Laura Ling And Euna Lee Share Their Story
Current TV journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee returned home last month after 140 days of imprisonment in North Korea, and now the journalists are sharing their brave story!
Ling and Lee have written a detailed account of their time in North Korea for the Current TV website, revealing exactly how their capture and arrest went down.
The journalists crossed the North Korean border in the company of a "trusted tour guide" on March 17th, but both Ling and Lee realized the extremely dangerous situation they had put themselves in. The two tried to cross the border back into China, but it was too late.
Even though the two crossed the Chinese border, North Korean guards sprinted into China and dragged Laura and Euna back into North Korea.
Ling and Lee write:
"We were firmly back inside China when the soldiers apprehended us. Producer Mitch Koss and our guide were both able to outrun the border guards. We were not. We tried with all our might to cling to bushes, ground, anything that would keep us on Chinese soil, but we were no match for the determined soldiers. They violently dragged us back across the ice to North Korea and marched us to a nearby army base, where we were detained."

Re: guiltypleasure – They are. They are very efficient at shooting down illegal foreign citizens. These women were lucky enough to be taken to prison. Many Mexicans are brutally murdered at the border. No questions asked.
So sad they had to go through this, but story or no story, you have to be very cautious about going to foreign countries to expose a major underground practice. Countries like that tend to have their own laws and probably make them up as they go along. And forget if you're an American. The consequences are magnified. I give journalists credit for trying to bring us good stories, but is it worth risking your life? Just knowing they had to go through so much to uncover their story even before being captured says it was way too dangerous. In hindsight I supposed they should have been satisfied just interviewing the defectors in China. But they again, I could see they were probably enticed by their trusted tour guide and thought they'd be safe. In any event, here's wishing them a speedy recovery from their ordeal.

Their passports should be taken and never allowed to leave the US. They created an international incident. Seasoned "journalists" would have known about the culture, laws, etc.. before going abroad. I hope they don't make any money off this, but I'm sure they will end up on Oprah eventually.

Now, I believe that they are working on movie and book deals while the victims whom they were trying (poorly) to cover are suffering more. They blew it big time. These women know it, too. I will be interested to see how they spin this. According to media, some of their contacts have been interrogated and incarcerated. These "journalists" turned out to be amateurs and they lamely put the very victims whom they were attempting to help, in dire straits. Pathetic.
