this nerdy insecure man, who wanted to have authority and feel valuable for the organization he worked for. He learned what being a human is really about. When the world see's you as different ,they can be cruel and so you want to fit in but at what cost? I loved his moment of self discovery..it was touching.

    54. 54

      It kicked ass.

    55. 55

ewwww NO!!!!! that movie was hella nasty! good story line but grusome! :[

    56. 56

This movie SUCKED!!! I understand what they were trying to do but I think the jerky camera angles were too much for me, I wanted to throw up! My coworker also saw the movie and said that the movie started to 'pick up' after about 45 minutes into it…

    57. 57

District 10 baby. The alien said he was coming back in 3 years and I believe him!

    58. 58

I had to leave ’cause the camera shaking made me ill. About 7 of us left and got our money back. But the others liked it.

    59. 59

this movie sucked so bad please don't torture us with a sequel.

    60. 60

im from joburg south africa and this movie is coming out this friday cant wait to see my country represent that shit!!!
by the way district 9 is just as scary in real life….that place is sooooper dangerous!!!!
if you really knew the stories about what happens in that place you'll admire the directors even more for filming there!!!

    61. 61

I HATED THIS MOVIE SO FUCKING MUCH!!!
      …yes i got it
      social undertones
      polital parallels
      BULLSHIT
      it dragged on and on
      there was no good parts
      no excitement
that comes to mind when i think of an alien invasion movie
I honestly don't remember the ending
as I was having trouble staying awake
it took forever to pick up speed
      and even then
      it was weak!

    62. 62

I think they should leave well enough alone. But we'll see in 3 years, won't we. I think maybe he and his wife will get together and have intergalatic children. Remember the prostitutes. Humans can have sex with aliens. Loved the makeup. What a great Halloween costume.
