Mel B. Takes No Chances, Takes Control… At The Nail Salon!

Is Mel B. a germaphobe or just being cautious?
The singer has been spotted at nail salons in Los Angeles getting beautified with manicures and pedicures. But she's careful not to use the salon's equipment.
Instead, Scary Spice takes her own manicure set!
Mel B. was recently seen at L.A.'s Bonjour Nails unpacking her own file, cuticle cutters, scrubbing brush, and nail polish.
We understand taking your own nail polish, but is taking your own equipment too much?
One insider reveals that Mel "likes to save a few bucks and go to cheaper salons. But she brings her own stuff so she doesn't have to worry it's not sanitary."
Hmm, guess she's just cheap and not a germaphobe?
What do U think? Do U take your own manicure set to get your nails done?

in all actuality, a magazine i was reading said, you should take your own manicure set with you if possible. there are so much bactira and stuff around those places and you know whereyour stuff has been. you dont want to risk infections or even a staph infection. way to go mel b!
blllllaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Nail salons are FILTHY. I would take my own gear, too…if I wasn't so phobic about people touching my hands or feet to do manicure/pedicure.
its pretty when you really think about it…some places to clean thier shit properly
JESS!!!!!! Perez im surprised you don't know. Ever since paula even bootleg nail salons allow you to buy your own kit. Its like the thing to do.
I take my own file and buffer with me too. Cuticle clippers and nail cutters. If you don't see them being sterilized you should take the tools with you. I just know my stuff is only used for me.
The nail salon I go to is very clean and a few years ago when there were some outbreaks at dirtier salons, my salon actually put together kits to sell to us and suggested we buy them if we would like to feel safer! Great idea!
Wtf?! That's just plain weird.
ehh not a good one perez.. i dont think its weird at all that she brings her own set to a nail salon. plenty of people do it and i'd rather bring my own set then use ones that touched toe fungus.. just sayin'
As I know a few people who have got infections from Chop Shops & most from unclean equipment, I get it. Now, I wouldn't have the balls to do THAT; I just go to high-end nail spas.
:)
people do bring their own equipment all the time — just to be safe. Perez swears that he knows evvverrythiiing. Such a retard sometimes. =/
Nail salons, cheap or expensive, are notorious breeding grounds for bacteria. People are actually encouraged by experts to bring their own stuff.
At a salon I use, people can pay to have their own set of the tools they use such as the files and stuff. So it's not unusual. If you think about the fact that if they nick your cuticle in the wrong way your going to bleed and in truth you dont know how well they are sterilizing things.
Um actually, one of the high end salons in San Francisco has their customers purchase a nail file at the salon and they save in a labeled ziplock back and only use it on the customer it belongs to for manicures. It's a health and safety issue.
Maybe she's cheap AND a germaphobe? Obviously?
It is very smart for her to bring her own set. Google why…
as a cosmetologist .. she is smart. there have been people that have died due to unsanitary implements and tools used in the nail salons. she should bring her own footbath too! one killed a woman in texas. don't call her cheap. call her smart and cautious.
You can get hepatitis from unsanitary nail equipment.
i have heard for years that it's best to bring your own manicure kit… reduces the chances of getting a staph infection.
my mom always makes sure i bring my own stuff, regardless of how nice the salon is just because it could get infected since other people are using the same things.. you can never be too sure of how well they clean it. i thought it was just common sense
ALOT of people do…this is normal…no story here. FAIL!
My salon sells a kit at a very inexpensive price and they keep it there for me. Why not?
Yes'mam, she's a smart smart woman, because that nail salon shiz is DISGUSTING. Paula Abdul got a nasty ass infection from nail salons, and wanted to do something with legislature and health codes for nail salons, so i definitely see nothing wrong with bringing your own nail supplies. would YOU use a surgical device that has clipped off another person's DEAD SKIN??? too many people come in and out of salons for them to be truly sanitary..
i read in a magazine that it's better if you take your own set.
so apparently she isn't insane.
this is what limeys do!
I manage a spa in Toronto, and can say in full confidence that it is not needed to take your own tools, as long as common sense is used, you should always ask your spa, how they clean their tools (autoclaves are a clear winner) and they should be cleaned after EVERY CLIENT - no excuse, the stations should also be cleaned, and built in bowls are rarely cleaned properly (because of the jets), nail, files should never be used on more then one client (the same goes for buffers) - we actually let you take your tools home with you at our spa to show you just how clean we are and that we never double use. A spa should be able to show you sealed sanitizing pouches (for metal tools) and a spore test of the equipment they use to sanitize without hesitating.
