Dr Drew On DJ AM
Filed under: Drugs > DJ A.M. > Dr. Drew
Famed addiction specialist Dr. Drew Pinksy believes that the pain medication given to DJ AM for injuries in the plane crash he survived last year, may have contributed to his untimely demise.
"It very slowly and subtly reawakens addiction," said Drew of prescribed meds igniting a possible relapse. "I'm not saying it was inappropriately prescribed, I'm saying he didn't know the risks."
DJ AM was said to be taking anxiety and pain medication for two skin graft surgeries undergone due to injuries sustained in a 2008 plane crash.
Tragic.

slow news day much???
even after the second chance he couldnt put that crack pipe down..so sad..
I used to love dr drew when he was on love line in the 80s but now he just seems like an attn whore. shut up, there is nothing to say except this guy was highly irresponsible to his own person.
Enough already.
He was a DJ-
The only reason we even know who he is, is because some celebrities knew him, and you reporty on him.
To me, he is just a hanger-on, celebrity wanna-be that died of an OD.
So sad
I agree. I liked Dr. Drew on Love Line, now he just irritates me. He's inserting himself into whatever situation will give him more attention.
actually that is most likely true. Having been on anxiety and pain meds, I know what happens when you try to get off them. I think he thought he was strong enough since he had been able to stay sober for so long. It is sad that he didn't feel that there was someone he could turn to for help when he got too desperate. It doesn't matter if he is famous or not; but being famous maybe he is able to shine the light on this for someone rather than a "normal" person dying that the same thing has happened too.
OD= Suicide, if you are taking drugs you are taking time from your life, no one was giving him the drugs he was taking them. that makes him a dead loser.
hmph
i'm not sure why ur posting this tho :S
i agree with the last two comments. This guy is responsible for his own death, lets focus on the people around the world who are losing their jobs, their houses, etc… and of all people, they are ones not doing the drugs–what does that tell you
fuck off stealmystoriesfromeveryonewhileireapthebeneits. asshole
He was a fucking addict…anyone knows the risks before they do anything. It is part of bodies nervous system to second guess every thing we ingest…or i his case smoke.
He was weak and he died for it.
Was he talented? absolutely…. was he stupid….yep. Weak and powerless
Oh, please! I don't know any doctor who doesn't warn patients about taking too much pain medication! Could I be the only one who encounters those type of the doctors? Or could celebrities be the ones ignoring all the warnings because they think they are better than everyone else?
Everyone knows damn well what drugs and prescription pills can do to you! Unless you've been kidnapped and locked away for the last decade (and unfortunately we are seeing stuff like that really happens), there's no way people don't know the risks! They just don't care! As a matter of fact, the prescription drugs seem safer because they can carry it around much more easily.
Re: zaniac01 – Dude…when you smoke crack you have the risk dying every time. Nobody is strong enough for crack…well maybe Bobby Brown
I would give Dr. Drew more respect if I thought that he really cared about his patients on Celebrity Rehab. He doesn't seem to really offer much help other than maybe sitting there listening and sort of enabling them… I do think it is all show/money with him. How many of these people have really straightened out from that show?? Probably zero!!
Wow, what is wrong with all of you? Is is unfortunate that he died after taking drugs or whatnot? YES, it is when that person was a good person. He had a family. What is wrong with you people? He has to be more famous to matter? So incredibly rude, and disrespectful to him and his friends/family.
And by the way…95 percent of you drugs are bad wa wa wa kids are just that…Fresh out the new version Dare Program(obviously gone now) and under 15….
If you need anxiety meds, you cant just "go talk to someone" goodness…so uninformed…so incredibly uninformed…In no way did Drew say taking the meds was the problem, just how taking them had risks that he didnt understand with his addiction being 9 years old.
I dont even know him, Ive never followed Blink 182, but shoot, the guy deserves respect…not "oh hes not famous enough and its his fault anyways"…you know, we dont know the entire story, and a death is a loss, and a loss is sad…period
i hope he finally found peace after all hes been through
He chose to do the drugs. He died. It IS sad, but he made the worst CHOICE possible. Addiction is another of nature's way of kicking people off this overcrowded planet. Only the strong survive. The strong can help the weak, but it ultimately is an individual's CHOICE.
