That's a big "yes", as the the Metropolitan Opera is reporting record first-day sales for the upcoming 2009-10 season.

The box office took in $2.5 million, including sales from the internet and phone.

This season opens September 21, with a new production of Tosca.

YAY! i'm glad REAL music isn't dying away! i go to the symphony here in detroit almost every week. everyone should check out their local orchestras ESPECIALLY you bitches in LA, Chicago, Philly (holla) and NYC. You all have the best in the world!

My Perezcious has been too BUSY promoting the likes of Sliimy to notice that people still enjoy other forms of entertainment.

Yay! People are discovering that it's powerful entertainment - compelling stories, great music, lavish costumes and seks - I mean sets :) . The M.O. also does simulcasts in movie theaters around the country, so you can see the opera live in many cities. You can also pay just a few bucks and watch taped opera on your 'puter.

No- we only like Lady Gag Gag and Slimy. We feel sorry for u now, Mario- you are pathetic.

  7. 7

yes of course people still go . . . if you pulled your head out of lady boy gagas ass youd have realised sooner!

Sales for the Dallas Symphony were way up this year, too. I thought that was weird. I think more people just stay home and look for fancy things to do in town, rather than taking expensive vacations right now.

  9. 9

    thats right! go classical music!

  10. 10

Tosca is pretty good. Not my fave, but definitely worth seeing. The opera is AMAZING! I would much rather go to the the opera than a pop music concert.

  11. 11

yes people still go to the opera, not everyone listens to shit electronica music like your precious Lady GaGa.

  12. 12

I hear they're doing a revival of COCOBALLS.

  13. 13

    Duh, perez. Yes.

  14. 14

Classical music is one of life's greatest pleasures. I was fortunate enough to attend a jr. high school which offered music appreciation and focused on classical, and I will always be grateful for this.

I love classical music and opera. I'm from Philly and love the Philadelphia Orchestra; the Opera Company of Philadelphia's not bad either. Now, the historical Academy of Music is def worth the visit whether you like opera or not!

There is a reason why soap operas are called "soap operas" - an opera gives you everything, gorgeous settings (sets), incredible costumes, complicated plots and to top it all off, the most exquisite voices. These precious stories and melodies have enchanted people for a couple of hundred years now and never get old. In contrast, Lady Gag Gag has nothing of value and permanence to offer, heck, she cannot even fill concert halls in Kurdistan or wherever she tries to make a buck now. Stay away from her, she destroys careers.

Opera is the most complicated of the art forms. It is simply wonderful–the music (the best singing in the world accompanied by orchestra), drama, costumes, movement, scenery, ….. "Tosca" by Puccini is a great one to see; talk about high drama…"Here's Tosca's kiss!"

  19. 19

Glad you acknowledged the opera, Perez. The upcoming season is going to be great, an opera lover's delight. Not only is Tosca in the line-up, but Turandot, Aida, La Fille de Regiment, Carmen, La Boheme, Tales of Hoffmann, and on and on. I can hardly wait!

Awesome Perez!!!! Yes- opera is HOT and there are many HOT opera singers, including myself :) You should talk more about opera on here!!! There is a lot of gossip in opera too, you know! :)

  21. 21

    Thanks for this post, Perez.
The really exciting news is that The Met is finally going beyond the tired old "usual suspect" operas and is exploring new repertory.
They are doing first-time-ever productions of Janáček's From The House of the Dead", Shostakovich's "The Nose" and Rossini's Armida with Renée Fleming sharing the stage with SIX tenors!
Peter Gelb is a genius - thank you, Mr. Gelb, for all you've done.

I went to the Met for the first time last October to watch an Italian opera. I enjoyed it immensily and if I wanted to listen to the opera in another language I could! Keep the arts alive.

  23. 23

I love Opera! I especially like Cavalliera Rusticana, because it is well balanced: instrumental - choral - female and male parts. Today I was listening to the very kitsch James Last Orchestra version of the Intermezzo from that opera and it made me cry. I love La Wally too, because the character is…let's use a Perez term…"Fierce".

  24. 24

I so wish I could get tickets for opening night! *Sigh*

YES ! My mother's an opera singer. Mainly in Belgium but also in St-Petersburg (Russia), Malta and Italy. She's a mezzo. Very impressive! And I am very proud of it! So proud that i just had to say this :-) .x.

@Margeaux: Oh, that explains why it sold out. Basically this season is going to be Kiss, Rolling Stones, reunited Beatles, Chili Peppers, U2, Led Zeppelin, Madonna, and Britney Spears. I'm just getting started with opera and a season of big draws is super appealing.

  27. 27

Cultured people do still attend but I could never see you at such a refined event as an opera at the Met.

  28. 28

I really want to go see Die Zauberflote at the MET, they have an amazing season this year people should try something new and go see an opera you never know, you might like it ( Candide with kristin Chenoweth and Patti LuPone is a great way to get into operas because it is light and funny. The correct term for it is an Operetta but it is a great way to get into opera.)

  29. 29

Of course Opera is still alive an well, you just wouldn't know because you don't have something that most opera-goers have. Class.

  30. 30

awesome!!!! nothing more spectacular than The Opera

  31. @v@ says – reply to this

Yes, Perez, there is a whole other world out there devoid of Spencer and Heidi.

  32. 32

obviously ther are people out there more cultured than you
