Madonna Explains Her Gypsie Comments
As we mentioned yesterday, fans began to boo Madonna this week in Romania after she spoke out at one of her concerts against the discrimination against Gypsies in eastern Europe.
But Madge has never been one to censor herself, so why start now? In fact, Madonna says she felt compelled to comment on their discrimination, saying it "made me feel very sad."
Her Madgesty paused during her show and said:
"It has been brought to my attention, that there is a lot of discrimination against Romanies and Gypsies in general in Eastern Europe - it made me feel very sad. We don't believe in discrimination, we believe in freedom and equal rights for everyone."
And when she mentioned discrimination against homosexuals and others, she received even more boos but mixed in with some cheers.
Madge's rep explains, "Madonna has been touring with a phenomenal troupe of Roma musicians who made her aware of the discrimination toward them in several countries so she felt compelled to make a brief statement."
According to a recent report by the EU Fundamental Rights Agency, almost half of the 12 million Gypsies in Europe have faced discrimination in the last year alone, in situations ranging from housing, health care and even to education.
Sad.

Ugh, look at her… How can she not be embarrassed of herself by now? Think of your children atleast, Madonna! Good God; no wonder she doesn't let them watch TV. She doesn't want them to see who their mother really is! Money grubbing, media whore… sick!
I think she made a really stupid comment … she doesn´t even know any real gypsies. all her musicians are from a higher tribe of gypsies and these people have a really different lifestyle, than the rest of them… I´m from Slovakia and they are a real pain… I love their music because it´s cheerful and good for dancing. However their attitude to life, to society is just terrible. Yeah, they´re nomad people and they have their cuture, but I think, they don´t have the right to abuse the social system. In my opinion, people in America have no idea what it is like living next to/with them. So please, do not make any anti-discrimination comments, if you do not know the facts. It´s just unfair. These people (most of them) have 8-9 children, don´t work, are addicted to drugs, rob and kill people and they wonder, why people don´t like them. Oh, and they just LOVE the media, where they can complain about racism… this is just so STUPID. Please Madonna and Perez: before you make a comment on a political thing, do some research in advance. Thanks.
It's not surprising that she got booed, and most likely, she has very little grasp of the situation. the problem tho, is that people seem to be associating the horrible things that some (or as the accounts here attest to, most) gypsies do is due to their genetics or something. take any ethnic group in the world, subject them to the hundreds of years of persecution born of ignorant ideals like witchcraft and whatnot, relegate them to the lowest rungs of society, and you'd get the exact same thing. how can we hope for anything better to come of people who are born into such dire circumstances and hatred? it has nothing to do with being gypsy, it's just what happens to anyone who's born into such a world (and coming from one of the poorest nations on earth, i can attest to that). if someone who suffered extreme brutality at the hands of gypsies said the same thing, we would probably think twice before booing, but the fact remains that whether these words came from such a person, or a privileged middle-aged singer, they have the same grain of truth in them.
she needs to realise that not every country has the american delusion that EVERYONE in the ENTIRE WORLD deserve freedom & equal rights.
Right or not, though I'm sure she lacks some facts about whatever the situation may be, no one wants to hear her preach at a concert. They don't pay for that and obviously didn't care to hear it.
Hypocrite. she does not even believe in equality. She stays in 5 star luxury and puts up her road crew at the cheapest dump she can find.

Madonna doesn't know how live the "roms" they doesn't wan't to work, only to steal and to abuse the grandmothers and childs to ask for money in the streets, to live out the cities in "chabolas". Spain is full of them, thanks to the soft laws, Italy doesn't want them, don't worry Spain is glad to receive them. We have the worst goverment in years
What does Madonna know about the situation of gypsies in Europe ? Really now, it's easy to read some reports and say : those poor innocent people, why is everybody so mean to them ? I live in Romania and the situation is not very peachy ! Do you think the gypsies beg because they have no money and just want something to eat ? Come down here and see for yourself the CASTLES they built from stealing, begging , STABBING PEOPLE SO THEY CAN GET THE SMALL GOLD NECKLACE AROUND YOUR NECK. And what do the authorities do ? NOTHING ! Nobody looks up how on earth did they manage to build 5 story houses if they have no job. the police does nothing because of the laws that protects them ! A FRIEND GOT STABBED IN THE PARK BECAUSE HE REFUSED TO LET HIS GIRLFRIEND GET RAPED BY 12 GYPSIES ! AND NOBODY MOVED A FINGER AGAINST THOSE MONSTERS!
And the worst part of it all is that Europe thinks that the whole country in populated by gypsies (because of resemblance Romania- RRomani people , and no, i have not misspelled, it's with 2 'r') and people from countries like Spain and Italy instintively reach to their purses or pockets when people tell them they are romanian (true romanians). How do you think that feels ? There are A FEW gypsies that really surpassed their condition and are remarkable persons. They are intelligent and trustworthy and to those people nobody points fingers 'hey, you're a gypsie !' But this is just a small percentage.. Because the rest f them don't care. they make 10 children so that they can send them off to begg, they MUTILATE THEIR OWN CHILDREN SO THAT PEOPLE WOULD HAVE PITY ON THEM AND GIVE THEM MONEY! Try giving them food , they'll spit you in the face and ask for money !
And these things i have said, are only a part of what's really going on. Of course, there are romanian criminals too, I AM NOT SAYING WE ARE SAINTS, but nobody is protecting them ! because they don;t deserve to be ! you're a criminal , no matter your race !
So, i'm sorry if this offends you, i'm sorry for dragging those few good people down the drain along with these.. nomads (that's what they are, nomads, they have no origins in romania) but i simply had to speak my mind.
And another thing that should make you think about the gypsies.
I live in an area called Dobrogea where not one, not two, but 5 (!!!) different minorities or nationalities or whatever COEXIST IN HARMONY (except gypsies). So you think we simply chose to hate them because we like being mean to such innocent and poor people?

I am from Romania.
I was at the concert and I saw on TV what Madonna said one day after the concert and of course heard what she said at the concert.
I got gold bar tickets so I was close.
Madonna said that because she DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE CRIMES AND THINGS THAT GYPSIES DO IN EASTERN EUROPE.
NOT only Romanian gypsies but all here in Eastern Europe.
She then said sorry.. the day after the gig through her spokesman.
Now she knows why we hate gypsies here.
So please do not say that WE are the bad ones.. the fans that boo'd here at the gig.
We know better and now Madonna does too.
In FACT SHE LIKES ROMANIA AND HER CREW AND GIRLS LIKE IT TOO. We know that.
She will probably come back in the future maybe because we love her and she does not like discrimination. In fact like she said even us Romanians are discriminated because of the gypsies that live here…

my mother used to live in Romania and gypsies aren't being discriminated against because of their race but rather their criminal actions; stealing, begging, rape, abuse and even murder. I'm not saying that they're all bad (majority of them are), but there is a reason why people don't like them and it's only the people that live with them that understand this - unlike madonna.
gypsies are nothing in romania. they steal, rape, and are basically the beggars of romania.
she had no right to say that about something she has no idea about, just for the hell of it. just because shes madonna.
I am from eastern europe and I have to say that what she said about the gypsies is not true. They are not facing discrimination, because I can strongly say that around here they even have more rights than us and also they do very bad and serious crimes(not all but like 90% of them). I know what I'm talking about…she doesn't even know what she's saying, she just talks about certain things that she does not have to face every single day. About the homosexual part, if the crowd did boo her…well that wasn't nice at all, but only on this issue.