I have to agree with Dr. Drew. I was an addict 10 years ago (been clean ever since) and when I had surgery 2 years ago I was given addictive painkillers. I went through serious depression and addiction again that ended up with me trying to take my life. Thankfully I lived and I found out on my own the connection between being a former addict and taking pain medication. SO many people don't know and it's very sad how many get addicted again. If you were EVER addicted to drugs make sure you tell your doctors and surgeons (if you ever need surgery).
Maybe hospitals and doctors need to worry less about whether or not people are in pain and more about whether or not they are actually getting better. Having a little pain isn't going to kill a person, getting addicted to percocet could.
Dr Drew doing some media whoring again?
Re: YUCK – You are so off base. Imagine being in such a dark place and feeling like their is no way out. How sad and tragic. Depression and anxiety are diseases. Would you tell someone who has cancer that they to are a loser. I mean seriously, this guy was in such a bad place that he couldn't see any other way out. How sad…he wasn't your average junkie…at least give him that much!
Re: SdChief – THANK YOU!!!!
Speaking of addictions, leave it to that twit to weigh in when he has NO KNOWLEDGE of the situation. He's a self-important pontificating bozo…addicted to feeling important.
think of all the resources that DJ used in the last year; much could have been saved had he died in the plane. ever thus.
Re: putthekoolaiddown27 – Excuse me but being a drug addict is a CHOICE. Contracting Cancer is NOT A CHOICE. Even people who do all the right things like get enough exercise, eat well, don't smoke…THEY CAN GET CANCER.
*
I have no sympathy for smokers who get Cancer just like I have no sympathy for ADDICTS WHO CHOOSE TO TAKE DRUGS.
Re: SdChief –
Well said. Too bad most of these people that comment are hypocritical losers anyway.
r.i.p dj am xoxoxoxoxoxoxo
Unfortunately, most people in this world have absolutely NO real understanding about addiction. Any type of addiction is a disease, a disease as real as cancer, MS, Parkinsons, etc. The difference is that DJ AM's disease, most likely, brought him more pain, more shame, and more sadness than most people could ever imagine. DJ AM may have lived in the 'celebrity world' yet he was a person, with thoughts and feelings like everyone else. He deserves the same respect, the same compassion, as anyone else. Rest in Peace.
Prescription medication abuse is rampant. Even when doctors advise of the risks, people still take them. I am fortunate that I have never had to take anything more than an advil when I have a bad headache..but there are peeps that have had terrible accidents that have left them with chronic pain. What do you do?? Live with pain, or take a pill. I guess it depends on how much pain you are in. It is a hard question to answer.
I like Dr. Drew, but as a nursing student I have to comment on this. I would just like to let everyone know that addiction issues arise in only about 1% of the population that is given opioid medications (morphine, vicodin, codine, etc) to control pain. I would also like to say that burn pain is considered one of, if not the most severe of all types of pain/injury. There is no sense in scaring people into believing that pain medications that were given to DJAM for burn pain are responsible for his relapse. In fact, I would say that making such a suggestion is highly irresponsible becase it might actally keep others from treating their pain for fear of creating an addiction, when the true risk of one is not significant. Dr. Drew needs to go back to school.
Obviously some of you commenters have never had any REAL pain in your life. No, I'm not talking about stubbing your god damn toe or falling down on the sidewalk when you are wasted. Some people have REAL, CHRONIC PAIN. How can you criticize someone for taking medicine that they NEED? He didn't take the pain medicine to get high folks, he took the pain medicine to feel NORMAL. So he could get out of bed like everyone else in the world and live without PAIN. I seriously cannot believe how ignorant and insensitive people are. "He's a drug addict so who cares." I'm sure he had a family and tons of people that cared about him tremendously. Have some respect. The poor guy was in a fucking plane crash. I can't imagine how badly that fucks with your anxiety!
I'm addicted to Dr. Drew. What a fine piece of Silver Fox he is!!!!
I hope that each person who has something shitty to say about dj am has a child who is an addict- you will learn not to be such an asshole when your child is dead. Fuck perez- he never ges his story correct because he is such a dumb piece of shit. Listen to the actual conversation with dr. drew on kevin and bean at kroq.com.
