Houston's: There's A Problem!

We don't even want to know what's in that food!

In abidance with a new Manhattan law, chain restaurants with at least 15 locations are required to provide calorie counts on their menus, but Houston's is putting up quite the fight!

Several Houston's locations in Manhattan have gone so far as to change their name and menu to avoid the city's mandates.

The restaurant claims that items are not consistent in each location.

For example, the 53rd St. location serves a grilled jumbo artichoke, while the Park Ave. has an identical dish now titled grilled California artichokes.

Several ingredients continue to be altered as the chain hopes to escape the daunting caloric reveal!

"It's clear as day it doesn't apply," said Craig Pincus, the kitchen manager at Houston's E. 53rd St. location. "He has sushi downtown - I don't serve sushi. We have different menu items. I use local produce companies and local meat companies that someone in California doesn't use."

The quality might be different, but the calorie count would be the same!

On the Manhattan menus, the name has been changed to Hillstone, the restaurant's parent company, though outside the sign remains Houston's.

We're pretty sure that the tell-tale sign of a chain is, indeed, a parent company!

"We told Houston's that their menus are substantially similar and that they would need to comply," Associate Health Department Commissioner Elliott Marcus, who slapped the restaurant with a fine.

A judge will rule in this fight next month.

Their reluctance makes us not wanna eat there!!!

    2. 2

I live in NY and have never heard of this place…just a tourist trap, stayyyy away!!

Perez, what do you think of the new PETA ad for "save the whales"?? interested to read your thoughts!!

    3. 3

theyre doing the same thing at their restaurants in dc too! they've changed the name and a few subtle things, but really its just houstons!

    4. 4

if they're protesting revealing their calorie count all that much then i can assume their food much be even more shockingly high in calories/fat/whatever than one would even guess

    5. 5

Uhm…wow. That makes me not even want to eat there. I generally don't really care about calories…but I'd kinda like to know that they'd tell me if I were to ask. Them not doing that makes me wonder what all is really going into what they serve.

I live in New York City & I Think The Calorie Count Is Garbage. Calories Has Nothing To Do With Being Healthy. Its About Fat, How Much And Exercise. If You Are Fat Then Maybe You Shouldn't Be Eating Out But Preparing Your Own Food At Home.. Being Fat Is Your Problem & People Shouldn't Have To Pay Because You Cant Control Yourself. Esp In Restaurant Where Food Differs. Maybe Starbucks Bugerking Etc But Not A Restaurant.

      Re: Alisa-ChanI agree 100%.
      .
Not only are they ashamed to admit the calorie figures for their food, their actions prove that they don't respect their customers - the very people who are generating their profits.
      .
The worst part is that this is happening in New York City, where there are literally 1000s of locally-owned restaurants of all types and price ranges, many of which use locally-sourced, sustainable ingredients.
      .
With all of the food choices in that great city, what kind of people travel all the way to to NYC and then eat at the same mediocre, portion-control places that they can find back home?

    8. 8

      BORING!!

    9. 9

THAT PLACE BLOWS! I worked there for 4 years and it was like working at concentration camp!

    10. 10

      Perez: There's a problem—and it's you, fatass

    11. 11

Then don't eat there you worthless piece of shit. Here's another example of government meddling where they don't belong. IT OUR PRIVATE LIVES. Fuck NY for trying to force people to do such a silly thing. And once again, FUCK YOU, for thinking they should comply.
You want government to allow you and your butt banging buddies to marry and in the same breath you want them to be able to force small business owners into a worthless compliance.
You are a walking contradiction you tubby loser.

      regards,
      fuck off and die

It has nothing to do with "hiding unhealthiness" from the public. Determining the caloric value in food involves burning it below water and measuring the change in temperature - a very time consuming and expensive process. Additionally, Houston's is privately owned and in that sense, has no obligation to post caloric information. If it were a publicly traded company - starbucks, mcdonalds, etc - this would be a very different story. At the same time, any sane individual can determine if he or she is eating something healthy. Fish and steamed veggies? Healthy. Salad with dressing on the side? Healthy. Cheeseburger with a baked potato covered in cheese and sour cream? Probably pretty high in calories.

