Weed Protects Brain From Booze?!

Of course, this research was done at a college!
According to a new study at University of California San Diego, marijuana may stave off damage caused by binge drinking.
WTF?!
Brain scans were performed on three different groups all ranging in ages between 16 and 19: binge drinkers, binge drinkers who also smoke pot, and those with little drug or drinking experience.
The binge drinkers showed damage in their white matter, yet those who drink and smoke showed damage only in three of eight areas of the brain, only little more than the control group.
In extremely unexpected results, their brains were in substantially better shape in seven areas of the brain over the binge drinkers.
Researchers will continue on whether marijuana somehow stops alcohol from damaging brain cells.
If that's true, then why are frat guys so damn stoopid?!

I don't get this. Perez seems to buy into ALL of the hyperbole about Marijuana, and seems to do ZERO research into the science of it. The science is growing LONG regarding the benefits of marijuana, and as far as vs. booze, there is no contest. Marijuana is BENIGN compared to booze.
Perez, with all of the drinking you do and promote, you owe it to yourself and your readers to educate yourself on Marijuana.
Please pick up some back copies of "Treating Yourself" magazine for starters; it contains much of the direct links to the most current studies and science.
Please stop disrespecting the plant. That plant may end up saving us all from destruction due to resource depletion. You'd know that if you spent 5 minutes doing research.

Not surprised at all. I smoke weed, barely drink at all. I'm healthy, happy, active with a great brain. Weed is good for you. Booze should be illegal, not weed. Nothing worse than being around a bunch of loser drunks.
Frat guys aren't always stupid. I know several former frat guys who are crazy intelligent and are better contributors to society (engineers, mathematicians, college professors) than I am… and I was clean throughout college. It's more likely that frat guys seem stupid while imbibing some substance or another. But we know Perez likes to stereotype, so onto the more important subject…
This research does not surprise me at all. Over the next twenty years or so, when legitimate tests are made on marijuana, I think we'll find even more potential benefits. Because the government has been exceedingly closed-minded about drugs (particularly marijuana and LSD), we've lost a lot of researching time… of course there have been tons of research on marijuana, but a lot of this (pre-1990s) is biased towards an anti-drug policy. I did senior seminar term paper on this subject– not just for marijuana, but government influences on research and public opinion– so I did hours of research on this topic alone. Our future will certainly be more open and very interesting… just wait.

On the topic though: Frat boys are that dumb from high school on… Maybe they should not binge drink and smoke weed instead. It's much healthier and can make you more creative! I've never liked hard alcohol. I enjoy a good beer and some nice red wine (which is also healthy) every once in a while. But on a daily basis, I prefer the ganja! No hangovers, no killing brain cells or your liver!!!

I agree, Perez you need to quit hating on weed and do your research. There is not one recorded case of marijuana harming the body. In fact its less harmful than caffeine if harmful at all.
I recommend checking out a recent documentary called "The Union: Business Behind Getting High". Its by far the most informative video I've seen on the subject. The movie has a lot of other fun facts like why marijuana was outlawed in the first place…. one hint… it has nothing to do with getting people high! You'll be surprised.
And, yet, neither protects the unfortunate who happens to be in the way of some idiot driving under the influence of either.

Last I remember there is proof steroids can lead to sterility and enlarge your prostate, also… I don't know if you heard about the recent findings they released on tanning beds increasing your risk of melanoma by 75%. Yeah, its funny that the very people who are against marijuana are exposing themselves to even more harmful drugs like alchohol, tobacco, caffeine, asprin.. you name it they kill more people a year than marijuana and not one case of death has marijuana been ruled out as a primary suspect as the causes of death were majorly due to suicide or accident… never because of overdose or cancer.
Re: Butterfly_1 – In case you didn't know.. that little experiment that Reagan launched stating "marijuana kills brain cells" was debunked when the truth was released on how the experiment was administered. They put masks on the test monkeys and pumped tons of smoke into their lungs without any oxygen. Eventually the poor monkeys aphixiated from carbon monoxide (a deadly gas given off by any burning agent) poisoning. Instead of releasing these blatantly obvious link of suffocation and brain damage, Dr. Heath blamed it on the THC.
There is no real reason for marijuana to be illegal. Any argument otherwise is based on ignorance or an attempt to control peoples lives through misguided, personal morals.
Umm… It would be illegal if they were forcing people to binge drink or smoke in order to take part in the study. The drinking/smoking was already done, they were simply scanning the brains of these college students. How is that illegal? Oh yea its not.

For example, holding your breath kills brain cells, head banging kills brain cells, drinking alcohol kills brain cells, talking on your cell phone kills brain cells. There is no real way to measure how many brain cells are killed. The only way in which a medical physician can exam your brain cells is via a CT Scan. And this study is proving that people who solely binge drink have LOST MORE brain matter than those who binge drink AND SMOKE WEED! Yet another medical miracle from a plant which your government does not want available to YOU!
The comment about this study being conducted at a university is ridiculous. If you know anything about scientific research, you would know that a great deal of it is done at universities across the country and abroad.

The findings in Reagan's Heath Monkey study were completely fabricated because the monkeys were suffocated. The majority of drug associations do not recognize Heath's study. Stupid Republicans need to listen to Schwartzeneger and Ventura, they know what the hell they're talking about when it comes to the amazing attributes of marijuana.
Is anyone really shocked that drinking alcohol is worse than weed??? You can't overdose from smoking but thousands die every year from alcohol and alcohol related accidents. Educate yourselves on why weed is illegal and it will be clear that its not a matter of protecting anyone its about making money.
I am a frat boy apparently we are deemed "sstoooopid"… u might want to rethink that. in my fraternity house our average GPA is a 3.7, and we are all heavy drinkers.. I guess not ALL frat boys are like that.. that's very stereotypical.
PS. some of us are Law School grads and have Internships to deal with, WHILE we throw the biggest parties on campus…