If a spa hesitates when you ask then just say no - spa should be proud of sanitizing not afraid.
Everyone does that. When I go to my regular spot they have my own stuff waiting for me. It's not weird at all and if you've ever gotten a fungus from a pedi you'd be carrying your own stuff too
Get the facts Perez. Its actually a lot more sanitary to use your own. It has nothing to do with cheapness. Some of "your own", the famous people, actually brought it to our attention. Some nail places are great, some are dirty.
Ive never felt compelled to comment on anything until now,
As a working certified nail technician I care very much about my clients health therefore I have to agree and disagree with mel b.
Anyone who visits cheap nail shops (or chop shops as we call them) are putting their health at risk. You can roll your eyes and believe im overeacting, however I speak from fact.
I agree with mel for bringing her own kit to a nail shop if she HAD to go to a cheap nail shop, but the thing is, she doesnt! She should do herself a favor and go to a reputable spa/nail bar where her health is a factor in a beautiful manicure service.
seriously mel, why are you cutting corners?!! u can afford a professional.
thats not her being cheap, it doesn't save u any money, its just much more sanitary, u could get your cuticles infected and bacteria, staph infections..god only knows what else…if they aren't properly santizing things..it just makes sense
I do the same thing
i dont know what kind of salons shes goin to, but mines reasonable in price… $15 for mani. and they let you have your own box of tools w/ ur name on it in the back.
This is common practice on long island. women either bring their own kits with them or they are held by the salon. When it comes to nail polish, there is little to no risk when using the salon's bottles because of the acetone in the polish (kills germs the same way rubbing alcohol does) but all other tools can carry unwanted nail fungus (GROSS!) or worse. There have even been some reported cases of women contracting hepatitis from nail salons.
Come on Perez, better safe than sorry!
a lot of people take their own set of things…its nothing to blog about perez…you're slacking
there's always a chance of getting cut and being infected with bacteria that even broad spectrum antibiotics can't fight so easily. fake nails aren't even safe either, they harbor a ton of germs that's why you don't see hospital personnel wearing them. i'm not leaving my health in the hands of some nail tech who couldn't give a damn.
I doubt she's a germaphobe, i watched a documentary she did years ago, and whilst changing her daughters diaper, she proceeded to wipe her face with the same part of the cloth she'd wiped her backside with………. Disgusting, or maybe she's only bothered about her own health???
You can get Hep C from salon tools, and since you can't be 100% sure they were cleaned properly, why not just bring your own?
I, along with all of my female friends, take a personal kit to nail salons. Staph infections is easily transmittable in a place like that. You're fucking disgusting for even suggesting that someone is odd for taking a kit. Do you use the same toothbrush as strangers? Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if you use the same butt plug.
you might calll her cheap but at least she wont get fungus growing under her nails from not bringing her own kit.
its about cleanliness, not cheapness
Makes sense to bring your own but she can afford the better salons. There are germs all over those places so I prefer to not go at all. But I understand her logic.
Even way before Paula Abdul's infection, it was actually recommended to always bring your own nail kit.
Talk to the people who got horrible fungus and bacterial infections from nasty nail salon equipment. Stop being so damn judgmental and use your head for once.
im a licensed cosmetologist and know the risk of someone using implements that have been used on other ppl and may have not been cleaned. there was actually someone here in texas that sued a nail salon owner because she got aids from getting a pedi….sounds scary to me and i would be paranoid too!
Re: TorontoSarah – well u may be doing that but most nail salons will lie to you, not trying to be racist but those asian salons will reuse the same things over and over cuz they dont want to get new implements for everyone. trust me, i knw
not weird at all.
I don't care what she does, I'd totally let her do me. She is SO HOT!!!
Bringing your own equipment is a smart move. It's so easy to get a fungus in the nails. I have had my own set before at places when I used to get them done regularly.
uhhhh…..yes, dumb ass. it has been the standard for a while now. try being current
damn she looks hot
a lot of nail spas now sell you ur own equipment that they keep in a little box with your name on it. and even expensive salons can be dirty and nasty. just like expensive restaurants.
