Mariah Missteps! Second Single Is A Dud!
Oh lambs, it's over! Mimi's new album is done! Cooked! And it's not succulent and ready to eat. It's dead. It's stale. And no reheating can save it!
We may tease her but we are a fan of Mariah Carey. We like her music. We admire and respect her. And we expect more from her!
Unfortunately, she has lost touch with who she is in the marketplace and what people want to hear from her. She also doesn't know what makes a hit single anymore!
Carey's new album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, has already been pushed back not once but twice. And, after the first single, Obsessed, was a disappointment, Mimoo her record label are now releasing a cover as Mariah's second single.
Unfortunately, the cover isn't all that amazing and won't be a huge smash on radio. In this day and age, if you want to sell records - lots of them - you need to get played on the radio. A lot!
Carey's version of Foreigner's I Wanna Know What Love Is is mediocre at best. It is uninspired and too faithful to the original. Yes, Mariah sounds great on the song, but it takes more than just her voice to make a single a hit. The song needs to be as good as she is. In this case, it's not. Listen to the song below.
If anything, Mimi's I Wanna Know What Love Is will be a hit on Adult Contemporary stations. But we would be very very very surprised if it becomes a massive crossover radio hit. A hit like the one she needs. A hit which she IS capable of having.
We had the opportunity to listen to several of the songs from Carey's new album and we were very disappointed. The songs aren't bad at all, but they are not smashes. There are far too many "album tracks" - and EVERY song should be of the caliber that it can be released as a single.
The new songs on Memoir put you in a mood. But, we don't wanna be put in a "mood" - we wanna go on a motherfuckin' journey!
We gave Mariah's camp many notes, all good, and sadly we don't think they took any of them.
If Carey had released THIS SONG or one like it as her first single, and not Obsessed, it would have been a HUGE hit for her.
Memoirs will debut big and drop quickly. It won't have legs or sell as well as it could have.
Oh, well. There's always the next album!

Sorry Perez, gotta disagree with you on this one. I really like it. A lot! Yes, while a majority of today's top 10 songs are fueled by artists like Rihanna and Pitbull, you're forgetting the buying power of a slightly different generation. People who remember Foreigner's original version, and most do, will likely purchase it. Also, remember a little remake called "How Do I Live" from Leann Rhymes? It was number one on the charts for 10 weeks. And I don't remember it sounding anything like the latest attempt from Ms. Jordan Sparks.

You also can't rely on international sales figures as being accurate, whether you're Mariah, Madonna. or whomever, because a lot of countries do not track record sales like the way the U.S. and some other countries do. A lot of these sales figures are just estimates.

Your theory that Europe is a bigger/better market than the U.S. is bunch of crap. The U.S. still has a strong influence on the rest of the world. Ask any foreign artist, particularly those from the U.K. what their biggest goal is, and most will say to have a hit record or make it big in the U.S. Ask any foreign artist past or present who have had a #1 record in the U.S. what their biggest accomplishment was, and many will say "going #1 in America." The only reason why you're saying that shit is because you're trying to make an excuse for Madonna not being as successful on the charts here as she used to be. If the circumstances were different, you wouldn't trashing the U.S.

You think you're being clever by saying stuff like "she only sold this much", "her tour only made this much," while you're comparing to her Madonna. A lot of artists would love to "just only" make as much or sell as much as Mariah. Your arguments are getting tired.
Too bad she was so "Obsessed" over Eminem that she had to release that as her first single. The song is catchy, but not up to her usual standards for songs. They are both amazing artists, but in completely different genres (clearly). Tracks like he made on her is what he does and has always been known for doing. She tried to be cute and failed miserably by messing with him…both professionally, and in the public eye. She's supposed to be the amazing classy singer (although her wardrobe is certainly debatable when it comes to "classy") that takes the high road. I'm a huge Eminem fan, and IMO, I think this is hilarious and great that this diva bitch is finally failing. I'm sure he's loving it too, while his album continues to top the charts and people continue to buzz about him. I hope she continues to fail and just goes into retirement or something.
Also, this whole Mariah vs. Madonna debate is ridiculous. Yes, they have both sold a ton of records, had/have amazing success, but it's time for a new generation of singers. Madonna is what, 51 now? And Mariah's almost 40? I'm all for being sexy when you get older but there's better ways to do it than M & M are doing it. For God's sake, Madonna has THREE kids now, including gorgeous Lourdes which it's been made clear she's jealous of. She's up straddling the stage and flashing her crotch everywhere? Dating a 23 year old? You're NOT controversial anymore, Madonna. We've seen it all. And Mariah? All her stuff sounds the same. Great voice? Yes. But she marries someone like Nick Cannon, writes stupid songs like "Obsessed" (well she didn't write it, but she sang it), dresses like a 16 year old, and runs around handing out popsicles (or w/e it was) on national TV. Let's make room for next era of singers with long careers…i.e., Rihanna, Keri Hilson, Britney, Carrie Underwood, Beyonce, Mandy Moore even…and not to mention all the amazing singers we have yet to hear!

The song is TRULY STUNNING. Mariahs version is vocaly impeccable, full of emotion and still respectful towards the original. This woman is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.
