A defining voice in the Hollywood industry has died.

Army Archerd, who wrote for Variety for about half a century, passed away on Tuesday from a rare form of mesothelioma cancer, "thought to be the result of his exposure to asbestos in the Navy during WWII."

Army was the voice of the "Just for Variety" column, which ran what would be his last column on Sept. 1, 2005, as well writing a blog for Variety.com. His last blog posting was July 27.

Archerd was 87 years old.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to all his family and friends.

My dad has Mesothelioma from asbestos exposure during WWII also. He is 84 years old and struggles for every breath. Some people gave their lives instantly, some of them like my dad have given them painfully slow. RIP Army.

Re: alaskashell – I feel you, my grandmother just passed in july from mesothelioma, she was 73, diagnosed about a year prior, was getting chemo every 3 weeks for that entire year. more awareness needs to be made about this awful cancer, its not that rare perez!