Re: laurencroft – here's a way for you not to have to wonder anymore dear. DON'T EAT THERE.

    14. 14

abidance? can you educate the english speaking community of this word, dipshit?!! you're such a toolbag.

    15. 15

It's not that great a place to eat anyway.

      16

I'm sorry but who cares if there's a zillion calories in their food??? When you go to the restaurant, you're not supposed to care about that stuff. If you want to eat healthy, stay home and make your own damn food. Sheesh.

    17. 17

Just another way for the liberal government to interfere with business. If you are watching calories or your health, don't eat out, period!

    18. 18

i work there and its been changed to hillstone for about 3 months perez

The nanny state has once agai overstepped its bounds. When will we stop putting up with it?

This is a major intrusion into the restaurant's business and it will do absolutely nothing in the fight against obesity. Most people with weight problems know the calorie count of every food on the planet.

    20. 20

I bet if we all starve (including u) we wouldn't give a damn

    21. 21

I can see why they don't want to put the calorie count on the menu… They want their image to be higher-end than say TGI Fridays or McDonald's. Thats totally understandable.

    22. 22

Oh no! Houston's Grilled Chicken salad is my favorite… I hope finding out how many calories in it doesn;t completely ruin it for me :(

    23. 23

psh i love this place. its not rocket science to figure out if something has a lot of calories. blame yourself perez, not the food for being chubsters.

    24. 24

If the Perezcious (and family) do "not wanna eat there" then it is probably safe for discriminating diners as the Perezcious has been known to attack an immense plate of what appears to be a pig's vomit.

    25. Dono says – reply to this

      25

Hello have u ever eaten there? The food is great and it is obvious the food isn't low fat! The truth is when u eat in a restaurant it is loaded with calories! That is why it is so fucking good. Get the spinach dip! Its low fat. Yea right

    26. 26

This is awful publicity for them! The fact that they are going so far out of their way to avoid compliance tells me they have much to hide. That is enough of a reason for me to avoid dining there when I am in NY.

    27. 27

Um reallu Perez, you said the quality may be different but the calories are the same? Um that is incorrect. Shows how much you know about nutrition.

    28. 28

Oh jesus zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Who gives a holy fuck about this?

    29. 29

More and more each day, America is becoming a Communist country. Restaurants are being FORCED to provide calorie information by the GOVERNMENT?!
      ———————-
This is getting really scary, people.

    30. 30

Big Brother is watching you. Count those calories. Or Big Brother will count them for you. And tax you. Can't wait to see how happy you'll all be when they tax "sugary drinks." Which includes 100% fruit juice. What do you think makes apple juice so sweet? Sugar. Call it fructose if you like. Its' sugar. This nonsense is just a scam to get more $$$$$$ for the government to play with. Call it fee… a fine… taxes. It's the same thing. $$$ from YOUR pocket into the governments bottomless pit.

    31. 31

This is a bunch of crap. If chain restaurants have to do it. ALL restaurants should have to do it. Houston's is awesome!

    32. 32

This is ridiculous. If calorie count is that important to you and a restaurant doesn't post the count, then don't eat there. No need for the government to get involved.

    33. 33

      I cant stand shady businesses!
      down with that crap!!
I hope they shape up or ship the hell out

    34. 34

this is computer genrated perez bye no comments who is kourtney kardisan

    35. 35

Good for them! Those stupid "calorie counts" on the menu just look tacky.

    36. 36

Uhm yes it DOES matter where it is from you idiot.

    37. 37

perez–have you ever eaten at a hillstone restaurant? just about everything on the menu is made in-house, on a daily basis, and nothing is more than 24 hours old. aka: no preservatives, color or flavor enhancers, frozen food, or even second-party products.

yes, there are multiple restaurants owned by the same company (so technically it's a "chain"), but each one has its own character and menu. and each menu is fiercely delicious. as someone else mentioned, it shouldn't be the government's responsibility to deem what is healthy; people should be informed enough to make good decisions about what they put in their bodies!