I always believed they should grade nail salons with a, b, c or d like they do restaurants
PEREZ NO…..IT IS NOT WEIRD TO TAKE YOUR OWN STUFF!!!!! I am talking from 100% first hand knowledge. I had a fungus infection from dirty equiptment from a nail salon i had been going to for 5 years with the same tech. Two of my fingers were severly infected, the ENTIRE nail bed on both had to be removed by my doctor and it took a YEAR AND A HALF…for my nails to heal, fungus to grow out, and new nail beds to come in…so yea imagine how i felt….so HELL NO…ITS NOT BEING A GERMAPHOBE AT ALL. And just bc she wants to bring her own polish does not make her cheap at all. And what kills me i don't care if its a SPA or a regular salon (and honestly…um….whats a cheap salon to people?) verses paying expensive prices at spas either or u can have dirty habits with the techs in both just bc your paying higher price does not mean it will be cleaner. I hadn't worn fake nails from a salon in 3 years bc i am still troubled by what i went through. Those Kiss press on nails are very good and i tried them for a wedding last month and they looked just as good as when I had been going to a salon. After my friends saw what happened to me they all immediatedly went out and bought their own kits as well and I think its a good idea to cut down on infections.
ummm … i live on long island new york & i have my own manicure set. duh… thats not really a question for people in my town on account that everyone in my nail salon basically has one…. agrreeed w/ scarrry
Re: Danessa –
agreeed my nail place does that also & its super clean tooo !!
If you have them take them. It's not being a germaphob, it's being smart. Too many people get fungus from unsanitary conditions. But you're an idiot.
a LOT of people take their own mani/pedi set to the salon. that's not news. i was doing that about 10 years ago
I almost lost a finger to a staph infection after a fill. It took me a long time to go to another nail salon. You don't even want to know what can happen to your foot in those pedi tubs. The nail salon I was going to got offended if you asked them to use new equipment on you, the girl actually said,
"I not use new set on you, I not know if you come back". This one shop wanted to use the same drills bits, brushes, files, and nail brushes on everybody, (that's how I got a staph infection).
My advice to everyone, grow your own nails out and don't go to those places.
If you must go, use your own sterilized nail stuff, even take a mask and put it on, and don't take your kids in there either. The acrylic powder that is cast off when they are using the drill, is not good for your lungs, or your kids either.
One more thing, make sure the person doing your nails does not have any cuts on them.
Yeah, it's a good idea to take your own manicure tools. Best to cut down on risk of germs wherever possible. And never go for a manicure or pedicure if you have an open wound, no matter how tiny.
I don't yet but am now seriously considering the fact.
thats standard practice at my salon, we all have boxes that we keep there with our names on it.
where i'm from most salons offer a set of your own to buy and store at their salon… with all the different types of nail funguses you can pick up from fake nails i don't blame her taking her own set as i have my own
no, it's smart to have your own stuff. Much more sanitary. Some salons provide drawers where clients can keep their own stuff.
ive thought about it, but then again how many times have i got a mani/pedi and nothing has happened
I take my own. Years ago I got an infection in my thumb from a nail salon in Vegas.
EVERYONE can do that…they encorage you too…talk about making a big deal outta nothing…get a CLUE.
who cares if she brings her own stuff. WAY more sanitary. Because of the course i am in in school, i have learned about this, salons do not disinfect and clean their equipment properly, because the equipment that actually does the job properly is very expensive. she's very smart
Re: TorontoSarah – Your spa takes the right precautions, but the nail salons my friends go to, do NOT clean their metal tools in between clients. It's disgusting, they just care about pushing clients through to make the most money. The buffers are worn down and the nail files are covered in nail dust. It is truly gross. So, sometimes bringing your own tools is necessary.
It's actually a pretty common and actually recommended thing to do. It could be an expensive place and you could still get a fungus!
I think she's smart. Germs run rampant in those ghetto salons.
the salon i go to gives you you own file and buffer but its pretty clean compared to most salons plus they always stealize everything. i dont think theres anything wrong w/ bring you own gear though
mel is doing the right thing. it is best to have your own nail kit. coz you just never know. it is like in the doctor's office, i don't let them use the metal speculum or scrapers. i insist on the plastic ones and watch them open the new package (to make sure it hasn't been laying around in the open air). i mean, ewww, who wants to have that sort of stuff being passed around? same with the nails. there's no sterilizer 100% and hospitals have admitted this so if they have problems sterilizing their medical equipment how can you expect a small nail salon to be up to spot with sterilizing proctocols? so good on mel for doing what all of us should! also make sure the nail tech is wearing latex gloves (the same kind doctors and dentists use).
Yes, it is true they do say bring your own. Lots of germs going around and can cause an infection. Ewww..
i forgot to mention, you wouldn't let a needle be shared, no matter how well sterilized/cleaned it was claimed to be so why would you let clippers, files, pumice stones, cutile trimmers, etc. anywhere near your fingers and toes, especially if someone got nicked and bled? yuck, so yes, be proactive and take your own stuff!
