The Oscars Change Voting Rules

In an effort to recognize "the picture that has the most support from the entire membership," the Academy Awards are altering their voting procedure for "Best Picture" this year.
In the past, members have been asked to choose 1 nominee on the final ballot. This year ,they are being asked to put the 10 "Best Picture" nominees in order of preference, an unprecedented move in Oscar history.
The preferential system has been used before for the nomination process, but never for the final ballot. So why change now?
“There are certain mathematical dangers with more nominees,” says the Academy’s executive director, Bruce Davis. “You could really get a fragmentation to the point where a picture with 18 or 20 percent of the vote could win, and the board didn’t want that to happen.”
So naturally if a film has more than 50% of the first rank, they would win the award. That's pretty rare, though, so this new system is designed to be as accurate as possible, factoring the other rankings when choosing the winner.
Now, the nominated films will be striving to be in the top 5 to have a better chance at winning the coveted "Best Picture" Oscar.
This news has not yet been formally announced to the Academy members.
“I know people have been wondering about it, and even worrying about it,” says Davis. “At some point we’ll do a mailing, probably in the fall membership quarterly, to make it clear what’s coming up."
Surprise!
What do U think about the new way to vote?
Seems fair to us!

D-9 should win, whatever the rules.
What was wrong with the old way?
"Mathematical dangers" - wtf? Everyone knows that this move will put more ( a lot more) commercial films into the mix, thus hopefully upping viewership for the self congratulatory spectacle which is actually one long commercial with designer endorsements out the arse now.
commerce over context, ratings over art… probably the best move they could make is moving all the writing and other less star-worthy awards to the tech awards night and air that show on Sundance! Or have Daniel Craig or other yummy respectable stars host separate pods of awards…
Think about it, what was the last year in which you saw 10 Oscar-worthy films? Ridiculous!
I see a movie about every 15 days. I have yet to pay for an Oscar "best pic" winner in the last 10 years. Who goes to some of that crap?
i think we should vote. the viewers. Like the acadamy choice awards lol. But thats just me
oh please. they are so to the left they vote for anyone and anything that happens to be the most politically fashionable….can we say harvey milk everyone??? no? how about inconvenient truth? it's pure self gratification….you really like me!….and egocentric. to the viewing audience it's only entertainment.
Re: matty is never first – So you've never seen Lord of the Rings, the Departed, Gladiator, Million Dollar Baby, or Braveheart? You need to learn to watch better movies then.
I think alot of Indie films will be winning The Best Picture award. That's what I think.
NINTH!!!!!!!…..LOL
sure go for it
i think this way better . . . .they should vote this way on all nominations, or at least the most high profile.
Re: HarryPotterLover –
NOTHING. Theyre just trying to be complicated.
Nothing ever stays the same… SO LAME!
It's an injustice to whichever films had competed for an Oscar under the original rules. Perhaps add a most successful picture award, that's what these new results will verify.
the film that gets the most votes wins, why does it need to be overcomplicated
I think awards suck.In the end the final choice is just that..a choice of a few people ,telling the vast mob of billions what is best and leaving them no choice of their own.
Awards are ego stroking BS and worthless……
I can decide for myself which of the movies I think is best etc etc……….I do not need glitz and glamour and phony air kissing and posing on red carpet to tell me.
it's all rigged any ways. Just like the Senate in MA…..
Sounds like they're trying to make the Oscars RELEVANT again…don't think you were born yet when i last watched the Oscars Perez!
Oscars shouldn't give the votes to the public because film like "twilight" will end up winning most people don't see good quality film its a shame

Maxie pad, I agree: District 9 rocked.
Jeez pervez, hopefully it will stimulate the brain-dead studios to raise their standards, rather than beating remakes and sequels to death.