This is so common, it's really recommended.
Yes I would, it's what we all should be doing. How can you trust a salon to be sanitary or not?
A few places actually GIVE you the set they used on you to take home, to keep things sanitary. They've got to have some of those type places in L.A. And it isn't extremely expensive…only a few bucks more.
It's actually more common than you think. Better safe than sorry. My friend toe got infected from an unsanitary salon and her nail keeps growing back and then falling off. Yikes!
i dont blame her my sis got gain green from a nail shop and it was considered "high end" its best to take ur own stuff , i know a lady who takes her own foot spa to get a pedi
Mmm, that's actually a smart idea. You could risk losing a limb from some of the bacteria that builds up on nail salon equipment that hasn't been properly sterilized.
wow. perez, or who ever is writing this shit:
seriously…do you go out of your house? have you been to a salon, cheap or expensive? especially on the east coast? didnt think so…my old salon in brooklyn MADE you bring in your own stuff or purchase your own there. they would put it in a sealed container, after it was cleaned, and keep it there for you.
do you chew on your own toe nails so you have never been in a salon? would you not want to make sure everything was clean?
and i suppose this will be taken down soon once you realize how stupid you are. just like when you made fun of cindy mccain using botox to get rid of her migranes and when all the posts made fun of you for being so stupid. that one was taken down real quickly.
seriously perez, you are really fucking stupid sometimes and its funny.
Bringing your own equipment to the nail salon is common, shit for brains.
no it isnt "to much." there are germs and horrible bacteria that if your skin is cut and it gets into ur body ur pretty much screwed. it can actually eat away at ur flesh.
I don't blame her, it's a good idea.
um yeah, a lot of people bring their own! a salon in my town even has special drawers with names on them so frequent customers can store their own materials in the salon without carrying them back and forth.
alot of people bring their own equipment its not unusual
Doesn't matter how expensive it is, medical experts agree the best way not to catch anything is to bring your own hardware…
Many many people take their own tools Perez. It's not uncommon. The problem is that you cannot be too careful. People have come to realize that not all nail salons take the greatest care in cleaning and sterilizing tools. It's just a very smart practice that I totally agree with. I do not know where those nail files have been!!! Ewwwwww
Very smart. Take a good, close look around even at the nicest nail salons around. You can always find something that will gross you out. Bring all your own stuff!
Is she really that broke, or just that cheap? Don't go to a chop shop, and you wont have to worry about sanitation! REAL salons ARE sanitary!
DON'T SHAVE YOUR LEGS BEFORE GOING TO GET A PEDI!! When you have shaved your lower legs and ankles, the shaft that the hair sits in has been compromised and also you may have nicked yourself and not know it at the time. Depending how far down your legs are in the water.
The city I live in is in the top five biggest cities in the U.S. and these shops are all over the place. With the downturn in the economy these places try and scrimp on whatever they can. They literally herd people in and out like cattle to make as much money as they can. Our health department does check these places but the health officials are really outnumbered compared to how many of these salons there are.
Re: squeal – LOOL you still use that word? :S
and btw, no, we dont do that, just her.
As the only white girl nail tech in an Asian "business", licensed in the state of California, I actually have little bags for each of my clients with nail files, buffers, cuticle pushers, nail brushes, etc. It's so easy to spread germs, and even tho I'm clean with MY stuff (State Board Rule) unlike chop shops out there, it's BEST to take your own stuff. So I don't blame her!
Re: Delilah11 – REAL salons ARE sanitary!
Not really! I've worked in many "real" salons as you say, and my fellow co-workers were just as nasty as chop shop workers. If you've ever seen Tabitha's Salon Makeover, even the cleaniest salons can still be dirty.
Mel B. is a genius! ALWAYS bring your own tools. And another hint…don't wax or shave 24 hours before having a pedicure. Women who do are more than 5x more likely to contract an infection. Daily Candy just featured a fabulous new company that sells ManiPedi sets to bring with you AND a pedicure bath solution that you put in the water to keep you safe. You can buy both online at www.SaniManiPedi.com.
theyre not just breeding grounds for bacteria and infections that can go away with antibiotics. we're talking hepatitis c and HIV. i dont go to any nail salon unless i bring my own supplies or i can buy them.
i take my manicure set when getting a pedicure…the idea that the brush may have brushed someone elses feet (etc) gives me the creeps!
she is super hot!
I've tried bringing my own scrubber before, and the salon told me I can't do that and its unsanitary? WTF?
